  • "A lovely little cottage, clean, modern and cosy (especially with the log fire burning)."

The spiral staircase could be a challenge for some. Friendly, no hassle owners . ideal base for visiting the lakes.

  • "Owners were lovely but this place is situated right next to a farm and the flies and smell were unbearable."

I had to leave early so only had half of the holiday. The communication with Sykes has been nothing short of horrendous. They completely ignore my complaint and despite sending pictures of all the dead flies I paid in full for a holiday that I didn’t have! Absolutely shocking.

  • "The hosts and cottage were great but there is a working farm behind the wall of the property which really affected our sleep (not owned by proprietor)."

There were cows in the shed which woke us daily at 5am and the farmer with his quad and barking dog came by everyday at 6am. The cow in the shed sounded like it was in our property it was that loud, it would make very loud noise most of the day.

It was so cosy and our dog loved the enclosed garden. Pat and David (the owners) were so welcoming too and their lab was absolutely gorgeous loved seeing how excited she got every time we got back!

  • "The place was lovely, especially the garden as this was lovely to sit in."

But we feel the tv should be downstairs where the sofa is as you don’t really want lie in bed all the time to watch it. Maybe look at a smart telly too as there isn’t much to do around the accommodation so when you get back in from doing a nice long walk it would be good to be able log on Netflix etc. Some new towels too as they were a little hard - but other than that we had a lovely stay & the owners were lovely people. Make sure you visit the George & dragon + visit Appleby if you fancy a few drinks.

Max our black lab loved the enclosed garden which had beautiful views towards the mountains.. Thankyou for such a wonderful stay.

  • "What a cosy, attractive, well equipped cottage!"

It really didn't matter that the weather was pretty awful. We were warm and comfy. With the wood burner and efficient electric heating you'd be fine here even in the depths of winter. The garden is lovely - I'd love to see it in the summer - and completely enclosed so would be perfect for guests with a dog. The two spiral staircases were a bit challenging, especially when carrying mugs of tea, and would make it unsuitable for anyone with mobility issues. The kitchen was very well equipped and the hosts friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended.

Great place to relax in but well placed to get out and explore with our dog. Lovely little touch of chocolates and wine on arrival. The decor is really nice; well kept and clean. Overall we had a great time and won't hesitate to recommend to family & friends.

It's in an area of Cumbria not so often visited but beautiful none the less. The property was well equipped, clean and comfortable. The owners were helpful and friendly and gave us some tips re what not to miss in the area. We did a lot of walking on quiet fells with widespread views in all directions. Ideal for a week away from Covid!

I would not be able to recommend this cottage more to people! We had a beautiful stay we couldn’t of felt more welcome. We made friends with the neibours and visited the most beautiful locations. There was everything and more you could of asked for in the cottage and was so romantic and beautiful. I have nothing bad at all to say. Anyone looking into stopping here should 100% do that you will not regret it. The cottage is attached to the main house but we couldn’t of felt more welcomed by the owners When we arrived and left to enjoy our perfect weekend they both deserve all the credit because they have gone above and beyond with this stunning cottage.

  • "The holiday exceeded our expectations."

Pat and David were lovely and helpful but unobtrusive. It was dark when we arrived so David kindly offered us a torch to borrow. The cottage has an enclosed garden which was very important for my terrier. The only thing he didn't like was the spiral staircase but that was not an issue as he was right at home in front of the log burner. The kitchen was stocked with good quality appliances, crockery and pots and pans even down to a 'bun' tray for making Yorkshire puds or cupcakes. There was also a radio and sewing kit - things I wouldn't expect to see as standard. The cottage has electric heaters and there was plenty of fuel for the log burner so it made the cottage nice and cosy. Throughout my college years I worked for a farmer who had holiday cottages so I know what to look for. This cottage was spotless - no sign of cobwebs or dust to be found. Care has obviously been taken in setting this cottage up and maintaining it. The red accents throughout are lovely. The addition of tea, coffee, milk, salt and pepper, a bottle of white wine and a box of chocolates were also extras that were unexpected. I was also impressed with Sykes Cottages. I had a £100 voucher for another holiday cottage booking site. Even with this discount Skye's Cottages worked out cheaper. They also didn't charge extra for the dog or for the electric heaters or fuel for the log burner. Plus, when I had questions about several cottages I was interested in (specifically the gardens and how secure they were for my dog) Molly was exceptionally quick in finding out the answers - she rang the owners to check and messaged me straight back. This was around 7pm on a Saturday night too - not during 'normal' office hours. When I had similar queries for the other holiday cottage company they never replied. The local area is lovely. The cottage is in a small village/hamlet and very quiet. It is about 3 miles from Shap village which has a Co-op shop, post office and an award winning fish and chip shop. The bright lights of Penrith are approximately 11 miles away (there's a pub just before you reach Penrith called The Beehive and it serves good quality cheap meals and is dog friendly). It is worth travelling further afield and visiting Ullswater. The Aira Force waterfalls are lovely and the Inn on the Lake at Glenridding serves lovely food and afternoon teas. It is dog friendly in The Orangery or the Ramblers Bar. They are both lovely, bright and airy.

  • "Had a lovely week in the Eden Valley."

Cottage extremely nice, hosts David and Pat friendly, welcoming and very helpful. Well located for for great walks around the N Eastern Lakes and the Pennines near Appleby. Nearest pub excellent, for beer and meals, the Butchers Arms in Crosby Ravensworth. Were disappointed that the 'Withnail pub' in Bampton Grange was closed the day we were in that area! (The Crown and Mitre). Shap not a place to spend too much time in, but the Shap Chippy is really good. And it's got a good co-op shop. The Haweswater Hotel is worth a visit for its authentic 30s art deco ambience. Good for a light lunch and quite likely for evening meals too. we were pleased to do a few more miles on the Coast to Coast, and to sample a bit of the Pennine Way. All that, and great weather!

welcoming and fabulous hosts too. we would love to stay again but most likely without our dog. she Houdini and escaped from the garden also she hated the spiral staircase which meant we had to carry her up and down all the time. however the location and beautiful cottage completely over shadowed this! 30-40 minutes from all the major locations in the lakes and just beautiful locally. Sharp which is a village close by is lovely for food and drink.

  • "The pictures and description really don't do this little cottage justice."

The views are absolutely stunning and it was so easy to get to lots of great places in the lakes from the village. Having an enclosed garden was a life saver with our energetic puppy. David and Pat (and Maisie the lab) were so welcoming and friendly and arriving to find fresh milk in the fridge, delicious chocolates and wine and coffee and tea so we could have a cuppa before getting unpacked was really great. The only thing that would slightly have improved the experience for us would have been to have the TV downstairs, rather than on the wall opposite the bed upstairs, so we could watch something in the evening while keeping the dog company. This was really just a minor niggle though in an otherwise perfect property.

I found them! Pat was also generous in lending me a spare pair of waterproof trousers when I discovered I had lost mine en route somewhere! Ruby the horse gave me a lovely greeting every morning and Daisy the lab literally jumped for joy every time she saw myself and my dog, it was quiet peaceful and just what I needed all the locals were very friendly too giving me fresh laid eggs and suggesting walks. Lots of walking right from the door or within a short drive and great recommendations from David for fish and chips, hot chocolate in Orton and Haweswater Hotel! I would definitely go again

About the location

Appleby-in-Westmorland 6 miles; Penrith 13 miles.

The attractive, unspoilt rural village of Maulds Meaburn in the Lyvennet Valley is ideally placed for exploring the Lake District, Eden Valley and the Yorkshire Dales. Hunter Davies described the village as "one of the most beautiful villages in the country". It is a quiet picturesque village in Cumbria not far from the Eden Valley and about six miles from Appleby-in-Westmorland. It forms part of the parish of Crosby Ravensworth and stands either side of Lyvennet Beck which flows from the south through Crosby Ravensworth and finally enters the River Eden near Temple Sowerby. Nearby Appleby sits at the heart of the lush Eden Valley, and is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain; still today, many of the old steam trains wend their way along this line and over the awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct. Visit Appleby in June and experience the famous Horse Fair, the largest Romany gathering in Europe, enjoy a walk on the Pennine Way at Dufton, or explore one of the local cycle trails. With the delightful Pooley Bridge, Penrith and the magnificent Lake District within easy reach, this is an ideal holiday location.
