“The house was absolutely beautiful!”
! Wonderful facilities. The hot tub was a favourite with lots of us! All the rooms were lovely and comfortable. Especially Ribchester with the 2 balconies. We are already looking at returning next year!
! Wonderful facilities. The hot tub was a favourite with lots of us! All the rooms were lovely and comfortable. Especially Ribchester with the 2 balconies. We are already looking at returning next year!- Dr Clegg, March 2020
“We hired the place out for a 30th Birthday it was a great weekend.”
The pace was outstanding very clean and in a lovely location. The hot tub was an extra bonus, all of the rooms were a great size.- Miss Cooper, February 2020
“Beautiful home for the weekend with some stunning features.”
The only downside was that the hot tub wasn’t ready for the first day, which I know can be difficult with turn around times, but with such wIt’s short stay (Friday to Sunday) it was only able to be used once.- Mr Perry, December 2019
“Somerwood is an amazing house set in beautiful grounds.”
The kitchen is large and is a very social space. The only negative about the kitchen is it could do with a few more utensils but that is a very minor issue. All the bedrooms are lovely and the master bedroom is fantastic. The only complaint we had is the hot tub is not hot enough. It is set at 37 and obviously cools quickly in this weather. We did ask for it to be turned up to 40 and was told this would be done but unfortunately it didn't happen. We have been going away as a group to different cottages for 13 years and have never encountered this problem with a hot tub before. The sauna was a very welcome bonus and we all really enjoyed using it. Ribchester is a lovely village and we enjoyed a walk around and a visit to the museum. We all loved our stay and one of our group is going to book Somerwood with her husband and a few of their friends.- Mrs Williams, November 2019
“Unfortunately we found the Somerwood experience a bit of let down; there was the annoying stuff like no plugs in sinks, no tin opener in the kitchen, the DVD player didn’t work, the sound system in the cinema (disappointingly just 2 small low grade computer speakers!”
) were damaged, and the WIFI didn’t work anywhere in the property! Then there was the unpleasant stuff; dried poo on the toilet pans in the Whalley and Waddington en-suites – also there was a foul smell in the latter coming from the shower trap, the hair on bathroom floors in the Chaigley & Cliteroe rooms, the dirty floor in the downstairs toilet – all especially annoying as there is such a large housekeeping bond to pay upfront! Then there was the unnecessary stuff, the threadbare and uncomfortable mattress (the one on the right) in the Waddington and the leaky shower and toilet in the Ribchester en-suite and the leaking toilet in the 1st floor bathroom which also didn’t flush properly. All of this was reported to Ribble Valley Holiday Homes very shortly after our arrival and the plugs, tin opener and DVD player issues were rectified immediately and while our feedback was appreciated, there was reluctance to get involved to resolve the issues, rather to ‘just let Sykes know’. Definitely, a good clean and some remedial work needed to bring this property back up to standard.- Mrs Druce, October 2019
Thank you for your feedback. We pride ourselves in giving all our guests the best holiday experience that we can. We do have an excellent cleaning team who not only clean the property, but go back and do a revisit to check everything is ok. We did respond to your comments during your stay and visited the property on Saturday to assist with the non-urgent requests. The WIFI does work in the property, although we do state in our welcome information it may not be as fast as you are used to as we are in the countryside. Any other comments you have made in the feedback could have been easily rectified during your stay had we been given the chance to deal with this. Sykes owner relations
“Had a fantastic weekend, beautiful home.”
would definitely book to stay again- Miss O'connor, October 2019
“We had an amazing weekend of fun.”
The house is fantastic, décor lovely, the beds are so comfortable and it did not matter that the weather was bad as there is so much to offer within the house, with the snooker, table tennis, cinema room, hot tub and I could go on. Will definitely be returning- Mr Fazakerley, September 2019
“We enjoyed a great weekend at Somerwood- three generations celebrating a 90th birthday.”
A beautiful house with brilliant facilities. The youngers ones in particular loved using the hot tub, sauna, snooker table and table tennis room. A very minor suggestion - a larger teapot please!- Mrs James, September 2019
“This is a very good cottage.”
Each year my wife and I, our three daughters and their husbands and 5 grandchildren spend a week together. We need a big place and this is ideally suited for our annual event. The recrearional facilities ( in particular the hot tub and cinema) were enjoyed by all particularly the grand children. There are one or two things that could easily be put right e.g there is no mirror in the ground floor bedrooms bathroom and no razor point but this is nit picking. I would be happy to recommend this property to my family and friends.- Mr Evans, August 2019
“Somerwood is a beautiful house in a lovely, quiet location.”
Great facilities and lots of space for the 10 children who joined us to run around. They made full use of the tenn8s court, hot tub and large lawned area for football games. Everyone loved the cinema room. The only issue we had was poor wifi in some bedrooms but we wanted to encourage the kids to play instead of spending the week on their devices anyway so it wasn't much of an issue. I would absolutely recommend this house.- Mrs Siewruk-barnes L, August 2019
“Somerwood is a beautiful property and the pictures do not do it justice.”
It is finished to a very high standard and felt very luxurious. 13 of us spent a long weekend there for my husband’s 40th and we were not disappointed. Thanks for a great stay.- Mrs Walsh, July 2019
“Couldn't have asked for a better place to stay, we booked this for a hen party and the place exceeded my expectations.”
The facilities, the location, the rooms, cleanliness were all amazing. The contact too and from between the property was excellent, got back to me promptly with all my questions! Such a beautiful location, and the house itself was also beautiful! Excellent value for money. Would definitely recommend this place and one day hope to be back!- Miss Carrington, March 2019
“We stayed at somerwood for my hen weekend, and I couldn’t have asked for a better weekend!”
the house was just beyond what I could have asked for and the surrounding area was beautiful. Every single person in my group have said that they would use the house again, from start to finish the booking process was really great and straight forward. And the people at Ribble Valley holiday homes were also great when i needed further information they were very quick to reapond. Would 10000% reccomend somerwood house is to anyone and would defo use Sykes again to book the next weekend.- Miss Gibson, February 2019
“16 Friends spent 3 Nights in Ribchester Celebrating my Husbands 60th Birthday We had organised lots of things to do with plenty of relaxing times There was plenty of space to have time alone should you want this We saw lots of wild life with many visits from a Snowy Owl and a Bird of Prey and a small herd of Deer Great use of the hot tub and sauna after our long walks in the surrounding area The Rooms are all large and well equipped.”
The Downstairs Game Room was used a lot as was the Cinema to watch the Football and Rugby Matches (Could do with a few extra bean bags for relaxing) We all came away saying it was great property- Mrs Simpson, February 2019
“The house was great for our celebration catering for the needs of a twelve month old, a four year old, a ten year old, four teenagers and six adults with ages from thirty seven to seventy two.”- Mrs Briscoe, January 2019
“We had an amazing time at Somerwood.”
The accommodation was fabulous, very spacious and the downstairs games rooms were enjoyed by all. Beautifully, furnished bedrooms and bathrooms and very spacious. We were delighted with our booking and my dad whose 70th were were celebrating was made extremely special. Thank you - we definitely would look to book something similar again.- Mrs Whitehead, November 2018
“Part of the gas cooker didn't work, but you told us you were awaiting a new part.”
The Ribchester Arms is great (apart from my overdone lamb shank). It was a shame that we came home yesterday only to read in today's Guardian what a splendid gastropub is the Assheton Arms in Downham. But we did enjoy lunch in the Spread Eagle in Sawley. And we enjoyed Brockholes, the reedbed water park. Apart from all that we Londorners discover the beauty of the Ribble valley- Mr Howes, October 2018
“Beautiful house, great facilities and excellent location which was very peaceful but within easy reach of places of interest.”
There were a few problem with items not working in the house, but once I reported the problems they were quickly fixed for us. It was great that bedrooms had blackout blinds, especially for the children.- Mrs Ferns, September 2018
“Just returned from a long weekend here and have to say it was awesome.”
Plenty of space to accommodate our party of 13 adults and lots to keep us occupied. Hot tub and sauna were well used along with the snooker table and ping pong in the basement. As the weather was good we even got in some games of tennis on the court and loved the cinema room for cosy evenings in. Huge kitchen- with great table that we could all sit around & which added to the celebration. Plenty to do further afield - we went on a canal trip near Blackburn. But a walk down the hill into the village took us to nice pubs, the Roman museum and bathhouse and the Stydd Gardens for some wine tasting. A few little niggles in that the dishwasher didn’t work along with only half the toaster but nothing major and certainly didn’t spoil our weekend. We’re already looking to book again next year!- Mr Knight, September 2018
“We had an amazing time in this beautiful house - it accommodated all my family, and as it was my daughter's wedding weekend it made it even more special.”
Great facilities, the cinema, pool table and table tennis went down a treat. The kitchen was a brilliant meeting area - absolutely beautiful. However, there were a couple of things which stood out in such a lovely house. 1. Badly ripped chair in the lounge 2. Mirror propped up against the wall in the lounge. This is not safe if there are children staying in the house 3. Pagoda near the pond - a beautiful place to sit but we couldn't as it looked like it hadn't been cleaned for a very long time 4. Curtains hanging off the rails in some of the rooms 5. The patio/bbq area - we had to clean and cut back the grasses on the seats to enable people to gather down there. 6. The hot tub was clean but it was clear that it hadn't been completely emptied and cleaned for a while, as there was grit on the bottom of the seats. I have a hot tub and although it is a pain to do a complete clean on them it is something which should be done on a regularly basis. This is not a complaint. I just want to highlight things a customer would see when paying a high price for a beautiful located house. We are already planning our next visit. Thanks again Lynn Grimes- Mrs Grimes, May 2018
“Booked this house for 70th birthday celebration with mixed age family.”
72 down to 2 years. Great place with room for all to enjoy without being under each other’s feet.. Plenty to keep all amused for the whole weekend without having to travel miles away from the house. Maybe one plus would be a toilet and shower down with the sauna and hot tub otherwise perfect!!- Mrs Hall, April 2018
“The facilities were very good.”
. there were one or two small niggles a plate rack by the sink would have been very useful but despite the arctic conditions outside the house was very warm and welcoming throughout.the snooker cinema and table tennis rooms were put to good use as were the hot tub and sauna.- Mr Mooring, March 2018
“The house was amazing for a large group - plenty of space!”
Loved all of the facilities such as the games room and hot tub and it meant we didn't have much need to go anywhere! Lovely walks straight on the doorstep too. The hosts were very helpful and sorted a couple of minor issues immediately! Would love to stay again in the future.- Mrs Spreadborough, January 2018
“Negatives-the ground floor bedroom was very cold, hot water was not always available in the showers, and the property could really do with another dishwasher for the size of the house, however that by no way takes away from how fantastic this house is.”
It’s spaciuos for 16, large bedrooms and living accommodation with excellent facilities, including the outdoor space and basement games room. We had the most amazing weekend and would definitely come again.- Mr Lunn, December 2017
“Lovely large house in quiet peaceful surroundings great party house , set in a a pretty area of Lamcashire”- Mrs Dobison, October 2017
“Amazing holiday had by all-brilliant house in a great location; so many facilities that we never really left the cottage!”
Would definitely recommend Somerwood, and will hopefully go back again soon!- Mrs Wilkinson, April 2017
“This was a brilliant house and all my guests enjoyed the facilities.”
Value for money was great and I would recommend this again.- Miss Copping, October 2016
“Great venue and fantastic facilities.”- Mr Foster, September 2016
“Great property, all the facilities were brilliant - the tennis court was used every day as was the hot tub.”
Rooms were good sized and ensuites/bathrooms again all just what you needed. There were 8 of us and the house was perfect - not tripping over each other - plenty of room. Coming home my rooms feel so small!!!! We had an amazing week and would re consider booking again - great location - we did the lakes one day then Blackpool another - close to the motorway so just pick a road and go. The village itself was lovely lots of pubs and cafes - everything you needed.- Mrs Skeels, August 2016
“Couple of minor points worth mentioning.”
The listing stated the cinema room was equipped for blu-ray but it wasn't, hence we couldn't watch any of the films we had taken. Also surprised that there were no additional black bin bags provided and only two tea-towels - not ideal for a house accommodating 16! We are used to booking holiday cottages in Cornwall through another company and there is always a minimum of 1 pt milk and a couple of tea bags provided on arrival. Discovering there were none, we had to make a quick dash down to the village to get some before our online shopping arrived a couple of hours later. On the plus side, the property manager was brilliant when we asked her to clean the hot tub mid week - she arrived within two hours. Also, the robes in every bedroom were very appreciated, particularly for trips to the hot tub and sauna. And the kids (both big and little!) absolutely loved the games area in the basement!- Mrs Chapman, August 2016
“Absolutely fantastic property which is perfect for a long weekend to get away with friends.”- Mrs Jones, May 2016
“We were at Somerwood to celebrate our daughters 30th birthday; the hot tub, snooker table and cinema room were a great success.”- Mrs Veney, May 2016
“The house is absolutely beautiful, recently built to a very high standard.”
The majority of the bedrooms are en suite and there is a first rate basement with table tennis, snooker and cinema.- Ms Dunlop, April 2016
“A fantastic property.”
The whole family loved spending time in the house, especially the hot tub and sauna. The kids loved the cinema room and table tennis, whilst the snooker table went down a treat with the adults. We enjoyed a BBQ on the first day in the lovely BBQ area with plenty of seating and nice lighting.- Ms Frau, March 2016

About the location
Blackburn 7 miles; Clitheroe 9 miles; Preston 11 miles.
The village of Ribchester is encircled by green hills and lies in a curve of the River Ribble mid way between Preston and Clitheroe. It is a pleasant jumble of multi-coloured stone cottages in long twisting terraces. It has three pubs, the White Bull, dated 1707, the Black Bull and the Ribchester Arms and the award-winning Chinese restaurant Yu and You Restaurant and Bar. The White Bull has a porch canopy supported by four columns said to be from Roman ruins. The village takes its name from the River Ribble and the fort of Bremetennacum (the walled town by the Ribble). For this reason, Ribchester has been seen to have a purely Roman foundation, but excavations in 1977 showed that settlements going back to the middle Bronze Age existed in the area. An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Ribble Valley is a rural haven of spectacular scenery, diverse natural habitats and historical legend, a place of almost incomparable peace, where adults and children alike can enjoy the simple pleasures of the outdoors without the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Longridge is easily reached, a unique town with plenty of interesting shops and tempting eateries, described as 'big on character' by the Sunday Times and ranked in their '101 Best Places To Live In Britain'. Nearby Clitheroe is famed for its specialist shops of all types, including, amongst others, a sausage shop that sells over seventy-five different varieties! A gourmet's paradise, with award-winning restaurants and country hotels situated throughout the valley, and annual events including a number of agricultural shows and day festivals of all types, this fantastic location has plenty to offer at any time of year!
Note - If you wish to use the hot tub during your stay, please notify the owner at least 14 days prior to arrival.
