  • "Love your beautiful holiday home, we have been a few times and cannot wait to go back!"

Just a suggestion maybe a reading chair/nursing chair for the top bedroom, easier to feed and /or place to read.

  • "Driftwood was a lovely, welcoming cottage which we enjoyed staying in."

It would be even more enjoyable however, if the was a freezer and perhaps new pans and trays which are all very well used. A lot of thought has gone into decorating and furnishing the property, shame to be spoilt for fairly minor details, but they do make a difference to the experience .

  • "Great property, bathroom on every floor a bonus as there was 6 off us,fantastic views from out the back garden,we just felt very comfortable, if I was knit picking there is 2 fridges but were the 2nd fridge is it could have a bigger fridge freezer because no shops in walking distance ,and for 6 people the freezer just isn't big enough but there is a fantastic cafe 200 yds away and they also do great food at the boat house 5 mins away."

The only complaint that we have was that we wanted to mop the kitchen but could not find a proper mop or bucket there was only a sqeezey mop which was falling apart.

  • "I did leave a note at the property."

Not sure the owner got it though. The property was lovely but not very clean, we did pull out the settees so hopefully the cleaner did sort it out. the bunk beds were very poor mattresses, even for a child. Having said all of that I would recommend and not mention the above, in the hope that the property is properly cleaned.

So quiet. Spent a lot of time at the seating area in garden, just watching the sea, wildlife and the boats. Beautiful property and everything you would need was provided. Would definitely stay again.

On a very minor point - no where to recycle bottles. Landlord at the boat club obliged us!

  • "We had an amazing time at your beautiful holiday home and cannot wait to go back in August!"

! It was so peaceful, relaxing, breathtaking places I've been, don't think the pictures do it justice!! Really like the new addition to the garden seating area and fire pit, hopefully we will be able to use it in the summer time! We were their when the 2 storms hit but it didn't make any difference to us, it was safe, warm and still relaxing!! So glad we found this little island paradise! The Ford Cookson family

  • "Stunning property in an unspoilt area."

Great location for boat and weather watching. The log burner was definitely needed when the wind picked up. Only thing which would improve the house would be underfloor heating in the lounge and better glazing on the patio doors. Otherwise I would happily move in. Look forward to returning one summer.

  • "It’s a great house and we enjoyed our stay however the Lock on front door needs changing."

Very difficult to open and one of the party got locked out whilst going to bin. Luckily someone was in house to let them back in. Out of 4 people staying in the house only one person could navigate the lock. No fire wood on arrival and house very cold on arrival. Phoned agents looking after property who said don’t provide wood. Sykes contacted owner who said it’s not provided and that the listing is wrong. I’ve never stayed in a property yet where some wood is not provided when a log burner is advertised in the property. Had to locate where we could buy wood and drove to get some. Not such a relaxing start to holiday. Radiator in lounge needs bleeding. Lots of crockery and a lot chipped but no egg cups. Had to improvise and use egg box that the eggs came in to hold the boiled eggs. Pepper pot but no salt pot. Radiator in upstairs bathroom too close to toilet so burned your legs when using toilet. Had to cover it with a towel. Concur with previous reviews could do with a bigger fridge and freezer. Would have struggled if we had a longer stay to store fridge food . Not owners fault but next door looks like a builders yard and should be brought to the attention of anyone staying there.

  • "A lovely clean, spacious cottage."

A loo on every floor and a long garden with lovely views across the water. A fridge freezer would be a welcome addition or a larger fridge, we did struggle to fit everything in. A few of the bowls were chipped, but as there was plenty of crockery, it wasn't an issue. My main disappointment was that we were given no warning that the adjoining property is undergoing extensive renovation work. We were lucky to have sunshine, but it was difficult to relax in garden, whilst listening to hammering, sawing and drilling. I emailed Sykes while we were there to ask whether they were aware of this, I received no reply. I emailed again when home and again have received no reply. Up until now I have been happy with Sykes, however now I am unsure.

  • "The house is a lovely, peaceful base in which to explore the Southern Lake District area."

It is beautifully decorated with a nautical theme befitting for its location. Getting supplies from the supermarkets in nearby Barrow was easy. We enjoyed a wonderful week there and we would recommend it for anyone seeking a peaceful break. Our only minor complaint is that the DVD player does not work because someone has pressed the eject button too hard and it has disappeared inside the machine. Please inform the owner about this.

  • "Great home very relaxing had a fantastic week."

Due to fantastic weather spent most of our time at bottom of garden watching the world going by. Only draw back no freezer and fridge is too small for a holiday home for six people, plenty of space for a tall fridge/freezer Thanks for a great holiday

  • "Keys both front and back difficult."

Quite a struggle to open on a couple of occasions. Key safe difficult - instruction for use issued with code would be helpful No oven gloves! One dining chair seat loose - needs two screws. Oil or similar had been spilt in the yard - difficult to avoid bringing it into the house on soles. These only minor problems - we enjoyed our stay very much, especially its location with so many grandchildren attractions close to hand.

  • "I would recommend Driftwood - its a great location, right on the coast and close to the Lakes, so there is plenty to do."

The house has been tastefully renovated and decorated. One word of advice - the fridge is very small with no freezer compartment, nor a separate deep-freeze so don't, as we did, have all of your food for the week delivered upfront! But otherwise a wonderful holiday home.

About the location

ROA ISLAND

Ulverston 6 miles; Barrow-in-Furness 6 miles.

Roa Island is located on the Lake District's magnificent coastline, over half a mile south of the village of Rampside on the southernmost point of the Furness Peninsula. With an area of about 30 acres the island is the sixteenth most populated Island in Great Britain with just over one hundred inhabitants. Until 1847 Roa Island was a true island, being accessible only by boat or on foot across the sands at low tide. John Abel Smith, a London banker, bought Roa in 1840. He built a causeway to the mainland, completed in 1846, and an 810 foot (247 m) deep-water pier known as Piel Pier where steamers sailed to Fleetwood. The pier connected with the Furness Railway line to Kirkby via Furness Abbey, making use of the causeway. Other interesting buildings include Trinity Terrace, a row of terraced houses built to provide accommodation for the ten Trinity House pilots; and The Watch Tower, a Customs and Excise House built in 1847. Roa Island is home to a lifeboat station of the RNLI, serving Morecambe Bay and the Irish Sea. Just a short boat trip across the inlet is Piel Island, a small fifty acre island with its own castle, made famous by Martin Clune's (of men behaving badly and Doc Martin) The Island programme. Gifted to the people of Barrow-in-Furness by the Duke of Buccleuch in the early 20th century, the island is kept in order by the selection of the "King" of Piel, who is the landlord of the island's public house, the Ship Inn. Located in an outstanding area the village is close to the spectacular Furness Abbey, and the ancient market town of Ulverston is just 5 miles away, and still has an authentic feel and community spirit. The town boasts a street market every Thursday and Saturday and many festivals throughout the year, including an amazing lantern procession in November and a superb Dickensian weekend in early December. It is also the birthplace of Stan Laurel and home to the only Laurel and Hardy museum in the world! With all the attractions of the Lake District National Park and the sandy beaches and good birdwatching of the Furness coast close by, this quiet and peaceful area has plenty to offer.
