    “Full of damp and mould”

I rented this house through the Sykes Cottages company. The house is in a beautiful area of the Lake District, although it is about an hours drive from Lake Windermere. I rented this house through the Sykes Cottages company. The house is in a beautiful area of the Lake District, although it is about an hours drive from Lake Windermere. It's not far (about 10 mins) from Wastwater, which was lovely. However, the house on arrival smelt of damp and the bathroom wall into the corridor was covered with damp - and clearly the shower was leaking into the wall and had been for a while. The house was so damp that the bedding felt damp when you got into bed and your clothes felt damp when you put them on. The floors in the corners of some of the room were covered in condensation and many walls had the start of mould on them. we decided that there wasn't much point in telling the owner's father (our contact as the owner was away) about the issues since he must be aware of the shower mould/ damp issue and probably aware of the other issues too. We were on holiday and didn't particularly see the point as there was nothing that could be done whilst we were there to improve the situation. We decided that we would let them know about the issues after our stay so they could be rectified - the washing machine drained into the same place as the guttering and was overflowing so I let them know that too. I left a message for the owner telling him the day after I got home. He didn't phone me back or acknowledge the call. In my review on the Sykes website I decided not to mention the issues as I didn't want to damage the owner's business and limit his chances of getting future business, which I thought was a decent thing to do. I complained to Sykes and sent them the photos I had, since I hadn't heard from the owner and do think we should have some recompense. I had a 7 week old baby and a three year old who started wheezing in the house (he has previously wheezed in damp places but doesn't wheeze at home) plus some older family members so it was quite worrying being in a house which could be making them sick and it was just unpleasant to have the duvets and clothes damp all the time. I was told that the owner acknowledged the issues (he couldn't really deny them due to the pictures) and will rectify them but refused to give us any refund. Sykes say that they are simply agents and therefore it's up to the owner to provide a refund (as per their t&cs). I think this is appalling sine I paid Sykes for the property so they bear some responsibility for it in my opinion. One of the excuses given was that we didn't complain whilst in the property - this is ridiculous - I can understand it if you're complaining about a broken oven or lack of hot water or something but if you're complaining about something they can't rectify whilst you're there then there's no reason why you should have to report it whilst you're there. Especially if there's photographic evidence. I wish I'd not done the decent thing in my review on the Sykes' website since the owner was not prepared to do the decent thing. Hence my review here - be aware that this property may be still mouldy and damp. Plus if you have a problem with a holiday property report it whilst you are there or you give them ammunition to refuse to do the right thing! I can't seem to attach photos to this review or I would attach my pictures.
