  • "Had an excellent stay in the cottage it was the perfect base for us whilst visiting family and friends in the area, very comfortable and well equipped with a good level of cleanliness."

    Plenty of lovely dog walking areas close by and just a short drive to the well know beauty spots. Very happy to recommend. One word of warning if you have dogs the outside space of the cottage is open to the main road through the village and we noticed no one takes any notice of the 20 mile an hour speed limit!

  • "The house was nice."

    The statement about the heating will need adjusting on the house description as the wood burner only heats the bathroom radiator, and this didn’t work. I would recommend the cottage to others. We had a lovely week away.

  • "It’s my go to place to stay near the Lake District and my third visit to the cottage."

    Scales is a lovely quiet village with Ulverston on your doorstep to stock up on food shopping where I can use Aldi or M&S Food. It’s a great base location for travelling into the Lake District or up the Cumbrian coast line. The cottage has all the amenities I need with my little dog and parents and we are very comfortable. I will return again next year.

  • "Disruptive and noisy building works taking place 4 of the 7 days, we were not warned nor offered a discount."

    When I sent detailed videos of the noise and disruption I was not offered compensation. Extremely poor and I will not use Sykes again for any break, despite positive past experiences.

    There was no back garden and front garden had no gate before the road. Thus making it not pet or child friendly. WiFi stopped working at 9 every evening. We had took firestick to watch on an evening when children in bed but not possible due to lack of WiFi. Kitchen could use a cheese grater.

  • "Absolutely beautiful cottage."

    Great location, very clean and well presented. Very comfortable and cosy cottage with the added bonus of a log burner. Well equipped place. Only one slight niggle is the garden could do with some gates, as the drive way is open to a busy main road caution were needed when out with the dogs. We shall definitely stay here again and highly recommend to others.

  • "Return visitor to Beech Cottage."

    Scales is a lovely village close to the Cumbrian coast and with easy access to the Lakes. You have all the amenities of Ulverston and Barrow-in-Furness nearby, as long as you have a car which we did.. Beech cottage has all you need in a home away from home. It’s comfortable and suited us as 3 adults with one small dog. I will return again as I think it’s a great value staycation in a lovely location.

  • "The cottage is a really cosy and homely, there is a porch which is really handy for shoes and boots."

    The kitchen is fully equipped and has a full size fridge and freezer and was very clean. The open plan sitting room is spacious and has a dining area. There also is a cloakroom and clean bathroom downstairs. The beds were super comfortable and plenty of space to put clothes. Lovely views. It's the perfect place to explore the lake district or to visit the coastline as the beach is 10 minutes drive away from the cottage. I would definitely recommend this cottage and would like to return.

  • "The location of Beech Cottage was perfect for us, close to the beach and the common for walking the dogs."

    On first impressions the cottage looked quaint and cosy inside with there being plenty of room for 3 adults and 2 dogs, the addition of the porch was ideal for wet days. The cottage seemed well equipped but I would recommend that a bigger pan set and a few more oven trays should be supplied. Also the oven could do with a good clean. My other niggle is with the garden, its a large border running between the drive and the path, not somewhere that you can let a dog safely out into or where you can sit. The patio was on the drive but because we had 2 tightly parked cars we couldnt use it. Overall a lovely warm cottage.

  • "Please kindly note that it was very disappointing to find that even basic cleaning had not been carried out to a satisfactory standard within the above property."

    The following items/areas were not found to be in order: Shower/Toilet/Main Living area floor/Dirty oven dishes in the cupboard, (that had either been left dirty by the previous persons, and had not been picked by the Owner). There was no heating provided to dry Towls within the Bathroom, (there was a piped heated towel rail, but this was linked to the central heating system, which was off). One side of the matress within the mainbedroom was very uncomfortable with a spring. There were no 'Oven gloves' provided, (this is a basic item and a new pair should have been provided). It was not satisfactory at all trying to use 'Tea-towels', and there was not even a potato peeler provided! (this is all basic stuff). The front garden is not, 'Dog friendly' as it is open with no gates off the main parking area and the road is very busy with 'Farm traffic'. It should also be noted that there was 'no' local holiday information booklet provided' for the above property. The above list overall is very disappointing too have to feedback, and not up to the required standard that i would normally expect from 'Skyes Cottages' who i have used for a number of years, and usually twice a year. During the current climate i would not have expected to have found any, 'Cleaning issues'? and it gives me little confidence, that the 'Self-Catering' Industry are correctly managing these factors? I would not recomend the above property, untill all of the above items are addressed accordingly.

  • "Arrived late after a 10 hour journey and disappointed to find there was no welcome pack apart from dog biscuits ( we don't have a dog!"

    !). Fortunately we had our own milk and tea with us. The cottage was easy to warm up quickly using the electric heaters. Two small saucepans and an omelette pan does limit the cooking, but we managed. The location was quiet and we had a relaxing holiday.

  • "Very nice with good equipment for a small cottage, washer, tumbler, good-size freezer, although take your own pans if you like to cook as those supplied were tiny!"

    We found the cottage very nice for three, with comfortable beds. Our only sight issue was the lack of outside space, no grass so you had to walk the dogs up a nearby bridleway, and no line to dry towels - though a towel rail is provided that presumably runs off the wood-burner. But would certainly recommend :)

    The cottage itself was great and Scales is perfect if you are looking for a quiet holiday. However, if you do not like driving in narrow country lanes, this is not the place for you.

  • "A lovely little cottage my dog Rory and I had a wonderful time."

    I would recommend it to dog owners, the beach is a ten minute car ride away and there are some lovely walks around the cottage. The owner had left chocolates and biscuits for Rory. The heating is very flexible, with a log burner and electric radiators. Great value for money, we will book again.

  • "The property was well looked after and location good however the heating was insufficient without spending a small fortune on wood."

    The log burner does not heat enough to get hot water and the house was cold despite its use. This was impeded by the 4.5tog duvet on the bed and thin blankets provided. If you want to have a warm shower then this was again difficult as the water pressure was so low that it just trickled out. As the fuel burner is the main source of heating it is unbelievable that you are charged extra for it. You wouldn't pay extra for central heating so we fail to understand why the wood is only supplied at an additional cost. The property is located but for a couple who are experienced with wood burners as we have one at home and are well used to travelling in all weather's and accomodation types we were disappointed with the cottage.

    There was outside space but not secure but that didn’t matter as just round the corner was a bridle path for walks . An ideal base for the coast or Birkrigg common great walks. Loved my holiday didn’t want to come home. Owner very helpful

  • "Only reason for not re-booking this holiday is that we don't visit the same place twice."

    Mrs Dixon was extremely helpful and responded very quickly to an issue that arose. I would suggest an information leaflet listing nearby eating places that accept dogs and other helpful stuff would be a good idea as owners do in other properties. One negative feature, which is nothing to do with the property or the owners is the appalling driving on the village road. 20mp speed limit suggests that 30mph was being ignored. Most vehicles ignored the 20mph speed limit at all times of day and night. Many exceeding, in my view 35-40mph. This makes it dangerous to leave the parking area of the cottage.

The property

A pretty, semi-detached cottage, on the edge of the old village of Scales, just a mile from the sea and 4 miles from the ever-popular market town of Ulverston.

This charming Scales cottage provides warm, welcoming accommodation, with a spacious sitting room, cosy multi-fuel stove, two delightful bedrooms and a small, well-equipped kitchen with useful porch area.

In a quiet and peaceful area, with fabulous Lakeland countryside and the beautiful beaches and coastline of the Furness Estuary on the very doorstep, this Scales holiday cottage is close to the festival town of Ulverston, with its many pubs and restaurants and bi-weekly market, whilst the sandy beaches of the Furness coast and Coniston, with its mountain biking, climbing and watersports, are just a short drive away.

With Eskdale Railway, the World of Beatrix Potter and the fabulous Lake District National Park all within easy reach, this is a wonderful holiday location and a welcoming Scales cottage, any time of year.

Ulverston 4 miles.

Originating from the Norse word for huts, the small village of Scales quietly rests on the Cumbrian peninsula providing a great base from which to explore this lovely area. The ancient market town of Ulverston is just 4 miles away and whilst many Lakeland destinations have been developed beyond recognition, Ulverston still has an authentic feel and community spirit. The town boasts a street market every Thursday and Saturday and many festivals throughout the year, whilst being renowned as the birthplace of Stan Laurel and home to the only Laurel and Hardy museum in the world! With all the attractions of the Cumbrian National Park and the Furness Coast with its sandy beaches and good bird watching within easy reach, and the nearby family attractions of the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, the South Lakes Wild Animal Park and Muncaster Castle, this great area has plenty to offer!
