We were a party of six and found every aspect of the Lodge more than adequate for our needs. As always every room was spotlessly clean and cosy despite the inclement weather. The kitchen is well equipped and the location is perfect for accessing the many shops, eateries and transport links that Settle has to offer.

  • "This is a very lovely property the beds are comfortable, plenty of room, there is no waiting for bathrooms as there are 4 with showers and a downstairs WC."

Obviously I understand with the price of energy these days that the heating could not be on all day, but on some of the days, it was a little bit cold when the heating went off after 10am and did not come back on until after 2pm and there were a few cold days when we were there so we could have done with the heating. Fantastic having the dishwasher and my niece really enjoyed cooking in the nice size kitchen. Ample space in the living/dining room for everyone to sit down. This is a fabulous property and would recommend it to anyone with big families. Thank you James and Sue.

Whitefriars was perfect for our needs, but there were only 6 of us staying there, so can't comment for larger groups. The only problem we faced was not being able to get a meal in any of the pubs (we couldn't pre-book as we were hiking every day and no idea what time we would get back). It was particularly nice having a bathroom each so there was no 'queuing' after a day's hike! And the beds where extremely comfortable - thank goodness! We did some excellent walks from Whitefriars without having to drive anywhere - we did catch the train to Horton-in-Ribblesdale to do Penn-y-ghent and then walked back to Settle - hard work, but very rewarding.

Convenient location for the shops and restaurants of Settle and for accessing some stunning walks. Very quiet at night and over the weekend; 2 of the 4 bedrooms get a bit of traffic noise on weekday mornings but not too much of an issue at this time of year when we didn't need the windows open. • "The property was first class, from the huge sofas, to the 8 seater dining table which we made use of during our stay."

The beds were extremely comfortable and having 3 en-suites in the double/king size bedrooms was fantastic, this left the bathroom on the landing free for me, I stayed in the family room with the 3 single beds. We did not get a chance to use the table outside as it was a little bit cold but if we did come in the summer I’m sure we would have. There is a lovely kitchen with everything you would want from an oven, microwave, toaster, dishwasher, two fridges, plates, cups, glasses and all the cutlery you could want, the welcome gift of tea, coffee, milk and biscuits was most welcome after a four hour journey so thank you Sue and James. In the local area you have two co-ops one small one at the petrol station, 20 second walk from Whitefriars Lodge and the a larger one further into the village. I can also recommend the Golden Dragon Chinese and the Fish shop just across the road. If you get a chance to go into Skipton we found a lovely place to eat called Dales Cottage Cafe & Grill, we had their roast dinners which were huge and the service is wonderful, this is a popular place, so please be prepared to wait or book a table. Overall we had a wonderful stay in Whitefriars Lodge and would recommend this property Angela, Maria, Jade and Jordan

The house itself is roomy and comfortable and the beds were also comfortable. There's a TV with Sky available but we didn't have it on as we were either walking during the day or nipping out to the pub at night. As you may know Settle is located in the heart of some great walks and fantastic views, it didn't fail to deliver. The off road parking was great as it meant we didn't have to worry about leaving cars in local car parks, you could get three cars in or maybe four at a push. We arrived to find some tea, coffee, milk and biscuits which was a nice touch, just what we needed after our journey up there. Would we stay again - absolutely. Next time we wish to gather in Settle, this will be the property we seek out again.

  • "We had a fantastic long weekend in Whitefriars Lodge."

It's really nicely decorated and well-equipped, and the accommodation is great for a bigger party - it will accommodate up to nine, with two double rooms, three singles in one bedroom, and a further bedroom with a double that can be converted to two singles, which we chose. There's a huge comfortable living/dining room, with a massive table for nine to eat around, in addition to the small table in the kitchen. The property is close to but not actually on the main street, which is good for noise levels, and has a slightly quirky layout, being on first and second floors so the front door is actually up an iron stairway - you can see it in the pictures. The communication with James and Sue, the owners, was great, with lots of help on directions and things to do. Settle is a great location, really central for lots of walking and biking in the Dales, and the town itself is lovely, with three pubs within five minutes walk and a reasonably-stocked Co-op attached to the garage a one minute walk away. There's a bigger Co-op and a Booths within ten minutes walk. We had a really good meal in the Golden Lion. Whitefriars Lodge is thoroughly recommended and we're already booking for next year!

We found plenty of comfortable beds, plenty of bathrooms (and decent showers), a well equipped kitchen, large dining table and a living room, with books and board games, flyers for local takeaways and attractions, and we were even left a little welcome hamper. Settle is an ideal base for a range of walks to suit all abilities and for sight seeing. All our party were delighted with the weekend we spent there and, despite the rain, enjoyed the Treasure Trail which took us to interesting areas of the town we were unaware of. There was a good choice of restaurants, pubs and cafes which we did our best to sample. The owners have worked hard to refurbish the property and ensure that it is well furnished and equipped. It is very comfortable and did not seem crowded, even with eight people. Everyone was extremely happy with our stay and agreed we should return, as our weekend was over far too quickly. The kitchen was well equipped and the welcome basket very much appreciated after the long drive. The kitchen table was perfect size wise for our smaller group, but the main dining area would easily meet the needs of a larger group. The sofas were extremely comfortable (perfect for post hill walking flaking out) and the owners had made good use of the layout of the room. The bedrooms were gorgeous - our 11 year old is now angling for a king size bed. Our room was well laid out and the bed was suitably comfortable. We particularly liked the shower - wonderfully powerful and with a temperature switch that actually responded to your changes - I could have spent hours in there. The proximity to the town was a concern when we booked - we normally book more remote accommodation, but we were not disturbed at all by the comings and goings of Settle. I would heartily recommend this let to anyone - being in the town allows for access to all the facilities of Settle (you are a short hop from the river walk, the train station, the two main supermarkets and all the pubs and shops). The owners are next door and were really friendly and genuinely interested in whether you were enjoying your stay (but not intrusive!). Watch out for the bats flying overhead in the evenings - lovely to see. (An added benefit is that the house is right on top of a Pokestop, so any Pokemon Go players can get items without leaving the sofa!).

The property

Historic Whitefriars Lodge is a newly converted luxury four bedroom holiday cottage ideally located in the centre of the thriving market town of Settle with the benefit of private parking, exterior dining and bathrooms for all four bedrooms.

Lovingly restored by the owners, the house has a new lease of life and awaits up to nine friends and family wishing to holiday in comfort in the Dales.

The cottage features four generously sized bedrooms each with their own bathroom, a well-equipped kitchen, comfortable lounge and dining area.

With quality restaurants, good local pubs, takeaways, cafes, a launderette, swimming pool, supermarkets and shops on your doorstep, Whitefriars Lodge is the perfect base to explore the Dales on foot, by cycle, car or train.

Settle station is just a five minute walk away giving access to the historic Settle to Carlisle railway line.

Settle is a great location for walkers, cyclists, climbers and cavers but is also a great base for visiting nearby attractions such as the beautiful village of Malham, historic Skipton with its medieval castle and bustling Kirkby Lonsdale.

From the Lodge visitors can walk to the nearby Hoffman Kiln at Langcliffe, get a fantastic view over the Dales from Attermire or walk to Feizor or along the river to Knight Stainforth and enjoy a delicious coffee and cake at the local cafes.

Intrepid walkers could use the Lodge as a base to tackle Yorkshire’s Three Peaks – the Lodge enjoys a view of Penyghent from the front door.

Whitefriars is a historic property - a dwelling has occupied the site since the 1500s when it provided feeding, stabling and a loading area for the horse drawn carriages and carters of the day.

In 1814 the property was rebuilt as the grand “White Hall” and the yards converted providing further stabling and a coach house.

In the mid 1800s the house was served by four servants including a cook, two maids and a man to care for the horses and gardens.

In its hey day as a great house the property and garden covered all of neighbouring Whitefriars Car Park and benefited from a grand winding entrance opposite the church.

Guests can still see the historic greenhouse in the adjacent garden which grew produce for the “big house”.

Photographs of the house during this period are displayed above the dining table so guests can imagine themselves living in the Lodge in the Downton era!

About the location

SETTLE

Malham 6 miles; Skipton 17 miles; Kendal 25 miles.

The bustling market town of Settle lies at the south west rim of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, nestled beside the largest outcrop of limestone in Britain - a region of scars, cliffs, caves and potholes - amongst some of the most picturesque scenery in North Yorkshire. Tuesday is market day in Settle, when the square is filled with stalls offering a wide variety of crafts and goods. The market place is surrounded by local businesses, the centre being dominated by The Shambles, an historic three storey building with shops on two levels and houses above, and the Town Hall. There is a good selection of restaurants and pubs and a public swimming pool. The Victoria Hall has entertainment and other activities such as folk nights throughout the year. The famous Settle-Carlisle Railway crosses some of the most beautiful and inspiring upland scenery in the country. Natural attractions such as Malham Cove and Gordale Scar are within easy reach, as are the nearby Dales towns of Skipton and Malham. Settle is in the midst of excellent walking country and is a good base for touring the Dales, the Lake District and the Forest of Bowland.
