  • "I reported no hot water on Saturday 08:30 (we arrived Friday late afternoon as instructed) but we heard nothing so I phoned again Monday, no engineer until Tuesday?"

Sykes phoned later and boiler needed a specialist engineer and they couldn’t confirm if one would come. On Tuesday Sykes phoned no engineer but they offered another property at no extra cost I was happy to spend Tuesday (afternoon by this time) packing, cleaning and unpacking loosing half a day! The engineer appeared on Wednesday afternoon did a temp fix saying the boiler needed parts and don’t change the settings as it won’t work again. So we had limited hot water for the last two days of the holiday and the owner thought we were being unreasonable not moving. They offered a MAX of 5% refund which we thought was very bad show! Would we recommend no aside from the boiler it wasn’t cleaned properly either!

  • "The cottage was beautiful, lots of space, lovely and warm and extremely well resourced."

It is in a good location for visiting lots of different places and there were lots of walks close to the cottage too. The close proximity to the pub was an added bonus. We really enjoyed our stay and would love to return. However we did have a couple of issues. When we arrived, the showers were really dirty and one of the bathroom bins hadn’t been emptied which didn’t suggest a deep clean had taken place. There were no cleaning products provided so that we could address this. Also, when someone had a bath, there was no hot water or heating for more than 12 hours. We did manage to resolve this by returning the boiler to factory settings but had to download the instructions as those left in the airing cupboard weren’t helpful. A small welcome pack of a pint of milk, some tea bags etc would have been a nice addition, especially as there are no shops in the village and some people can only arrive late in the evening.

  • "The cottage was lovley and in a good location."

It was comfortable and we really enjoyed our stay. There were a couple of problems in that the cottage could have been cleaner particularly in the kitchen, the boiler went off twice meaning we had no hot water and the second time I couldn't reset it and one morning there were slug trails on the rug in the living room.

  • "The cottage was absolutely filthy when we arrived."

My sister-in-law and I spent a long time cleaning the downstairs so that we could be comfortable for our stay. There were slug trails all over the lounge rug, the fireplace was thick with dust and the hearth had an old spillage on it. The TV stand, again, thick with dust. We had to pull the sofa out as my little boy dropped something behind it, it was full of dust, fluff, and some strange black feathers. Our dog would not leave one of the sofas alone, eventually, he found a large dog chew down the cushion which did not belong to us! Can you imagine if a toddler had discovered that? The kitchen was disgusting. We had to place all the pots in the dishwasher before we could use them. There were chipped glasses that we placed on the top shelf. The floor has clearly not been mopped and the appliances were dirty, including a squashed fly on the washing machine. When you went upstairs, it was like a different cottage, bright and clean. The outside of the property was also a shock. The lawned area was lovely but to the side of the cottage, it was a different matter. There was a rusty old bbq, full of rainwater with a cigarette butt end in it. Some random pieces of wood on the top of a garden storage box and a (we presumed) a broken vacuum cleaner. The following morning, Sykes Cottages rang to see if all was ok. I said the cottage was nice but it was absolutely filthy. Also that we were annoyed that there was a note in the cottage to say that we were required to be out of the property for 9am on the day of departure (not 10am) as expected as the caretaker had to do a thorough covid clean. Seriously???? The member of staff from Sykes Cottages asked if we would like the cleaner to return. I refused as we had done the cleaning ourselves as it was so bad. I then emailed Sykes Cottages with our disappointment of the standard of the cottage along with photos. That was on the Saturday. A week later, I still have not had a reply. For the price of the accommodation, we were expecting a much higher standard. Very, very disappointed.

  • "We had a lovely week at Smithy cottage."

The cottage is surprisingly large and roomy. Great for the dogs as it has a fully enclosed garden so they could go in and out without worry of them disappearing. The cottage itself is quite basic and is beginning to look a little tired. It does need a lick of paint in places and generally a little TLC throughout. Previous reviews have mentioned that the cottage wasn’t very clean. We did find it to be a bit hit and miss. Some rooms had obviously been cleaned well while others looked as though they hadn’t been touched. However, the positives outweigh the negatives and we had a very enjoyable week. One suggestion that I will make is that the cottage could supply a simple welcome pack of milk, bread etc. There is no shop in the village so it would be a nice extra and this is the first cottage in several years that I’ve been to that hasn’t provided one. Also a few dish washer / washing machine capsules would have been good too.

  • "Our stay in Smithy Cottage was fantastic."

The cottage was lovely and spacious. The beds and furniture where all very comfy. We ate out some evening but on the evening we did stay in the kitchen was equipped to enable a nice meal to be cooked. There was an information file provided in the cottage which was very informative and helpful. The location of the cottage was fantastic. The local pub literally less than 2 minutes walk was lovely. Staff where helpful and friendly and the food was very nice and very reasonably priced. I have a gluten intolerance which they catered for and even had gluten free lager. We took our dogs with us and there was plenty of places to take them for a walk of a morning and evening within the village. It was a 10 minute drive in to Penrith, where there is a good selection of supermarkets to stock up on essentials: Morrisons, Aldi and Booths. It was a 5-8 minute drive to Pooley Bridge which was an amazing place. Plenty of pubs, some shops and access to the Lake. We had lovely weather and the kids went swimming in the Lake everyday. You can also get the Ullswater Steamer from Pooley Bridge which is a nice trip out. We also did Paddleboarding. We hired our paddleboards from Ullswater Paddleboarding, which was about 25-20 minute drive from the cottage. We had a fantastic staff at Smithy Cottage and would certainly recommend it.

  • "Spent one week at Smithy Cottage in May 2021."

Prior to arrival we had been worried about some online reviews suggesting poor cleanliness but we contacted Sykes about this and they checked with the owner and informed us that the owner had responded to comments and changed their cleaning company. We were not disappointed - the cottage was a great find, well laid out, homely and spotlessy clean. It lacked some basic kitchen utensils (serving spoon, pasta bowls, functional tin opener) but otherwise was perfect with everything we needed (loo roll, kitchen roll, tea, coffee, dishwasher tabs, washing up liquid etc provided). The location is within easy reach of the whole of the North Lakes whilst being off the main tourist routes. The village of Tirril is quiet with short walks from the door and a welcoming pub with good food. I would definitely stay again.

  • "We've just come back from a lovely weekend break at Smithy Cottage, Tirril."

On entry the cottage was beautifully warm, clean and spacious. We did not do too much cooking during our break, but found the kitchen was very well equipped with usual pots, pans and crockery. The adjoining conservatory is small and only has 2 chairs, thankfully we had some camping chairs with us, so we could all enjoy the conservatory for our morning coffee. The lounge was very comfortable, however it did not have a ‘starter pack’ of kindling or logs for the open fire, (which thankfully we did not need in May) - so those that love an open fire, particularly during colder seasons should take that into consideration. Underfloor heating made the whole property very warm and cosy. The bedrooms were well appointed and the beds (we used the 2 en-suite rooms during our stay) were so comfy and the showers were lovely. I would certainly stay there again

the pub was great and you should mention it more , the wi-fi was a bit hit or miss as it did not work for 3 days and only then on the phones and not on the tablets or ipads the accommodation had everything and could not be faulted , but it could do with a small lick of paint here and there as it made the cottage unloved a bit would recommend it despite these issues

  • "Very spacious and well-equipped cottage handily situated between Penrith and Ullswater; on this road but not too noisy."

View from the back was of fields, which we enjoyed very much. The pub a few doors away was good - competent pub food and very friendly and efficient. Bus service was useful - every 2 hours to Ullswater when we were there (early July), every 2 weeks in the high season. Only gripe was that the wi-fi was very slow - only just about usable; a small criticism of a very good cottage, though.

About the location

Penrith 6 miles.

The picturesque village of Pooley Bridge sits on the northerly edge of Lake Ullswater in the Lake District National Park. The name Pooley came to be due to the forming of a large pool, which was left by the fast flowing River Eamont, and the word Bridge was later added when a bridge, which is now 250 years old, was built over the river. Pooley Bridge has many traditional inns and tempting tea rooms, plus the Ullswater Steamers depart from the village, from where a tranquil cruise down the lake to the villages of Glenridding and Howtown can be enjoyed. There are numerous walks with breathtaking views nearby, plus a short walk up to Dunmallard Hill reveals fascinating Iron-Age remains, whilst the towns of Penrith and Keswick are within driving distance. Pooley Bridge is an ideal base for a cottage holiday stay in the stunning Lake District.
