  • "A lovely, spacious cottage in a delightful setting."

The whole cottage has a warm, cosy feel and the kitchen is well-appointed. An ideal base for exploring Cumbria, the Yorkshire Dales, Co. Durham or the Northumberland moors.

  • "Rainbow cottage is fantastic."

We were 4 adults, 4 children and a dog and the cottage was ideal, spacious and really well equipped in the kitchen for making meals when we needed. Pam and Steve were really friendly and went out of their way to make sure we had a lovely stay. They have great neighbours too selling fresh eggs and home made marmalade! The outdoor space is amazing for the children and they loved their bike rides past all the farm animals to Soulby park. We will definitely be visiting again.

  • "We really were looking forward to our week but it just didn't match the expectations set by the photos and our experiences of other cottages."

On arrival we took the dogs for a quick walk and then the children went exploring while we unpacked the cars. We didn't get a chance to talk to the owners as we weren't sure where they lived in the group of houses. We didn't realise that there was a horse that was put out in the field not long after we arrived and the children were unaware so we caused some concern that the gate to the field was left open and it could have escaped. It wasn't mentioned prior to that or I would have made sure everyone knew. Similarly, a conversation about where the children could play that wouldn't cause an issue would have been good as there is no WIFI and so we expected them to be able to play outside. Inside, I understand that many things have changed due to COVID but little things like advising to bring your own salt and pepper etc would have been useful. The kitchen is well stocked with crockery and utensils but some of them are needing replaced soon. Some plastic fixings for the dishwasher trays need replacing. Whilst there are three large cupboards there isn't much usable storage space for groceries etc so had to have everything out on the worktop It is a well laid out cottage with ample room and the beds are comfortable. Outside, the garden furniture is in need of a paint and it would have been nice to have all the chairs arranged around the table, as if the owners expected guests. The outdoor drying line is a plastic rope tied to a tree and the garden rail fence which meant that few things could be dried outside so we used the drying rack in the kitchen instead. For a family on holiday, it would be good to have access to a rotary dryer. The inner courtyard is a missed opportunity. It is a sun trap and would be a lovely place to sit outside with a cup of tea and a book or gather in the evening with the family and not have to worry about the dogs running off, but the cobbles were thick with nettles and weeds and there was just a single wooden bench to sit at. I wasn't sure what was in the pots but it looked like thistles. With a bit of weeding, some flowers in pots and comfortable garden furniture it would have made for a delightful retreat and elevated the experience to somewhere you'd want to come back to. Instead, it wasn't very appealing. It's the first time I've been disappointed with a cottage. I didn't feel I could relax and let the kids potter about but there were some lovely walks around the farm and Soulby. It would suit others I'm sure but just didn't work for us as well as I hoped. A few little changes would make it a real treat and welcoming.

Stephens knowledge of the area, the flora and fauna was lovely to share, Stephen clearly cares about the environment which was a joy to behold. I would have no hesitation in recommending you. Our recent stay in Rainbow Cottage was an enjoyable and comfortable week, there was a lovely welcome of flowers, fruit, wine and chocolates and Stephen took our elderly mother on a ride around the farm on his quadbike which she really enjoyed. The area is beautiful with plenty of local walks and cycles rides from the cottage and car trips. We also enjoyed watching the horses, rabbits and various birds. Thank you for a lovely week.

  • "Rainbow Cottage is absolutely fantastic!"

! We went for a family holiday with my mother who is wheelchair bound and it was an absolute dream. Not only is the cottage itself absolutely gorgeous and in an idyllic location, but for wheelchair users its perfect. So easy to get around, completely accessible, big bathroom with grab rails and wheel in shower (if you ask there are toilet risers and frame too which Pam kindly provided). Plus Pam and Steven are some of the nicest hosts you could wish for, they are just next door and on our first morning popped in to ask if we would like a guided trip up the fell behind the house, something my mum would never have been able to do in her chair - not a problem for steven who has a trailer and a quad bike and who (ever so carefully) towed mum up stopping frequently to tell us about the surrounding landscape and farm life and admiring the stunning views, it absolutely made mums day (and ours). This place is really special and we highly recommend it.

An iron and board available if needed but bring own hairdryer. Kirkby Stephens nearby offers a good choice of places to eat of which some are dog friendly, but would advise booking beforehand for The Black Bull - they hold a quiz night on Thursday evening. The only negative was the market day on a Monday comprising of just three stalls. The shopkeepers very friendly and welcoming. The Lakes, Barnard, Penrith, Carlisle all within an hour's drive or relaxing at the cottage enjoying a barbecue and soaking up the peaceful surroundings as a good second option. A Co-op, butchers, mountainware shop is in Kirkby Stephens as is a petrol station and other independent shops. Highly recommend the cottage.

Thankfully the owner was absolutely fine but it could have gone very wrong as the information was not passed on.
