  • "Property is well positioned, spacious and the garden is superb."

Our 3rd stay which says a lot about what’s on offer. Makes a wonderful base for exploring the Lakes and we particularly liked the fact we could securely store our electric bikes. Unfortunately access to the spa /swimming at the local hotel is no longer included which was a big bonus in our case as we generally holiday out with the summer season. The bathroom carpet would benefit from renewal as it is stained. The runner downstairs also moves around quite a bit and could be regarded as somewhat of a trip hazard, it is needed to prevent soiling of the carpet on entering the area but perhaps wooden/laminate flooring to that area would be a better option. On the whole a lovely property that provides excellent value for money and a peaceful retreat

The cottage was excellent and we loved the lake district and all the activities. You need to remove the bit about burnside hotel on the pic though as we wanted to go swimming at the hotel but this was no longer available. Thx.

We had great weather and the cottage at this time of the year had the benefit of the full bloom of surrounding flowers and gardens. Facilties were great and we would definitely go back. Thank you for providing us with a lovely cottage as a base for our motorbike adventures in the Lakes.

Inside cupboards were dirty and in some cases broken, cutlery in drawer was dirty, some even had remnants of food on them, we took 2 knives forks and spoons boiled them and used them for the week. Work surfaces were sticky as was dining table.Windows in living area were painted shut could not open them at all.Paintwork old tired dirty and scraped in places.Dead flies and wasp still at kitchen window, even the remote control was held together with cellotape. The garden area was ok but could do with a good tidy , seen evidence of this happening on our last day.All in all we are totally disappointed in this accomodation and would not stay there again or recommend it to our worst enemy. We have used Sykes a number of times but this has really put us off would be reluctant to do so again if this is the type of standard you could expect. We have take photographs of all our points.

  • "Hello, The house was lovely, in a great location."

A few things that the owner should know. The pass to the Lakes Hotel for the spa facilities, guests would appreciate knowing that there is no access to the hotel by car. The Can opener needs replacing it doesn't work The switches on the cooker hob work but numbers are difficult to see so it took a few days to work out The main light in the bedroom doesn't work The shower mat needs replacing Radiator in the main bedroom needs looking at sometimes on and warm other nights cold. Your email stated the owner would contact me at 4pm, prior to my arrival but didn't. Apart from the above an enjoyable stay Best wishes Louise Cartlidge

Thank you for your feedback via Sykes Cottages. As we are based in East Yorkshire we rely heavily on feedback so it is nice to receive it. In answer to the points you have raised our housekeeper, Debbie Martin, is going to replace the shower mat and the tin opener. Debbie is also going to check the main light in the bedrooms and let us know if we need to instruct an electrician, however, Debbie did said that when she prepared the cottage for your arrival all the lights were working. Debbie is also going to bleed the radiator as the plumber has said that he thinks that will be the cause with the radiator. With regard to the Lakes Hotel, we were not aware that there is no access to the hotel car park so we will check with them and if this is always the case we will add it to the e-mail we send out prior to a guests stay. We do know that the numbers are worn on the hob but as it is our intension to replace the whole of the kitchen at the end of the season we thought that It would be ok for the time being. The Kitchen was due to be replace before lockdown but as with a lot of other things this had to be put on the back burner. Finally, our email does not state that we will contact guests at 4pm prior to arrival only that the cottage will be available to guests from 4pm. Once again we do very much appreciate guest feedback and we thank you for yours, it was very constructive and has given us the opportunity to address the points raised. We do hope you had an enjoyable stay in the lakes and that you will return to the cottage at some stage in the future. Kind regards, Screetons Property Owner

Easy short walk to ferry and Bowness centre. On busy days in the Lakes this is a beautiful quiet gateway yet so close to everything and a good base to explore further afield whether by car, bus or on foot.

  • "Very disappointing holiday, the listing for the cottage was incorrect."

its advertised with wonderful gardens and outdoor areas, which we were then informed by the owners 5 days before arrival, non of these facilities were available due to COVID. I'm sorry but COVID has been going on since march and we booked in June so they basically lied in the listing to get the booking, and then the small print of a general email 5 days before a holiday stating garden and summerhouse is closed is not acceptable. Upon challenging this the owners simply refused to even open the summerhouse and let us have an outdoor table and chairs. Their attitude to customer service is appalling, and they are hiding behind COVID to probably save them money on cleaning costs at the sacrifice of customers enjoying well needed breaks. The cottage is small, the main bedroom doesn't even have a kingsize bed, just a small double, all mattresses need replacing, wallpaper is pealing, bath panels are broken, carpets are stained and covered up with poor quality mats and the kitchen and contents are far from clean and fresh..... In summary I would choose a different cottage!

Disappointed garden furniture was locked away and no access to spa due to covid 19. Would have expected reduction in fees as we paid for those extras and would have taken a cheaper cottage otherwise. Flowers and biscuits a nice touch. Kitchen well equipped and plenty of cleaning agents available. There could be a wasps nest outside bathroom window - found at least half a dozen wasps in there daily EVEN THOUGH window was closed,

Felt very relaxed from the moment we arrived access to the hotel swimming pool was an added bonus with having my little girl on a few rainy afternoons. We will defiantly return my only criticism was it is a little further out of Bowness than suggested in the write up but after a few days it really didn’t matter. Having deer, rabbits and an abundance of birds on our doorstep was much preferred.

The cottage is cosy, without feeling cramped. Every detail is considered, including candles, a laid fire and comfy dressing gowns, making the cottage feel like home and wonderful to return to following a day of walking or exploring. We met both the housekeeper and the gardener, who were helpful, cheerful and informative. The walk into Bowness-on-Windermere alongside the lake is flat and easy, taking about 20 minutes. For us the location was excellent,as Bowness was very busy over the Bank Holiday weekend, it was a super retreat! It was also a great location to be based at, we explored the ares from the cottage north to Keswick, south to Newby Bridge, and used the ferry to experience Coniston. Our only complaint is that we didn’t have long enough to do everything we wanted so we will return, we will not hesitate to book Gavel Cottage again!

It is set in a lovely location away from noise and distractions but so close to walks etc. The cottage itself is lovely, well set out, great facilities and kitchen, warm and cosy with rooms that are spacious and comfortable. Plus the best bit for us was the little ones enjoying a real fire to relax in front off surrounded by cosy rugs and the Christmas decorations! Too improve it more, it could have a cot and high-chair to cater for babies, but other than that, its a great little place.

Would love to stay here again. Everything clean and tidy. The garden waa lovely and peaceful. We did enjoy our stay. The only downside part was the parking. The allocated parking was for 3 cottages and you wouldn't have got three cars in there and get out let alone reverse parking. Luckily we were the only car parked there but even then we found it a struggle to park and get out. You do need a little car.
