  • "Been before and this little cottage never fails to make our time in the Lakes special."

Lovely little welcome note from the hosts which is a fab touch. Cottage is equipped with all you’ll need , we did take a casserole dish but that’s our preference. Only issue we had this time was the toilet cistern would overflow at times. Will be booking again later in the year I’m sure.

Happy to hear you had a lovely week in Shamrock Cottage. Thank you for bringing the toilet cistern issue to our attention, this has now been fixed. We do provide casserole dishes, apologies that you were unable to find them. We look forward to welcoming you back again this year. Property Owner

  • "Shamrock cottage in Allithwaite is a special little place."

Very warming and we could tell this place comes from love. Set in a beautiful location with the lovely historic little village of Cartmel only 1 3/4 miles up the road. The fire was delightful after a cold snowy December's day walk, back to snuggle with a glass of red and a movie and a roaring fire was simply splendid. We would recommend this place to anyone wanting to escape the business of working life, it offers everything one needs to relax and just switch off.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I checked it on changeover this weekend and found that the stop tap had been moved slightly, possibly when a pan had been put away in the cupboard where it is located. All back to normal now. Property Owner

The property itself was very homely and clean. Nice touch with the little vase of fresh flowers on arrival together with the milk coffee, biscuits etc.. The decking area was above the bathroom and although the climb was a bit steep and narrow, once there the views were terrific. We were able to see Blackpool Tower on a clear day. It was also a great suntrap were we could enjoy our coffe (or wine!). Overall a very pleasant stay.

Only freeview on the telly though - you'd need to take a streaming stick like Roku to get Netflix etc

Glad you enjoyed your stay. Thanks for bringing the tv issue to our attention, we weren’t aware of this as it hadn’t been highlighted previously. We have now rectified this and the Smart TV is now working as it should. Property Owner

The steps up to the terrace are quite steep but the terrace seating area is a nice sun trap and has lovely views of the surrounding countryside. A great base to explore the surrounding area, 5 minutes in the car to Grange-over-sands and Cartmel with a dog friendly pub with good food a short walk away. The owners are very helpful and took the trouble to warn us regarding travel conditions on the M6 and also when we left something behind. The welcome gifts were much appreciated. All in all would much recommend.

It's in a good location for exploring the lakes and coast with plenty to do. We were made very welcome at the local pub, which had good food and good service.

  • "The cottage is marketed as “dog friendly”, however the lack of outside space at the property means you’ll have to travel out of the village to exercise your dog properly as dogs are prohibited from using green spaces in the village by order of the parish council (signs are prominently displayed everywhere)."

The cottage itself is beautiful and the welcome gifts of wine and biscuits were greatly appreciated. It’s ideally situated for travelling around the lakes and there’s a pub serving excellent food a five minute walk away (which also allows dogs in).

We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay in our cottage. As dog lovers ourselves, we know how important it is to be able to take your dogs with you on holiday. As in most villages in the area owners are requested by the local council for dogs not to foul footpaths etc but taking a dog for a walk on the lead is still perfectly acceptable. There are plenty of walks around the local area where you can let your dog off the lead eg Humphrey Head, Hampsfell, Templand and Cartmel racecourse. Property Owner

The vacuum cleaner at property doesn't work properly needs replacing ,nice break enjoyed it the rubbish bin gets filled up quickly and only gets emptied every 2 weeks might be a idea to get a private company to empty in between when you have full bookings

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry that the vacuum cleaner wasn’t working properly for you and you had issues with the build up of rubbish. Not sure when during your holiday you discovered about the vacuum cleaner but we would happily have replaced it had you let us know as we don’t live too far away from the cottage. As you know, we always encourage our guests to let us know if there is anything we can do to help during their stay. We would have collected any excess rubbish had this been brought to our attention.Glad you enjoyed your holiday, and look forward to welcoming you back. Property Owner

  • "Lovely little cottage very comfortable, clean and well equipped."

We had an issue with the garden, which is not really a garden just a terrace. The steps are extremely steep and very narrow I am not very tall and only quite slim but even I had to go up part of them sideways. Our old dog could not manage them at all and she's just a bit big to carry up. Nice views over the fields but the village it's self is not the prettiest and very busy traffic wise with no foot paths. We did sometimes have a problem parking outside. I personally would not class it as dog friendly, as our dog likes to lay on the grass.

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry that you found accessing the terrace a little difficult, hope this didn’t inconvenience you too much during your holiday. Property Owner

Very clean and warm. Super bed, white fresh linen. We are exploring various areas of the Lakes. The location isn't one of the prettiest we've stayed at, there was only one walk from the doorstep of the cottage taking us to Humphreys Head. The one pub in the village serves excellent food with very good service but isn't a quaint type of pub for those who want to relax in front of a fire. Cartmel is a very small pretty village and just 10 minutes away, with good walks around. Super little cottage but not for us for a revisit.

Jennifer was great at being in touch both before and during the trip and the little cottage had everything we needed. The log burner kept us cosy and the beds were warm and comfortable. It truly felt like a home away from home. If you do have children, the play park is well worth a visit, as is the little charity shop/cafe on the way up the hill to the park - bought a few treasures for a few quid! We drove to nearby lakes over the time we were there (Grasmere, Coniston and Windermere were all within an hour). We also enjoyed visits to Sizbergh castle, Wray castle (if you have kids - this is great fun), Lakeside via the steam railway, Fell Foot and Grange-over-sands. We would highly recommend popping into The Hazelmere in Grange for freshly baked goods and tea!

The property

Shamrock Cottage sits in the small village of Allithwaite near Grange-over-Sands, on the southern tip of the Cartmel Peninsula.

Resting in a quiet area near the market town of Kendal, it is a cosy, traditional dwelling perfect for a small family or couple.

Explore Morecambe Bay and a whole host of other attractions before being welcomed back into the cosy lounge.

Wrap yourselves around the woodburner and enjoy the company of your loved ones while you chat about your adventures over a hot brew.

The kitchen is small and compact, yet equipped enough for some home-cooking while you are away, complete with a dining table set for three.

Climb the carpeted staircase and half way up the landing you will find the family bathroom, well-appointed for those early mornings getting ready for the day ahead.

From the kitchen is a back door leading up to the raised decked area accessed via a set of steep steps, unsuitable for very small children yet a perfect little suntrap for you to soak up a balmy evening.

Pretty sunsets can be enjoyed on the patio with a glass of wine in hand and views over green fields towards Morecambe Bay as you reflect on the day.

Allithwaite conveniently offers a local pub and you can find a shop and Post Office in Grange-over-Sands, a quiet resort nearby with plenty of things to occupy your time in and around the area.

The Cartmel Peninsula is a lesser known part of Cumbria, yet boasts the qualities of a true hidden gem, with rolling fells and a patchwork of meadows interlaced with quiet country lanes.

Walking and cycling come in abundance and you have a host of towns and villages worth a visit.

Attractions of the region include Holker Hall and Gardens, a privately owned country house, the verdant hilltop of Arnside Knott, while the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway in the Leven Valley allows you to travel back in time on one of its steam trains.

You have plenty to see and do, with a charming retreat you will want to book time and again.

About the location

GRANGE-OVER-SANDS

Cartmel 2 miles; Lake Windermere 8 miles; Kendal 10 miles.

The charming Edwardian resort of Grange-over-Sands is set between the Lake District fells and Morecambe Bay and offers one of the mildest climates in the north of England. Formerly a small fishing village, the introduction of the Furness Railway transformed Grange-over-Sands into a fashionable Edwardian resort. Today, the town has much to offer the visitor including a traffic-free promenade, delightful ornamental gardens, golf courses, brass band concerts and excellent bird watching. Just a short drive away are Lake Windermere (8 miles), the villages of Bowness-on-Windermere and Hawkshead, which still retain the charm and character that has endeared them to so many, and the home of sticky toffee pudding, Cartmel, with its famous racecourse and the L’Enclume restaurant, which has been voted the 4th best restaurant in the UK. Other attractions in the area include Levens Hall, with its Elizabethan Hall and world famous topiary gardens, Holker Hall, Furness Abbey, Sizergh Castle, a National Trust medieval house and gardens, and Conishead Priory, a Gothic revival country house. There is also the 25 mile Cistercian Way which starts at Grange over Sands. Set amidst the southern lakes, the attractive town of Grange-over-Sands makes a superb base from which to enjoy the whole of this magical area.
