  • "A lovely cosy cottage which was ideal for family to stay in whilst we all got together for Christmas in the village."

Easy walk to the local and good walking from the front door when it stopped raining!

  • "All as expected in general."

“Welcome pack” was disappointing only because there was a single packet of biscuits which were broken and only one chocolate sachet for a cottage for four. No fresh milk. However, the tea bags were very welcome as I’d forgotten mine. Hunted around for a welcome note which was eventually found in the middle of a concertina file with instructions on the appliances. Could have been a little more friendly and signed by actual names instead of “the owners”. Apart from these trivialities which were more poignant after a nightmare on the M6, a 200 mile journey and a horrible stressful week at work. A fabulous cottage with a beautiful outlook of the fells. Quiet and isolated. Ideal for walkers. No public buses on this little road which we found out for ourselves. We had a good car so not an issue. Glad I used initiative to bring my own shower mats for safety. Talking of safety, not that I would have used them, but two cast iron casserole pans were located on the top shelf which would have been impossible to handle and reach without steps (available in the cupboard). All the usual kitchen equipment was plentiful. Make sure you book a table at the Queen’s Head in advance of your arrival if you’re planning on going out for a local hot meal when you get there after driving 200 miles, as me and my 86 year old mother were refused a table for two at five thirty pm as it would have been full by six according to the landlady. Fair enough. Booked for Sunday lunch which didn’t disappoint. Super comfortable cottage and beautifully decorated and furnished.

Dear Ms W, thank-you so much for scoring our cottage 94 out of 100.We will work hard to improve further. It was very kind of you to consider Applethwaite a " fabulous cottage with a beautiful outlook of the fells,..... super comfortable and beautifully decorated ", thanks again, the owners Property Owner

  • "We had a wonderful week in Applethwaite cottage, brilliant walks from your front door."

Great tea room just up the road. The cottage was very well decorated and cosy, we will definitely stay here again. Only negative if there was one of the neighbours parked just outside the gate, which with the entrance being a bit tricky made it more difficult. So possible a no parking sign there may help. There was ample free parking with in the drive so didn't see the need for that.

Thank-you Mrs G for your very kind comments, we are so pleased that you enjoyed the cottage as much as we do and look forward to welcoming you back in the future, kind regards, H & G Property Owner

  • "We left feeling very positive about our stay at Applethwaite Cottage and have already recommended to our family."

Only issue we had was the waste. The majority of what we generated was recycling which all ended up in the landfill bin. We couldn't find any recycling bins at the cottage but we saw them all down the street which didn't make sense. If there were instructions regarding this then we missed them and we apologise.

Thank-you for your positive feedback Mr D. and recommendations to others. With regard to waste disposal, there is a notice in the kitchen explaining that Cumbria Waste collect the waste bins early Monday mornings and so we kindly ask guests to leave the bins outside the gate ,roadside, Sunday evening. The same notice explains that there is no need to separate re-cyclables as Cumbria waste do this at their depot.I hope this helps, the owners Property Owner

  • "Noise from drystone walking was not a problem luckily."

Neither was traffic a problem considering how close we were to the road. Peaceful location. More worktop space needed in kitchen catering for family of 4 even though we dined out occasionally. Twin beds in second bedroom would have been better than a double. Higher powered showers would have also been nice and second TV in bedroom with en-suite. Otherwise location idyllic and closeness to Mortal Man a bonus.

  • "Very pleased with the property."

Would have liked shelving in en-suite for toiletries. Drain plugs needed cleaned, other peoples hair in them. Parking tight if normal or large car, not helped by another cottage using 2 cars and 2 spaces. Fortunately it worked out okay

  • "I would like to say how much we enjoyed not only the amazing location but the high standard in which we found the cottage - everything was fabulous from the furnishings and bathrooms - spotless - even had wi fi so we could stay in touch if we needed."

It's perfect for 4 people in a central location for Ambleside and Windemere and we were also able to find a few walks locally without the need to drive - a welcome relief on a bank holiday ...We could also walk to 2 great local pubs for food and a well earned drink so we didn't mess up the kitchen too much- and with the weather even managed to have breakfast outside for 2 mornings with a great view of the valley opposite. I just wish we could always book the cottage and the weather!
