"A lovely place to stay."
Warm and comfortable, as I said in my previous review. Prompt reply from any queries.
"We stayed four weeks, first week on arrival bed linen not ironed?"
plus long black hairs. We stripped the bed and found mattress covers in both rooms covered in body fluids from months plus quilts and disgusting pillows protectors. Radiators not working, toilet freezing as no heater. Plumber arrived first to do safety service on the Monday and at this point we lost the use of the bathroom towel radiator. The washing machine back filled the kitchen sink. This is just a few things I could go on we ended up purchasing drain cleaner, pillows, quilt and washing machine cleaner etc.I did take photos so there is no confusion about what we have to put up with.
"A wonderful, high quality comfortable home from home."
Easy booking and the owner is very kind and helpful,
"Very comfortable property, as photos on listing presented."
"We enjoyed another great week in this relaxing, quiet and comfortable property."
It was very clean and comfortable. Great location. Directions to find it were accurate and helpful. We had a great time and look forward to returning soon
"The Retreat is a fabulous place to stay."
It's central location provides a great base for the surrounding area. Definitely a home from home, very well equipped and spotlessly clean. Wetheral itself has walking on its doorstep and a few eateries along with a post office and general store. Will definitely be returning next year.
"We were on a three week break and spent two at The Retreat with the middle week elsewhere."
The property is everything we look for in a house that has always been presented immaculately and equipped with everything you will ever need. The area is steeped in history with Carlisle ten minutes away by train if you want to leave the car behind. We are happy to recommend the property.
"We have used this house over a number of years."
It has proved to be the benchmark for other properties and as usual it was presented to a very high standard. We keep returning so that says it all. It is in a quiet location but well placed if you wish to explore the area and the Lake District is in striking distance. The owners are friendly, approachable and helpful with local information.
"We loved our stay at the Retreat."
The owner was helpful with any of our queries and the property was lovely and tastefully furnished. Unfortunately we had a dreadful journey up there owing to accidents on the M6 and huge delays. We cannot understand why you do not let the property from Saturday to Saturday as nowadays Friday travel is often difficult.
"Even with Sat Nav difficult to find property up a drive ( marked private)."
No picture of outside of property to help identification. Key safe held together with gaffer tape. On entry dripping tap, dirty crockery and cutlery. No welcome pack. No matches for log fire. No hand wash nor washing up liquid in the kitchen. No instructions as to how to put the heating on. When the heating was put on, the towel rail was burning hot at the bottom. Shower tray not draining properly. Hot water on geyser so has to be turned on fully to get hot water. No information to say this is the case. Initially no facility for differentiation of rubbish. Can’t comment on dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer as did not use them. Very disappointing, as the decor was as good as shown on the website.
Thank you for your feedback and we are pleased you liked the decor. Handwash will have been in the bathroom cupboard but we will ensure it is displayed in future. Washing up liquid and dishwasher tablets can be located under the kitchen sink and we will look at whether welcome packs can now be reintroduced. The heating is on a thermostat every morning and evening and the hot water is on a combi boiler. Hot water is available all day when the hot water tap is fully turned on. Future guests will be able to find the heating instructions in the blue info folder in the kitchen. Two green recycling boxes should be available outside the property. The key safe was secure at all times but has been replaced for aesthetic purposes and the towel rail and shower drain have also been checked and remedied as appropriate as soon as we were made aware and before the next guest arrival. "One of my best holiday."
"An absolutely lovely place to stay."
Well equipped, comfortable, relaxing, well appointed and a great base for the area. Would highly recommend and will be looking to stay again.
"Enjoyable stay, excellent facilities"
"Good location to tour Lakes, Scottish Borders and Hadrian’s Wall ."
food at nearby Wheatsheaf pub excellent - local people very friendly
"The only thing we would recommend is a clean up of the outdoor space at the entrance."
Also the outside sitting area could do with the flag stones cleaned the shed painted and flowers planted in the small flower bed. It would make a huge difference a more pleasant area to sit in.
"Such a lovely holiday home."
Comfortable, well equipped house. Would definitely recommend and visit again.
"A very well appointed and presented house."
A firm favourite with my wife and I.
"Wetheral is a great location for exploring North Lakes and is such a pretty village."
The Retreat was extremely comfortable and spacious with everything you could do want for a comfortable stay.
"This holiday cottage was a very quirky extension to the larger victorian house."
It was originally the servants quarters, however, it was a very comfortable home with the modern decor in keeping with the historical features. An added bonus is ample parking just outside the front door with the ability to bring shopping straight into the kitchen. Wetheral is a beautiful little village mainly situated around a village green. The Retreat is very well situated for travelling to the Lake District with lots to do in the local area. Good bus link Into Carlisle with the train station within a 5 minute walk if you want to go further a field. All-in-all a lovely cottage.
"Attached to a large country house."
No access to the garden in the photo but view it as you breakfast. Clean and tidy. Nicely and recently designed interior. Good village location. Pub, hotel, restaurant and village shop easy walking distance. The Eden Valley is an interesting area.
"We have stayed at the Retreat at least three time, so we know what to expect."
Its very comfortable and well equipped. The location in the centre of Wetheral is great. Its not the cheapest, but having stayed elsewhere you realise that you tend to get what you pay for. We will be back!
"Lovely house with a very beautiful well equipped kitchen spacious bedrooms and common areas such as hallway & landing - bathroom was a good size with a large shower."
"We specifically chose an area outside of the heart of the lakes to experience the rest of what Cumbria can offer."
We were not let down, from the closeness of Hadrians Wall, the countryside, river and Lake walks we have enjoyed it all. The accommodation is in the heart of the village which has pleasant areas to eat and local shops and a Train station if you don’t want to drive. We leave Wetheral wanting to come back, always a good sign.
"Comfortable, stylish and well-presented, The Retreat is aptly named."
In a picture-postcard village and overlooking the beautiful gardens of the main house the setting is peaceful, with local facilities within easy walking distance. An option of twin beds in one bedroom would have made this rental property absolutely perfect for our needs.
"The Retreat was a wonderful place to stay!"
The village of Wetheral is ideally located for exploring the north of Cumbria; the village itself has 3 great places to eat and drink. Walks can be accessed from the village, with the Wetheral circular trail being a particular favourite. The cottage itself was beautifully presented, well-equipped, clean and comfortable. We didn't want to come home!

Excellent place to stay so many places to explore the accommodation exceeded our expectations highly recommended will definitely be booking again
"Third time at The Retreat."
That tells you all!
"Only put "Met Expections" rather than "Exceeded Expectations" because we had stayed there before."
Really great place to stay in a wonderful location in the centre of Wetheral
"This cottage exceeded our expectations excellent location, dry clean well laid out even a jug of fresh milk and biscuits which was very welcome after a long drive."
Alisair and Anna were very accomodating. Beautiful part or the country, peaceful lots to do and see, the locals were also very friendly. Would definitely recommend the retreat and will be booking another visit 2019.
"A warm, comfortable, homely, well furnished apartment in a lovely village."
It is close to a pub, a hotel with a spa and a restaurant; all worth going to. Lots of wonderful walks and there is still a railway station, so you can go to Carlisle and Newcastle by train. We are returning again in 6 weeks time.
"Amazing house very well equipped with all you could require."
Really enjoyed our stay.
"As we had enjoyed our stay at The Retreat earlier in the year, we decided to book again when we wanted to visit the area in November."
We were encouraged to do so by the reduced rental charge for a week at that time of the year, when otherwise we would probably just have booked a weekend in a hotel. Again, the property was clean and comfortable in a location that is ideal for us.
"Very comfortable and beautifully appointed cottage."
Well equipped and welcoming. Great spot for options of visiting Hadrian’s Wall and the less well known but stunning scenery of the Eden Valley as well as being within driving distance of the Lake District and all it offers. Wetheral itself is a lovely village with well stocked village shop, small cafe, pubs and walks from the doorstep. A great place to stay.
"We really enjoyed our stay in this property - very comfortable, clean and well-equipped."
Fresh milk in the fridge was welcome for that first cup of tea before unpacking or shopping! Private parking at the door, or just a short walk to the bus stop and railway station. Quiet location, yet very close to the centre of the village with a well-stocked shop and choice of places to eat and drink. Pleasant walks locally and a good centre for exploring north Cumbria, Northumberland and south-west Scotland. We hope to return before too long.
"Cottage was faultless, Owners were lovely and helpful, would absolutely book again."
"Beautiful house, well decorated with all amenities you require."
lovely area with walks easily accessible. there is only one pub in the area that also provides food, there is also a local hotel that provides food and has a bar we ate and drank at both of these establishments and they were very nice. there is also a restaurant and bar but that was shut whilst we were there so i cannot comment. there is a local shop that is also a coffee shop but 1.7 miles away is a Co-op and 2.4 miles away is a 24 hour Tesco. the owners provide a detailed book on walks, shops, places to eat etc which was a lovely touch, along with leaving a small jug of milk, tea, coffee and sugar and a bag of short bread which we thought was lovely, they also called the day after we arrived to check everything was ok and as they next door they are always on hand if you need them.
"An exceptionally well appointed cottage."

The Retreat is a delightful, Victorian-style cottage resting as an attachment to the owner’s home right in the very heart of Wetheral.
Decorated beautifully throughout with exquisite oak furnishings, the property is very light and airy with spacious rooms.
Ideally, this cottage is for two couples or a family of three or four to get together in pleasant, tranquil surroundings and take a break from a busy work life.
You will be impressed by the open sitting room with its sumptuous sofas, period-style features and lovely long views of the well-maintained front lawn.
There is a door at the side of the sitting room which opens out onto a private yard for your personal use, where you can crack open a nice bottle of wine and soak up a summer evening.
The kitchen/diner is fitted with beautiful units and an oven/hob unit built into the grand inglenook fireplace.
Upstairs are fully-furnished, fresh, modern bedrooms and a bathroom, and also for your convenience there are extra storage cupboards at the top of the stairs.
Everything you need is close by; a mixture of shops, galleries, restaurants and pubs, along with some of the best attractions.
There is a whole wealth of historic places to visit in the surrounding area including Carlisle Castle, The Prior’s Tower and The Guildhall Museum, which is housed in the upstairs of Carlisle’s only medieval house.
Take a gentle stroll along River Eden in the village; parts of the riverbank here are surrounded by ancient woodlands, including Wetheral Woods, owned by the National Trust.
This well-located cottage is a great base whatever way you decide to make it memorable.
About the location
Carlisle 5.3 miles.
The village of Wetheral lies five miles from Carlisle in the north of Cumbria. With great transport links, Wetheral has a quaint village green and is overlooked by a restaurant, pub, village shop and tearooms, along with the Crown Hotel. A short steep walk takes you past the church and remains of the abbey to the River Eden. To the east, the 19th century viaduct towers above the river with some of the best salmon fishing in the country. Further along the river you can view a wonderful waterfall from Corby Castle, and woodland walks lead to the remains of the caves used in the 14th century. Carlisle – the Border City – is the main shopping, commercial and industrial centre in the northern half of Cumbria, with a museum, historic tours, and plenty of entertainment for you to enjoy at your own leisure.
Side patio with lockable bike storage only. No garden space area as in photographs.
