  • "A lovely place to stay."

Warm and comfortable, as I said in my previous review. Prompt reply from any queries.

  • "We stayed four weeks, first week on arrival bed linen not ironed?"

plus long black hairs. We stripped the bed and found mattress covers in both rooms covered in body fluids from months plus quilts and disgusting pillows protectors. Radiators not working, toilet freezing as no heater. Plumber arrived first to do safety service on the Monday and at this point we lost the use of the bathroom towel radiator. The washing machine back filled the kitchen sink. This is just a few things I could go on we ended up purchasing drain cleaner, pillows, quilt and washing machine cleaner etc.I did take photos so there is no confusion about what we have to put up with.

  • "The Retreat is a fabulous place to stay."

It's central location provides a great base for the surrounding area. Definitely a home from home, very well equipped and spotlessly clean. Wetheral itself has walking on its doorstep and a few eateries along with a post office and general store. Will definitely be returning next year.

  • "We were on a three week break and spent two at The Retreat with the middle week elsewhere."

The property is everything we look for in a house that has always been presented immaculately and equipped with everything you will ever need. The area is steeped in history with Carlisle ten minutes away by train if you want to leave the car behind. We are happy to recommend the property.

  • "We have used this house over a number of years."

It has proved to be the benchmark for other properties and as usual it was presented to a very high standard. We keep returning so that says it all. It is in a quiet location but well placed if you wish to explore the area and the Lake District is in striking distance. The owners are friendly, approachable and helpful with local information.

  • "We loved our stay at the Retreat."

The owner was helpful with any of our queries and the property was lovely and tastefully furnished. Unfortunately we had a dreadful journey up there owing to accidents on the M6 and huge delays. We cannot understand why you do not let the property from Saturday to Saturday as nowadays Friday travel is often difficult.

  • "Even with Sat Nav difficult to find property up a drive ( marked private)."

No picture of outside of property to help identification. Key safe held together with gaffer tape. On entry dripping tap, dirty crockery and cutlery. No welcome pack. No matches for log fire. No hand wash nor washing up liquid in the kitchen. No instructions as to how to put the heating on. When the heating was put on, the towel rail was burning hot at the bottom. Shower tray not draining properly. Hot water on geyser so has to be turned on fully to get hot water. No information to say this is the case. Initially no facility for differentiation of rubbish. Can’t comment on dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer as did not use them. Very disappointing, as the decor was as good as shown on the website.

Thank you for your feedback and we are pleased you liked the decor. Handwash will have been in the bathroom cupboard but we will ensure it is displayed in future. Washing up liquid and dishwasher tablets can be located under the kitchen sink and we will look at whether welcome packs can now be reintroduced. The heating is on a thermostat every morning and evening and the hot water is on a combi boiler. Hot water is available all day when the hot water tap is fully turned on. Future guests will be able to find the heating instructions in the blue info folder in the kitchen. Two green recycling boxes should be available outside the property. The key safe was secure at all times but has been replaced for aesthetic purposes and the towel rail and shower drain have also been checked and remedied as appropriate as soon as we were made aware and before the next guest arrival. It was originally the servants quarters, however, it was a very comfortable home with the modern decor in keeping with the historical features. An added bonus is ample parking just outside the front door with the ability to bring shopping straight into the kitchen. Wetheral is a beautiful little village mainly situated around a village green. The Retreat is very well situated for travelling to the Lake District with lots to do in the local area. Good bus link Into Carlisle with the train station within a 5 minute walk if you want to go further a field. All-in-all a lovely cottage.

Fresh milk in the fridge was welcome for that first cup of tea before unpacking or shopping! Private parking at the door, or just a short walk to the bus stop and railway station. Quiet location, yet very close to the centre of the village with a well-stocked shop and choice of places to eat and drink. The property

The Retreat is a delightful, Victorian-style cottage resting as an attachment to the owner’s home right in the very heart of Wetheral.

Decorated beautifully throughout with exquisite oak furnishings, the property is very light and airy with spacious rooms.

Ideally, this cottage is for two couples or a family of three or four to get together in pleasant, tranquil surroundings and take a break from a busy work life.

You will be impressed by the open sitting room with its sumptuous sofas, period-style features and lovely long views of the well-maintained front lawn.

There is a door at the side of the sitting room which opens out onto a private yard for your personal use, where you can crack open a nice bottle of wine and soak up a summer evening.

The kitchen/diner is fitted with beautiful units and an oven/hob unit built into the grand inglenook fireplace.

Upstairs are fully-furnished, fresh, modern bedrooms and a bathroom, and also for your convenience there are extra storage cupboards at the top of the stairs.

Everything you need is close by; a mixture of shops, galleries, restaurants and pubs, along with some of the best attractions.

There is a whole wealth of historic places to visit in the surrounding area including Carlisle Castle, The Prior’s Tower and The Guildhall Museum, which is housed in the upstairs of Carlisle’s only medieval house.

Take a gentle stroll along River Eden in the village; parts of the riverbank here are surrounded by ancient woodlands, including Wetheral Woods, owned by the National Trust.

This well-located cottage is a great base whatever way you decide to make it memorable.

About the location

WETHERAL

Carlisle 5.3 miles.

The village of Wetheral lies five miles from Carlisle in the north of Cumbria. With great transport links, Wetheral has a quaint village green and is overlooked by a restaurant, pub, village shop and tearooms, along with the Crown Hotel. A short steep walk takes you past the church and remains of the abbey to the River Eden. To the east, the 19th century viaduct towers above the river with some of the best salmon fishing in the country. Further along the river you can view a wonderful waterfall from Corby Castle, and woodland walks lead to the remains of the caves used in the 14th century. Carlisle – the Border City – is the main shopping, commercial and industrial centre in the northern half of Cumbria, with a museum, historic tours, and plenty of entertainment for you to enjoy at your own leisure.
