  • "Lovely cottage for a short stay, very clean and cosy."

Lemon cake and pint of milk was a nice touch and needed after a 3 hr drive. Nice base for visiting whitehaven, St bees and the lakes, we were particularly impressed with St bees with its priory and the man of St Bees.

  • "The owners contacted me prior to arriving which made the arrival process easy."

The property itself was high class, clean and comfortable. Milk and treats were left for our arrival which makes the break more special. The cottage itself has beautiful views and the wildlife you see is amazing. Woodpeckers, birds of prey, garden birds to name just a few. The weather wasn’t great so we spent more time in the cottage previously planned but this wasn’t an issue as it was so comfortable.

  • "I had a fantastic stay at the cottage, sadly it was for work but I had everything I needed to enjoy my stay as much as I could and felt comfortable from the very start."

I'm insisting on this as accommodation for any future work we're doing in the area as I couldn't recommend it enough. Thanks again!

  • "Beautiful cottage in a good location to explore all areas of the lake district."

The owners left a really useful guide for the area with their personal recommendations in, many of which we visited and really enjoyed. Would definitely stay there again.

  • "A lovely cottage located away from the busy Lake Distract areas which, due to being open plan, had a lovely spacious feel about it."

Thanks for the generous welcome pack of basics which greeted us on our arrival. The library seating area at the top of the stairs was a lovely touch as was the sizeable bathroom although we prefer a walk in shower facility. We found the cottage location convenient both for visiting the lakes and fells of the quieter western side of the Lake District and also the Cumbrian coast. The Beacon museum and harbour area in Whitehaven was well worth a visit . Our enjoyment of the cottage facilities would have been enhanced by a coffee table in the lounge area and an indoor clothes drier for those clothes where the tumbler drier was not appropriate. For self caterers we found some of the pans provided were flimsy and not really suitable from a safety aspect for the gas hob. A few extra items of crockery would have saved extra washing up at times. Whilst the cottage had no outdoor area itself ,we did enjoy watching a variety of birds frequenting the neighbour's bird feeders and views from the kitchen and upstairs windows.

  • "Little things but greatly improved the experience- the cottage was warm on arrival with lights on to welcome us in."

Cake on side to go with tea. Expected internet details in welcome folder- eventually found by TV after a couple of days. Great situation for the western fells. No view from the lounge but a delightful landing seat where you can watch the birds on a feeder with the river at the bottom.

  • "I was looking for a home away from home and it’s just what I got."

The moment I walked in I could see the owners have spent a lot of time and thought into making it a home. It was fully stocked with all amenities you would need, and a good supply of coffee, tea, milk, eggs and cake, etc. This was a nice touch. The bird and wildlife at the rear of the Propery gave me a nice distraction each morning and evening - plenty of chaffinches, goldfinches, bull finches, kestrels, ducks, hedgehogs...I didn’t see the deer unfortunately. Very useful for the Lakes and beaches, plus nearby Coop shop for provision a. The owners were very considerate and helpful. I will definitely consider staying there again.

With the Georgian town of Whitehaven and the delightful coastline just a few miles away, this holiday retreat is perfect for families and friends!

Step inside and take comfort in the living area, boasting a spacious open-plan layout, with a fabulous kitchen with integrated appliances.

The lounge area has two plush leather sofas for you to spread out on, as the delicious aroma of food fills the interior.

A small dining table is set to one side and offers a space to enjoy mealtimes and family board games.

Climb the stairs to find the bedrooms, the first being a king, the second bedroom offers a single bed for an additional guest.

Each bedroom has been neutrally decorated with light colours and hosts ample storage for your personal belongings.

Look out the Juliet balcony and take in the tranquil views; with a gentle river running by and rolling hills in the distance, you will instantly be at ease.

Leading on from the bedrooms is the beautiful modern bathroom containing a bath, WC, basin and a heated towel rail.

There is a delightful village pub around a 5 minute walk away from the property called The Keekle Inn, which boasts a beer garden and serves authentic wood-fired pizzas.

If you're looking a little further afield, why not stop for a rest at the Fox and Hounds, which serves food and a selection of real ales, before taking off to explore the surrounding countryside routes, including the stunning Ennerdale Water Circular walk that is good for all skill levels.

Accessed only on foot, it has no public roads, offering you the peace and tranquillity you crave!

Further outdoor activity can be enjoyed within the Lake District National Park, with the commanding Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England, just 20 miles away.

Why not take in the stunning landscapes from a different perspective on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Miniature Steam Railway, running a seven-mile line from Ravenglass to Dalegarth Station near Boot, in the Valley of Eskdale.

Explore the rugged coastline and you are likely to come across the town of Whitehaven, providing a great selection of pubs and restaurants, for that fine dining experience, with a plethora of independent shops and supermarkets for gathering any essentials.

There is also a public swimming pool and gym.

Nearby is Whitehaven Golf Club which offers an excellent bar and meal service and can be reached in less than 5 minutes by car.

St Bees is a short drive away, where you can find a fine beach and many wonderful walks along the clifftops, which are also home to one of England’s most important seabird colonies.

Here you can sit in the beachfront cafe and enjoy an ice cream made by Hartley's of Egrement.

Those history buffs will make time to visit Egremont Castle, Muncaster Castle a historic and Grade II listed building.

Riverside Cottage offers everything you could require for much-needed family escape, whatever time of year.

About the location

WHITEHAVEN

Saint Bees 4.6 miles; Seaton 9.5 miles; Bowness-on-Windermere 49.8 miles.

The West Cumbrian town of Whitehaven is situated on the coast between the sparkling sea and the Lakeland Fells. It was one of the first ‘planned’ towns in England and today can boast almost 250 Listed Georgian buildings and some beautiful parks and gardens. Today the town’s harbour is a designated conservation area and visitors can learn about the town’s history at the excellent Beacon Heritage Centre. The surrounding coastline has much to offer, not least its old smugglers villages, such as Ravenglass, and the red sandstone cliffs of pretty St Bees - now the start of Wainwright’s famous “Coast to Coast” Walk. Meanwhile inland you can enjoy the tranquillity of the Western lakes: Ennerdale, Loweswater, Crummock, Buttermere and Wastwater. Ennerdale is perhaps the most peaceful of all the lakes, with no public roads running along its National Trust owned shoreline.

Property only accepts children 4 years and older.
