  • "We were disappointed with it as it didn't seem to offer as much as we thought it should."

The steps to the upper floors were steep for young and old. There was no cleaning materials and the place wasn't spotless to start with. Dog hairs in one bath, cobwebs in kitchen, dead woodlice under a sofa and in a bedroom, no heating on as very few radiators were working we were glad of the heated towel rails. We had to contact the owner regarding no hot water in one art of the cottage and had to wait till the next day for that to be sorted as he was on holiday. We also had to report to him a rain leak in the ceiling of our bedroom, we solved this from becoming further damage as we put a large bin under leak with a towel in to absorb the noise as it rained heavily in the night. Lack of kitchen trays, we bought some from local supermarket as we do our own meals and the trays in one oven were not fit to use. Table not big enough for ten let alone twelve. Used wood fire once as it set the carbon monoxide alarm off in middle of the night, does the flue need sweeping? Cracked toilet seat and broken hinge on toilet. Broken curtain holder in lounge left on floor. We query how good is the cleaner, a note to say about these things would have made us realise they appreciate having people there and aware of the problems. The fridge had the wrong deep tray in so took that out and door problem solved. Owner did say he would get a roofer in and a new toilet fixed but didn't happen whilst we were there.

SOUTHERNESS

Castle Douglas 19 miles; Dalbeattie 13 miles; Dumfries 16 miles.

Southerness is a small coastal village established in the late 18th century, which looks out over the Solway Firth, and forms part of the Colvend coast, one of the finest stretches of coastline on the 'Scottish Riviera'. Home to three pubs, two village stores, a leisure centre with a pool at Parkdean and two miles of sandy beaches with sand dunes, rock pools and Gulf Stream warmed waters, and one of the oldest lighthouses in Scotland, built in 1748, it has everything you will need for a relaxing holiday. The nearby Criffel Hill rises to 569m, offers wonderful views of the farmland and the sands of the Nith Estuary below, and provides great walking opportunities. The Southerness Championship Golf Course adjoins the village and offers panoramic views of the Solway Firth, the Cumbrian Lake District to the south and the Galloway Hills to the west. A great location, with something to keep everybody occupied.
