“The Old Rectory totally exceeded our expectations!”

It is huge, beautifully renovated ...

It is huge, beautifully renovated and furnished to a very high standard. The beds and sofas are very comfortable, perfect for a spot of relaxation. The kitchen is packed with crockery and all the equipment you could ever need. The Old Rectory easily absorbed our party of 11, the 3 kids had plenty of space to play inside and out. It's in a beautiful secluded location, it was too wet for us to do much walking but there's plenty on the doorstep and it's only a 15 minute drive from the lovely Hay-on-Wye. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Old Rectory, it's perfect for a group getaway.

The property

The Old Rectory is a 19th Century former Parsonage set high in the Radnorshire hills with stunning views of the Black Mountains and the surrounding moors and farmland, an ideal base for family gatherings or celebrating special occasions.

The reception hall features a Victorian fireplace, exposed stonework and a fine staircase leading to the first floor.

A ground floor bedroom with king size bed and en-suite walk-in shower, basin and WC, is convenient for guests with reduced mobility.

A spacious sitting room boasts dual aspect windows and french doors overlooking the garden, a log burner and comfortable sofas and armchairs for everyone.

There is also a TV lounge with a bay window, a 55in Freesat TV and an electric fire.

The dining room, with log burner and a large oak table easily seating 12 persons for leisurely family feasts, is next to the well equipped farmhouse style kitchen.

With plenty of work surface, huge oven with five burner gas hob, a double oven, fridge freezer and a dishwasher, it is an ideal space for preparing delicious meals.

Adjacent is a utility/boot room with second dishwasher, washing machine and hanging space for drying outdoor clothes.

From here, a small sun room makes a sneaky retreat for a morning coffee, an afternoon cuppa or a late nightcap and is the *only* place indoors where smoking is allowed.

Painscastle is a delightful village with a friendly food pub, perfect to return to after exploring the engulfing countryside.

Within easy reach is the fabulous Hay-on-Wye, promising a memorable day trip with its quaint amenities and buildings.

This unspoilt area of the Welsh Marches with the Red Kite soaring overhead and wild ponies roaming the hillside is a haven for wildlife.

It offers excellent opportunities for walking, horse-riding, golf and water-sports; either on the doorstep or within easy reach and makes a centrally situated base for exploring the lakes and mountains of Mid-Wales and the Brecon Beacons National Park.

The Royal Welsh Showground and the book town of Hay-on-Wye, as well as being famous for the Agricultural Show and the Festival of Literature, also host many other notable events throughout the year.

Hereford city boasts an 11th century Cathedral with the Chained Library and the Mappa Mundi, which is certainly worth a visit during your stay.

There are a number of National Trust properties and characterful market towns in the area.

This idyllic location provides a wonderful variety of attractions to suit all ages and tastes.

About the location

Hay-on-Wye 5.5 miles; Builth Wells 12.5 miles; Hereford 25 miles.

The pretty village of Painscastle lies just five and a half miles from the famous town of Hay-on-Wye, and takes its name from its ancient fortress, where today only large earthworks remain. Standing only three miles from the England/Wales border, the village boasts a charming real ale inn serving good food, and is surrounded by scenic countryside. Under six miles away is the historic market town of Hay-on-Wye. Settled beside the River Wye, it’s renowned for its world-famous Hay Festival of Literature and with its many specialist bookshops, antiques shops, restaurants and cafes, it’s a popular destination for holidaymakers wishing to enjoy the leisure activities and beautiful scenery of the Wye Valley. Builth Wells can be reached within a pleasant drive, and is home to an 18-hole golf course, a pony trekking centre and a selection of amenities, plus each July it plays host to the Royal Welsh Show. The surrounding countryside provides excellent walking, cycling, bird watching, fishing and canoeing opportunities, amongst many more, together with a variety of tourist attractions, including the Black Mountains, The Three Castles Walk, Offa's Dyke pathway, the Mortimer Trail and the lovely walk to Hergest Ridge, which is said to have inspire the music of Elgar. The ancient city of Hereford, the epitome of picturesque England, lies just over half an hour’s drive away, with its magnificent cathedral housing its famous chained library and Mappa Mundi, and medieval bridge set over the winding River Wye. A supremely appealing area, and a perfect year-round holiday destination.
