From this delightful cottage door there are walks across the countryside and into the local forestry areas.

You are ideally placed to explore the fabulous Elan Valley, with various lakes punctuated with stunning Victorian architectural dams, creating the breathtaking, historic, landscapes of mid Wales.

Gilfach Nature Reserve offers the chance to walk through a variety of habitats with some fabulous wildlife watching.

Alternatively, just while away a few hours in the bustling town of Rhayader in one of its many coffee houses and eateries.

The area offers numerous outdoor activities, such as stargazing, horse riding, cycling, wildlife spotting and walking.

Slightly further afield, explore the imposing National Trust’s Powis Castle.

Alternatively, head to the east and you can explore the undulating countryside of the Shropshire Hills AONB.

An hour’s drive to the west and the wonderful coastline of Cardigan Bay stretches in both directions from Aberystwyth.

Rhayader is a small Welsh market town with a selection of tea rooms, pubs, restaurants, amenities and unique little boutiques, including local antiques. An added bonus of a leisure centre with a large swimming pool and a weekly livestock market. The Red Kite Feeding Station, on the outskirts of the town is a great attraction not to be missed. Rhayader is the first town on the River Wye and is home to the spectacular dams and reservoirs of the Elan and Claerwen Valleys. The Elan Valley offers a variety of walks and cycle trails (cycle hire is available in Rhayader), as well as a visitor’s centre with café and children's play area. This area is known as the Wildlife Centre of Wales, with its amazing variety of nature reserves open for visitors to enjoy. There is also pony trekking available in the area. Visit Builth Wells, where the Spring Festival, Royal Welsh Agricultural Show and Winter Fair are all held annually. Alternatively, a scenic drive will take you to the Welsh coast 34 miles away.
