  • "A lovely cottage that was very homely with a lot of the owners personal touches there."

Everything was very clear on how to use everything, I would personally like to thank the owner for the collection of books available- I have actually taken up yoga again as a result of their collection and bought one of the books myself ! A treat to have the castle so close and plenty of places to walk with dog, beautiful views and wildlife such as woodpeckers / hedgehogs / owls. Would highly recommend Clun and would definitely return.

Thank you for leaving your thoughtful review. I am very glad you derived so much value from your stay in multiple ways. Clun does have that magic power for sure. And you are always most welcome. Property Owner

  • "We loved Marigold Cottage."

And we loved Clun. A small village of 680 people but with two pubs, a village store with Post Office, ironmongers, gift and craft shops, two cafes, a mini tourist information and shop. Walks all around - wonderful countryside. The National Collection of Aeoniums if you're into horticulture. The cottage itself has everything you might want and we hardly used the central heating as, although the weather was wet and windy at times, the wood burning stove heats the whole cottage (although not great environmentally of course but just occasionally it's lovely to have). We cooked a lot and found everything we needed - the knives were sharp! Thoroughly recommend. Enjoy.

Thank you for your wonderful feedback. Happy new year! Property Owner

No welcome pack especially as it was Christmas. When we went to use the hob it wasn't working. So annoying as we had a Christmas dinner to cook and other meals. I didn't sleep with worry. Manager came on Christmas eve to provide us with a 2 burner hob. Electricity cut out twice . These things should have been checked before our arrival. It spoilt our winter break . We will not be returning

  • "Location great."

House fine for 2 adults. Basic amenities seemed very basic! Shower unusable except in the bath and no shower curtain. Very old and uncomfortable sofa in living room. Parking space described as ' ample' but actually small as car must be parked to avoid neighbour's garage.

Thank you for leaving your comments. Regarding the bathroom, it is a bath with a hand-held shower attachment as publicised and shown in the bathroom photo. Perhaps the sofa cushions were in need of a plump up. This has been noted and on future occasions, will be carefully monitored. The parking space is described on the website as 'roadside parking' . The reference to 'ample parking' is in the Welcome Pack and describes the wider area of the town itself. The space in front of the cottage is sufficient for any normal car (without a trailer). There is space further along next to the low wall if guests prefer. Clun is a medieval town and some of the meeting spaces and manoeuvrability can be tight. The parking space is as described perfectly adequate for any car, even a larger 4x4 which is what we drive & park there without issue. Nevertheless, we hope the parking did not detract too much from your wonderful-sounding holiday in Clun, a very special place. Property Owner

  • "This is a great base for a walking holiday."

Clun is a quiet and friendly place with good pub, cafe, shop, etc all just up the road and there is really nice walking from the door, including the Shropshire Way and on to Offa's Dyke. The cottage is comfortable, generously equipped and nicely furnished in traditional style with plenty of storage space. Our only complaint would be that the bathroom although it looked nice was not very user friendly.

Thank you for your constructive and helpful feedback. We will take steps to improve the bathroom. We are delighted that you were able to take full advantage of your experience staying at Marigold Cottage. It's a special place indeed. Property Owner

  • "Great location, and generally comfortable cottage."

Like other reviews would request coat hooks, especially as the joys of British weather mean they are often wet! 2 small criticisms - lack of a 'welcome pack' which is pretty standard in most holiday lets now. 2) Huge, but really poorly configured bathroom - you can only have a stand up shower if you are a Hobbit!!

Thank you for your comments. We are glad you found the cottage comfortable. By the way, coat hooks are on the wall behind the front door, above eye level. Welcome pack is in the black folder on the side by the bread oven. As described, the shower is hand-held, not overhead. Thanks again for taking the time to add your comments which have been noted. Stairs very slippy with Socks on, Runner down the middle would help. No Coat Hook anywhere for Wet Coats. Very over looked in Kitchen More at Night need Blind. Garden at front messy. The fence as no use Better without so parking is better, Restricts Car door opening with narrow Road.

Thank you for the high score. Coats hooks are behind the front door. We don't dress the kitchen window as the high wall at the back of the courtyard means there's no line of sight inside. Regarding the stairs, it's a wooden staircase & purposefully remains uncovered. Due care is indeed necessary on staircases. Passengers normally hop out before the driver's parked the car snugly in situ. The fence is a feature and there to protect the small garden. Your remarks have been noted. Once again, we are grateful for the score that you applied to describe your stay. Thank you. Property Owner

L.c down stair up stairs is Lovely very comfy bed needs lights in back yard and by front door dirty where your pans are a lot of cobs webs down stairs sorry needs a good clean down stairs when we arrived the back door was open sorry it is a lovely cottage just needs some care

We're glad you liked the cottage. Thank you for your helpful remarks. We will consider them carefully. Clun is an old medieval settlement, parts of Marigold Cottage are also old. The cottage originally was part of an old coach house inn.. Downstairs is old, built from ancient stone (some spiders do creep in when windows are left open for ventilation)! The cottage has a unique character and ambiance, and is loved by many. Often guests return again and again. In the winter months, the cottage is fairly exposed, but cosy inside. With regular changeovers sometimes things get overlooked. We do apologise for the oversight on this occasion. The corner cupboards in the kitchen are now clean and fresh again. The backdoor is often used by guests as it can be the preferred entrance to use. Clun typically is a safe low-crime area. The housekeepers had literally left the same day. Generally, of course, the back door is kept locked between bookings. We're confident that on a different occasion the impression would be different. Nevertheless, as mentioned, we have listened carefully to the comments and made amends accordingly. Thank you for leaving your review. Property Owner

The cottage is cosy and in a really nice little town with some good shops and pubs within walking distance. The countryside is beautiful and very quiet and unspoilt. The wood burner was great and the bed and sofa were comfortable. There are a couple of things that could have made it even nicer; we missed having a proper shower (the bath is under a sloping ceiling so you can't stand up in it) and there was a slightly musty smell when we first came in and also in some of the kitchen cupboards but this is a very old property so that may be hard to resolve. Great value for money though so we would come and stay again.

Thank you for your mainly positive comments. The situation of the shower in the bathroom is well-described on the Sykes website. My housekeeper has 'freshened up' the corner cupboards. Thank you for pointing out these observations. Kind regards, Charlotte Moir Owner Property Owner

The one in the cottage was also very difficult to turn on the hob "plates". Is this usual? It was also lovely to get home where we only have to turn off the kitchen taps not have to keep screwing them down to stop them dripping being older it was very difficult with our old wrists. Sorry if this sounds like a fussy complaint but we have never had these problems before in fairness most of the people in the guest book seemed very happy and said they would return.

Thank you for your helpful remarks. On the cooker and in the welcome pack, the grill is clearly labelled and the instructions to use the hob are easy to reference in the welcome pack. The taps in the kitchen do currently take a firm turn to close! We are looking into either re-servicing or replacing the existing kitchen tap. Thank you, Charlotte Moir Owner Property Owner

About the location

CLUN

Bishop's Castle 6 miles; Ludlow 18 miles.

A.E. Houseman's poem, A Shropshire Lad, defined Clun as 'the quietest place under the sun', and with its dramatic ruin of a Norman castle, Saxon church, the bustling river which flows under the 14th century pack horse bridge, and a country inn, Clun is a rural gem situated in the South Shropshire Hills. It lies on the Shropshire Way in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty close to the border of Wales, an area known as The Marches. This unspoilt part of Britain has an abundance of wildlife and beautiful unhindered walking and cycling routes winding their way through the countryside with the Clun and Kerry Forests, Offa's Dyke, and Kerry Ridgeway all close by. There are a wide range of festivals and shows on offer in the surrounding area throughout the year, including The Green Man festival in May. From Clun, you can also enjoy exploring the historic towns of Bishop's Castle, Presteigne, Ludlow, Shrewsbury, and Hereford, a must for visitors.
