However, our stay was marred by small things which can easily be resolved for future guests.... The overall cleanliness was not great. There was half opened packets of food in the cupboards and somebody had written ’filthy’ into the dirt on top of the hood of the hob and the oven was very dirty and greasy. The fridge was way too small for ten guests and there were no oven gloves, tea towels or bin bags. Only later did we see Sykes policy on oven gloves, though we could see there were oven gloves in the other cottage! The TV was awful to manage. No aerial for terrestrial television to get local weather and news and no live ITV (which some of us wanted for the England game). We could only access BBC live through iPlayer which was logged in by a previous guest ‘Millie Baldwin’! The TV could not be switched off, we had to pull the plug at the back of the unit! There were problems with the toilet flush mechanisms and one of the toilets had a seat which simply did not fit. Finally, there was a pool table with just one cue which had no tip. Oh, and the photos could also do with updating. Other than that, it was great :)

About the location

MONTGOMERY

Churchstoke 4.5 miles; Bishop's Castle 9.5 miles; Welshpool 5.8 miles

The town of Montgomery sits just one mile from the border of England in Mid Wales. Popular with tourists, the town has a delightful selection of individual shops and a variety of pubs and restaurants, including the Michelin star restaurant, The Checkers, a fabulous way to make your holiday truly special. Pay a visit to the ruins of the 13th century Montgomery Castle, which enjoys beautiful views over the town’s timber-framed houses and cobbled streets, and beyond across Wales. The castle also hosts productions of touring theatre groups regularly during the summer. A few miles to the south is the historic market town of Bishop's Castle, an excellent place for a day or night out with its excellent pubs, live music and festivals throughout the year. The wider area is wonderful for walking and there are many cycle routes in the surrounding countryside with varying levels of difficulty. You can venture further into Wales with a drive up to the Snowdonia National Park, or directly west to Cardigan Bay, for the day, or hop back over the border and explore the Shropshire Hills AONB. A charming destination for a holiday.
