Beautiful little cottage which was comfortable and spotlessly clean. Everything we needed was there and the owner was very responsive and helpful if we had any questions. Brilliant hot tub, cosy log burner, powerful shower and comfy bed. Looking forward to visiting again!

  • "Our Christmas getaway was perfect, the cottage is cosy and comfortable with everything you need."

Peaceful location with lots of natural beauty to explore. The hot tube was delightful always at the perfect temperature. Our two Dalmatians felt very at home in front of the log burner, the garden was just what was needed (safe and secure). Local supermarkets only 20mins drive away to stock up on supplies. Will can’t wait to make a return visit! Would definitely recommend a stay here to recharge your batteries.

  • "It is lovely, old cottage (with Baptist church behind the wall), with thick stone walls, crackling floors, and a smell of dry wood."

The house was clean and cosy. We've found the bed very comfortable. The wi-fi signal was very good around all property. It was great to relax in the hot tub at the evening. The garden is fully enclosed, so our 2 medium/large dogs had plenty of space to play, and we felt safe that they wouldn't run away. Local people were very friendly. There are nice places for shorter walks along Llaethdy Brook and on steep, opposite slope of the valley, with stunning views from the top. The nearest shop and petrol station (the only one in the neighbourhood) is about 10 minutes away by car. We fully recommend this house for people, who like quiet, countryside holidays.

Comfortable beds and sitting room. If you enjoy hot tubs you will love this one. Having stayed at many Sykes cottages we were rather disappointed with the quality of the property. It could be lovely but needs some TLC, especially the bathroom. If dogs are allowed the fencing at the top section of the garden needs to be more secure, our cocker would be able to get out. Garden chairs need some improving and the BBQ has seen better days.

Hi Mike, thanks for your feedback, the bathroom is undergoing a makeover now it’s Autumn and the garden chairs and BBQ will be replaced with new ones, they just don’t make these things to last like they used to Property Owner

It was absolutely beautiful. The cottage looks so much nicer with the sofas that have been replaced since the listing pictures were taken. The location is perfect, there is a lovely little dog walk nearby and the neighbours were all really lovely. If we had to be critical, the only improvement that could be made would be to the bathroom (grout between tiles) and the window frames (which are beautiful but rotting) We stayed during a heatwave but we can imagine the cottage would be wonderful in winter too.

Clear instructions were given for directions and property use. Lots of leaflets available in the property for local activities! A lovely town near by which had plenty of shops and pubs to enjoy! There were a few flies that lingered however this can be expected as it is in the countryside and near some farm animals. Property owner also ensured there was fly traps in place to reduce this which helped a lot. Would definitely recommend for a nice getaway! We will be returning!

couldn't work out how to use tv as no instructions.looked at hot tub was realy hot ,couldn't get in if i wanted too .And unfortunately was infested with hundreds of flies up and down stairs even with the doors shut ,only stayed over night.came home early next morning. so for us we did not class this as value for money.

Hi Janet, thanks for your feedback, I assure you all can be explained. We have recently fully redecorated the cottage and also replaced the sofas with new stylish fabric ones. We love them and have had great back feedback from guests so far. Apologies though, we are awaiting a photographer to update images of the new colour schemes onto the website. The welcome pack with full instructions was indeed on the kitchen table as you entered the cottage. This includes instructions for the appliances. Though most are pretty straightforward, including the TV, which is a modern smart TV with Freesat, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and most other streaming channels. The Hot Tub is recently brand-new and is set at 38°, which is standard, but can be reduced as well. The garden area is not unkempt, I mow it myself (as I did prior to your arrival). I purposely left the far corner to grow out as it contains sown wildflowers for the birds and butterflies and also it’s a lovely place to sit amongst the colours and beauty of nature. Upon your notice of departure, I entered the cottage to check on the flies, and I found two that I removed immediately. I can only apologise, as you stated, if your dog was traumatised by those flies. Kindest regards, James. Rach and the boys x Property Owner

Nice and quiet. Perfect for walks straight from the cottage. We stumbled across one which takes you over the hills with views for miles right off the doorstep! Lots of wildlife, we've never seen so many Kites! We all loved the hot tub and kids and dog loved the garden. This is one for dog owners who need an actual enclosed garden for whatever reason - we have been on many holidays which says they have an 'enclosed garden' and didn't. This one does. For once our dog pottered freely! Great family holiday.

This wee beauty cottage really was perfect. Warm, cosy, well equipped with an AMAZING hot tub. Mega powerful jets with lots of hydro massage options. Truly wonderful! That’s just the hot tub! The cottage was a real step back in time and perfectly cosy. The area is also remarkable with great sights to see such as amazing waterfalls, Damns and reservoirs / I think this area is my new fave place in wales. We thought it was a bit of a trek from where we live but we was ignorant as the drive into wales through the hills and valleys is stunning and part of the trip! This now tops Devon and Cornwall by a long shot on the beauty scale! The owners are also lovely people and very accommodating should you need anything but also they are not to be seen so you have total privacy

  • "Preacher’s Cottage has a similar atmosphere to the cottage in the film “The Holiday” – same sort of cosy little old cottage with thick walls in a really quiet area – just what we wanted for Christmas."

Lovely walks from the doorstep, then back for brunch where we chattered together in the kitchen while preparing meals, then chilled in the secluded hot tub – be it in rain or sleet – it was warm. Lovely cosy lounge with a wood burner, gloriously hot shower with instantaneous very hot water, and stunning view from the bedroom window where I could just sit and stare out at the surrounding area. In fact, everything about Preacher’s Cottage is “warm”. Most importantly, we encountered a problem on the first night, spoke to James in the morning and despite it being two days before Christmas and requiring a lot of time and effort, James sorted it the very same day – certainly made us feel that he cared about our comfort. Thank you James and family.

  • "This is our second visit to the cottage this year, first trip in June for a quiet weekend to celebrate a birthday and this time for a full week to enjoy a festive family retreat tucked away in the Valleys!"

On arrival the cottage was spotless, lovely and warm & the fire had been lit with plenty of additional fire wood and everything you would need to attend to the fire - extra wood also available in the shed if needed. Lovely walks on the doorstep with the dog and perfect for tiring out our busy 3 year old with scenic river walks and farm animals to spot along the way. Despite the -2 weather the cottage was toasty our entire stay and views were utterly picturesque coated in a layer of frost early mornings. We made some really special Christmas memories this week, with a scenic drive out to Aberystwyth for a frosty walk on the beach and a festive visit to Powis Castle to enjoy the magic under the twinkle of the lights, roaming reindeer and mulled wine in the courtyard - both places were really easy to get to from the cottage but what a treat it was to return to the log fire, put a film on and enjoy giant hot chocolates tucked away from the world! As far as the facilities go there was nothing we were short of, a really comfortable stay if you embrace the cottage and all it has to give. The owners, like our last visit were really helpful and went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed and feel really approachable if you do need anything at all. There's no doubt about it this lovely little cottage has stolen a place in our hearts and is our perfect retreat away from the busy way of life we are used to in the Midlands.

  • "We booked for 7 nights and stayed only one."

We would have left on the day of arrival if we could have. The cottage did not meet our expectations and requires maintenance in several areas. We found it too uncomfortable with too many issues to enjoy a holiday there It was cold upon arrival with the windows wide open. There were no instructions on how to operate the heating which I ‘best guessed’. All the radiators had been set to 0. No wood starter pack was left and the fireside basket empty. I had brought my own wood and kindling and set a fire. The wood burner is in serious need of attention. It vents poorly and creates thick acrid smoke that fills the cottage when you open the door to add wood. There was no safety glove. I noticed the glass was already heavily sooted indicating poor efficiency and maybe issues with the flue??? It was not safe. The TV did not work and no channels were available. The owner offered his Netflix account as a means to have something to watch. The shower controls were stiff and my wife could not work them - once I got water flowing, it gathered in the bottom of the bath as the drain struggled to cope and to shower, you had to stand in dirty water. The lights flickered and came on and off randomly in the living room. I suspect that the cottage has had no visitors for a time before our arrival and had been mothballed - a full check should have taken place to ensure it was warm, comfortable and welcoming prior to our arrival. We left the following morning, we couldn’t stay with so many issues obviously going to effect our comfort and enjoyment. It was frustrating as the break was to celebrate a birthday and was very much anticipated. This was our first negative experience so we are not ‘serial complainers’ The cottage needs maintenance and some TLC. All the issues would have been obvious had a comfort check taken place prior to letting. Some positives were that the property was clean to an acceptable standard. The hot tub was nice and warm.

Hi David, Thanks for your feedback. Please scroll through 6 years of positive feedback to check how passionately our young family embraces accommodating families into our loving cottage and the local area. You will be pleased to know we have taken on board all comments and have replaced the shower with a complete new shower unit and also a complete new toilet unit also. The log fire has been checked over and is fine. Had you let me known an ETA I would’ve lit the fire as normal to warmly welcome you. It appears on your attempt you closed the vent which explains the smoke escaping. The central heating is controlled by the normal, simple thermostat in the kitchen as stated in the instructions provided. The TV was remedied on my arrival in morning as a few leaves had landed on the dish, though I did give you my personal Netflix account details which you enjoyed in the meantime. Upon inspection no lights flicker and our electrician has confirmed this. Over 6 years our homely cottage has enjoyed welcoming an average of bookings over 47 weeks a year and many lifetime friends made as we love to welcome guests personally. I feel this review would have been avoided if you’d arrived earlier than the 8.30 pm when I couldn’t welcome you in person as our young family require our late weekend evenings at home, just a few miles away. In the morning, I was saddened by your message of your departure, but as you left me a positive reason for leaving, I understood the situation. However, this later negative review saddens us and we would love to welcome you back as a way of showing you what we are capable of. PS. We have also replaced the Hot Tub and invested over £12k to ensure our homely cottage welcomes guests not perturbed by one’s negative spin. The steps down to the cottage were very slippery and covered in leaves, we slipped several times between us all. May be a handrail would improve the situation. Also may be some lights around the hot tub would be useful for the autumn/winter months because you couldn’t use it after dark. We were also disappointed about the check out time of 9am, we only found this out when we had arrived, It’s states on the Skye’s cottages website 3pm check in and 10am check out. Apart from that we had a great time and would definitely stay again. X

  • "The location is really wonderful and rural but easily accessed and not too far from Newtown for supplies."

The garden is fully enclosed for children and pets and is a little sun trap-we ate outside nearly every morning! All you can hear are the bees, birds and sheep-heaven! There is internet connection but no phone signal which was fine as we have whatsapp. The cottage is quaint and although dark inside, the owner has put plenty of lights in so it wasn't an issue reading etc. The kitchen was well equipped and the bathroom shower pressure was amazing! The hot tub was wonderful, especially after walking all day. The bathroom could do with a brighter light bulb and the light shade in the main bedroom could do with being flush with the ceiling but they were minor details. The Powys area is beautiful and unspoiled-I can definitely recommend a visit to Elan Valley and to Hafod for walks - our 2 Labradors had a fab time!

the garden is enclosed on a split level which our dachshund loved. the house is comfortable with very comfy beds and clean bedding. the hot tub is spacious and the temperature is always on point. it was without a doubt a fantastic break away for us, made even better by Hames the owner who came to greet us personally, he is also very knowledgeable about the area and can point you in the right direction. once again thank you James and family for the wonderful break from Nuno, Paula and Balthazar the dachshund. we will see you soon again.

Comfortable enough and the owners have maximised the space. Wood burning stove good experience; CH and hot water immediately available. Well lit throughout. Plumbing a minor problem - slow drainage but that's to do with the location and the owner did point it out. Quaint little hamlet with friendly locals - including the inquisitive cat which were warned about. Very relaxing. The hot tub looked inviting. Ideal place to relax for a couple or perhaps a couple with young children. Sky broadband was a bonus - also meant I could use an app for some phone calls - no mobile signal .... but if you went up to the top of the drive it suddenly improved. Does the place need anything extra? A lift perhaps

James and Rachel are the most amazing hosts and left so many thoughtful extras for us upon our arrival. They were so accommodating and made sure we had everything we needed to have a wonderful Christmas in this beautiful cottage. The cottage is so clean and well equipped and felt like home for a week. It was amazing to wake up to the beautiful views that Preachers Cottage boasts and there are so many beautiful areas to explore locally. The hot tub is absolutely wonderful and we spent many hours there listening to the birds or looking at the stars and the fact that it is covered means it can be enjoyed in any weather. This was the only issue we had with sykes. The booking process was quick and easy. The cottage was beautiful. Even nicer than the photographs. Every little thing had been thoughtfully considered by the owners and there were sweet little surprises too, such as fresh flowers in every room, toys, books, games, dvds, nuts for toasting on the fire, logs, cider, Welsh cakes and milk on arrival. The locals were really friendly and let us feed the farm animals, walk their beautiful sheep dog and gave us fresh eggs too. The hot tub is not overlooked at all and so lovely to relax in after walking days out. We'd highly recommend a stay in this cosy little cottage. The owners were really friendly and helpful and obviously take a lot of pride in their holiday cottage and making people feel welcome. Dog friendly garden too and swing ball for the kids in the enclosed garden with sun loungers for the adults. Would recommend a visit to devil's bridge and elan valley and the walk alongside the stream right by the cottage.

Truly ‘off grid’ (on a winding country lane, without wifi or signal) you can leave the world behind you and avoid any distractions. My husband and I spent the week watching films and reading books by the fire in between walking the dogs and relaxing in the hot tub. James and Rachel were excellent hosts and we were especially impressed with how well the hot tub was maintained - it was regularly checked and treated. There are short walks on the door step to walk your dogs and plenty of beautiful places to visit nearby if you feel like venturing out, but equally it’s the perfect place to simply enjoy doing very little - perfectly tranquil and well equipped plus excellent value for money. We’d definitely reccomend taking a visit!

The owner was very friendly and helpful, plus it was nice to get to know him and his family when he visited to check on the hot tub (note: he ensures the hot tub water stays in best condition by regularly popping in to check it, but he is only there a minute or two and does not disturb residents at all). The cottage is well kept with everything you need. Great location for walkers with a nearby Forest and stream walk just a minutes walk away. Large hot tub is great for relaxing in the evening listening to the wildlife and looking at the stars at it gets dark. We generally do a 'Hot Tub' break around January/February time of year, and take the dog too, to get in some nice walks but at the same time relax. It was nice to be 'Off Grid'...there was enough selection of DVDs to watch, if that's what you wanted. It was cosy with the log burner and at £5.00 a bag in the honesty box was a nice touch. There was plenty to do places to visit, but If walking is your thing, then you are spoilt for choice. Star gazing in this area was magnificent so many too see as no light pollution. All in all 10/10 for the Cottage and all it's features.

The hot tub was very well maintained, clean and spacious. It snowed while we were there, the views from the cottage and the hot tub were beautiful. The owners are very friendly and gave us good tips of the best places to visit, such as the Elan Lakes; I would definitely recommend this as place to visit and there are lots of interesting places on the border and on Glyndwr's Way.
