Upon our arrival late in the afternoon on a cold winter's day, we were greeted by a toasty warm cottage which looked so welcoming and snug in the lamplight. We immediately noticed sanitising equipment like hand gel, antibacterial wipes and spray, which were reassuring to see. The owners very kindly left us a delicious tea cake, milk and some chocolate, all of which were greatly appreciated. The cottage was clean and looked just like the photos in the advert. The downstairs area was open plan and spacious, which made it perfect for our gathering of four adults and one child as we could all still see each other and chit chat while the members of our group were doing different things like cooking, sitting at the dining table, or lounging on the very comfortable sofas which were brand new. The beds were comfortable and the bedlinen was crisp, fresh and smelled lovely. The kitchen had teabags, sugar and coffee sachets as well as most of the equipment and gadgets we needed for our stay (but we could have done with a rolling pin). The TV was a smart TV with viewing options like Netflix, Prime Video, etc. Having said the above, we have some suggestions which we hope will help the owners improve the experience for future guests even more: 1. Step: There is a step in the living area which takes you up from the level the sofas are on to where the TV stand is, as well as the door leading to the bedroom upstairs. This step is unmarked, and, although shallow, it can cause people to trip while heading towards the bedroom door, or lose their footing when coming down into the living area. It is visible in the photos on the cottage advert but if you arrive while it is dark (like we did), it can be hazardous. Very shortly after arriving at the cottage, our child lost his footing as he didn't see the step, fell down into the living area and just missed knocking his head against the coffee table. Luckily our child is only three years old because if he was older and therefore taller, his head would not have missed the table. One of the adults who arrived later the same evening and missed seeing our child fall over, also lost her footing and almost fell as she did not notice the step either. For health and safety reasons, it would be good to have some sort of marking along the edge of the step to mark the change in floor level. Maybe floor tape of a colour which is still sympathetic to the surrounding decor of the cottage might be an option as it wouldn't ruin the 'look' of the room but could still help prevent people from injuring themselves. Another option is LED strip lighting which is inexpensive and also looks great. It is worth saying that after we experienced these two incidents shortly after our arrival because of this unmarked step, we were all hyper aware of it and were very careful for the rest of the stay, so there were no more accidents. However, we were lucky that the first incidents were not more serious such as a sprained ankle or a knocked head on the stone floor or against the wooden coffee table as these could have negatively affected the rest of our getaway. 2. Chandelier bulbs: The bulbs in both chandeliers (over the living and dining areas) are a mixture of mostly cool white, one or two warm white and a couple of bulbs that aren't working at all. This is also the case with one of the wall lights behind the dining table which has one warm white and one cool white bulb. Unfortunately this really spoilt the look of the main room of the cottage once it got dark. The cottage is beautifully furnished in a rustic style and the warm white lights in all the other areas of the cottage perfectly complement the look that the owner was going for. Unfortunately the mismatched cool white lights and dead bulbs, looked careless and lacked the loving attention to detail which was so obvious everywhere else. Being the main lights in the largest part of the cottage, they looked harsh, clinical, and were hard to ignore, so we often resorted to keeping them off and walking around in the semi-darkness which was only lit by the surrounding warmer lights from the kitchen and freestanding lamps, and only turning on the overhead lights when we had no other choice such as at evening mealtimes so as to see our food. 3. Remote control: The TV remote control was very unresponsive for the entire duration of our stay and caused a fair bit of frustration for various members of our group when each of us took turns to try and navigate to something to watch on Netflix and Prime Video. It would be worth the owner checking whether it is simply a case of the remote needing new batteries, or, if indeed the remote itself needs to be replaced. 4. Ensuite toilet: The toilet in the ensuite connected to the double bedroom is not level and unfortunately the tilt is very noticeable and somewhat uncomfortable when sitting on it (it is higher on the left side and slopes downward to the right). This might be something the owners could consider rectifying if they plan to re-fit the ensuite in the future. The ensuite also seems a bit tired when compared to the rest of the cottage. The above suggestions are detailed but these are not intended to be critical; instead, the intention is to help the owners make their lovely place even more perfect (and safe, in the case of the first suggestion), especially since three of the four points are fairly quick and cheap fixes. Overall, I would recommend the cottage as it suited us well and we are glad that we chose to stay there.

The photo doesn’t show the row of houses behind the house, or the fact that it is on the corner of a busy road, so, there is constant traffic noise. The only bit of ‘garden’ is the tarmac out the front. Given that, and it is on the road, it wasn’t a nice place to sit. The dogs didn’t much like that either. Lovely cottage if you don’t want a garden, and don’t mind keeping the windows closed! It was extremely hot when we went and I was also very glad to have bought my own fans, though, the stone walls of the cottage did help keep things cooler.

About the location

LLANGYNOG

Bala 13 miles.

The pleasant village of Llangynog lies in breathtaking countryside amidst the beautiful Berwyn Mountains and surrounding wooded hills and valleys. The area has a history of lead, silver and slate mining dating back to the 17th Century but today it is a renowned location for climbing, birdwatching, walking and cycling, with famous mountain bike trails near Dolgellau, and a mountain bike centre at Llandegla. The village boasts two pubs, both of which serve good food and are perfect to relax in after an exciting day out. Enjoy Lake Bala, a wonderful beauty spot, with excellent fishing, a variety of water sports including white water rafting and a lakeside steam railway, or visit Lake Vyrnwy, which has a RSPB centre, bike hire and a sculpture park. Also within easy reach is Llanrhaeadr Waterfall, the tallest single drop waterfall in England and Wales. This is a beautiful part of the country and is perfect for touring the rest of North and Mid Wales and even Shropshire.
