  • "Zero complaints about the place and will definitely be on our shortlist for when we have long weekends as a large group."

The place was absolutely perfect for a large contingent of people. Myself and 14 of my friends had an absolutely great time. Gamesroom is perfectly sized for a large group of people, lounge was a bit of a squeeze but it was fine given we had a nice rug and a fire in front of us. Location was easy enough to find, we used a sat-nav but do ensure that you have paper directions as well. We tempered expectations with Heating/water pressure/WiFi given the location was quite rural, but we were pleasantly surprised that none of these were an issue at all, especially given the size of the booking. Kitchen was well equipped that I was comfortably able to cook for the 15 strong party. I would advise bringing your own knives though as I found the kitchen knives a tad blunt but that’s really a non-issue for a couple of days. Rooms were lovely. There is a single bedroom within the master bedroom, so it’s more like 7 bedrooms than 6, which is big positive for a mixed group of people. Also, watch your head

  • "It was miserably cold!"

There’s no hot water and heating! The owner Caroline was helpful, but there was only so much she could do when the heating system was inadequate for the farmhouse. Everything else was fine - The farmhouse has been carefully designed, beautiful views and well equipped.

Thank you for your comment about our farmhouse, but I have to disagree with you that it was cold. The central heating was on 80% of the time during your stay, even during the night, we noticed you had left windows open by the time you vacated, because of the heat. We do hope you understand that with older properties you have to heat it in several different ways. We showed you how to use the Rayburn (and lit it for you) several times, for additional heat in the kitchen, but you chose not to use it. The kitchen is the old stable end of the character property so with stone walls, using the Rayburn (for additional heat) is necessary when we have icy weather outside. You also chose not to use the log burner in the lounge. Regarding the hot water, we explained that the hot tap in Bedroom 5 needs to be kept switched off correctly, because there is a pump for the hot water on that one tap. Unfortunately you left this on and you drained all of the hot water. Therefore, when you contacted me I had to explain that you now needed to put on the switch for the whole hot water system to heat up again. We are sorry you felt disappointed, but none of my previous guests have had any issues with Pengwern in the way you mention above. Regards. Property Owner

). Master bedroom is huge (almost too big, though missing hanging space), and the other rooms are a decent size. Lovely kitchen and living room - a bit cool when we arrived and took a day to warm up, but toast by the time we left, and the fire & Rayburn made for good evenings with ‘natural’ heat. Great place for a group, especially as 3 of the beds are zip and link - so hard to find a big property that doesn’t have a load of doubles, pointless for a group that’s majority singles (or half of a couple) on the trip. Good location for walking as well. Thanks for a great stay/birthday!

  • "This is a lovely old farmhouse and a wonderful find."

The photos do not do justice to how amazing the setting and views are. It is just you and the owner's cottage, and stunning views across the valley - you can see another cottage across the other side of the valley, but otherwise it is just fields, trees and sheep. Top marks to Caroline as a host - extremely helpful both before and during the visit. Her cottage is also set back behind the house about 100yds away on the side you don't really use (behind the main photo), so absolutely not instrusive in any way. There is no phone signal, but super fast broadband and a wifi mesh throughout the house, so you can use wifi calling if you really do want to still get those work phone calls. There is so much room as well. A huge snooker room and bar, a 1st floor Pool table and wii games room, a living room with comfy sofas and fireplace, a spare dining room for those table-top board games (or just extra serving space outside the kitchen), and then a large outside patio to take in the amazing view. The master bedroom / family suite is HUGE. Walks from the doorstep. ASDA deliver there. Bala about 30mins away. Loads of parking. We were a three generational family get together of 13 and the place was ideal - we will be back.

Caroline was a fantastic host, always on hand to answer any questions we may have had or to help with any requests. We were a party of 13 ranging from 18 months to 42 with their being 6 adults, 5 teenagers and 2 babies. The cottage provided enough space and facilities for us all to have a great time. The only slightly disappointing thing was that Caroline explained when we arrived that the pool table had been damaged by the previous family and as a result the felt was badly ripped in various places so was unusable. This didn't sit too well with the teenagers but thankfully the snooker table was on hand to make up for this. The cottage is huge and provides more than enough space for large groups. The bedrooms were great and everybody had their own space. The outdoor space was also great with plenty of room to sit out and enjoy the sun sets over the valley, play table tennis, use the rope swing or star gaze, which provides amazing views of the night sky. The cottage is conveniently placed for a number of activities. If you like mountain biking there is a downhill bike part literally just down the road/next to the cottage. Lots of great walks and runs direct from the door. Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake) provides a wide range of activities and water sports such as kayaking, paddle boarding etc and we had a great day here. Also about an hour away is a great beach at Barmouth. But equally you could easily spend a week in the cottage and not have to leave. There are small local shops in the two neighboring villages and bigger stores in Bala which is around 13 miles away. The village also has a couple of pubs which also serve food. All in all a fantastic week in a great cottage with a wonderful host. Would definitely recommend Pengwern cottage.

Our showers have been checked and are all working correctly and do have good water pressure. It may have been that two people flushed other toilets while you were in the main bathroom shower, this is the only shower that sometimes gets affected when this happens. Our pool table is working correctly, if the push in device to get the balls is pushed too hard then the balls can end up at the back of the table. I think this happened in your case. The table tennis table was in very good working order before your stay, the table net was broken off during your stay. We have now repaired this. Our internet/wifi is working without interruption and the best we have in this area. We travelled as a party of 13 - (9 adults, 4 children) Pengwern is a fantastic home from home and Caroline (the owner) has made sure guests can enjoy & discover the house and the surrounding area with ease & comfort. The secure bike store, boot room & drying room ensure you can experience the great outdoors and all your clothing, footwear and equipment is safe, dry and accessible. The snooker room/bar area became a daily activity to look forward to after long days of exploring/walking and sight seeing and apart from going to the local put to watch the football on BT Sports we really wouldn't have had to leave the comfort of the house after our days out. It has everything you need. Great music collection (to suit all tastes, loads of DVD's to watch and a lovely patio area to sit out in to enjoy the sights & sounds of the stunning surroundings. The games room for the children has everything your children could wish for (their own space) being one of them - our children had hours of fun in there and it's a brilliant addition to a magnificent country home. There are detailed walks/bike rides in a folder in the house which were really useful and the owner has taken time & consideration in making these as informative as possible. The area itself is just stunning - lots of walks & bike rides from the house, sheep/lamps outside your front door and a wood and mini mountain to climb right on your doorstep, no need to take the car out (unless you run out of supplies) so as long as you plan ahead you really can escape the hustle & bustle of everyday life. We arranged for an online shop from Asda to deliver our shopping which was extremely useful as the nearest supermarket is in Oswestry which is quite a distance away from Pengwern. The kitchen/cooking facilities have everything you need and there is lots of space around the two tables to accommodate multiple guests at meal times. We will definitely be returning - we had the best time and from several houses we've stayed at previously - Pengwern ticked all the boxes :)

We had at least 10 great cottages to choose from which ticked all the boxes. I can honestly say we made the best decision, this cottage exceeded our expectations more than we could of imagined, 4 families all under one roof and everyone had their own preference on where to be, kids in the pool/games room adults in the snooker room sitting around the mini bar and some enjoying a quiet movie around the log burner in the lounge. Caroline was so very helpful, even weeks before we stayed at the cottage Caroline had given me heaps of information regarding biking trails in the area. Which literally started from the doorstep. The kids are crazy about wildlife, so for them to able to sit out on the tree swing amongst the sheep meant the were out there rain or shine in their element! I personally have never missed a place so much once being back home, really was a dream lifestyle come true! If I could do anything different next time, it would be to pack less clothes because we had no need to leave the cottage! All the families will be returning next year.

  • "This fantabulous cottage has amazing views of the valley."

Ideal location to spend with large group of friends/families. Kids loved the games room and collection of books. Quite near to "Bala Lake" or "Pistyll Rhaeadr" waterfall. Will defnitely think of coming again in summer. This was one trip which will stay in our memories for very long. Thanks to the lovely owner for very well maintained warm & cosy cottage.
