  • "I agree with previous reviews that Penlone cottage was a comfortable cottage in a tranquil setting."

There are a few things that need attention that would have improved our experience and resulted in a higher rating Firstly the cottage is for 4 people and yet there were only 2 cups and saucers (yes there were ample mugs), only 3 wine glasses and a mismatch of other glasses and unusually there were no egg cups. Even though a dish brush was provided there was no dishcloth for wiping down surfaces in the kitchen, this has always been provided in previous Sykes cottages. The lane directly opposite the cottage provides an easy, safe 5 minute walk to the main road where visitors to the cottage can pick up the walk to Rhayader or the Elan Valley. It would have been useful to have had this information provided, I have left a hand drawn map in the information folder at the cottage as we couldn't find anything similar in the information provided. We had an enjoyable week in the cottage and loved the new experience of using a rayburn oven for cooking, the daily walks to either Rhayader or the Elan Valley were thoroughly enjoyed as was also the exploration and walks around the reservoirs. On a final note, I was surprised to see two very large shaggy rugs covering the carpet in the lounge and dining room. As the only effective way of cleaning these is by lifting and shaking I am not sure how practical they are, they kept ridging and it was difficult to keep them flat.

  • "We have just had a fantastic holiday in the most beautiful cottage with excellent facilities."

The shower was very good, which can sometimes be a problem. Every utensil you could possibly need was there. Everything was spotless. The beds were extremely comfortable. We loved the summerhouse and used it every day. The many species of birds we saw in the garden was incredible. We saw lots of red kites from the summerhouse. It isn't far to the town, where we ate out quite a few days. They were dog friendly. The scenery is stunning with lots of different walks. We would definitely like to return.

  • "Be aware of the road leading to the property as it is one lane and little opportunity to pass an oncoming vehicle."

The summer house is a great place to relax and enjoy the surrounding countryside. The phone signal is troublesome but no worse than in a lot of areas in Wales. Keep an eye out for the red kites. Gigrin Farm is only five minutes away and worth prebooking. The garden has wrens and they are amazing to see. All in all a great place to stay.

  • "Cottage is good ."

.. very comfortable, good shower & bath, nice garden and summerhouse, useful garage for bikes, etc. Well equipped though my wife cannot get on with the Rayburn, too slow and not controllable enough. The microwave and George Foreman grill more than compensated for this. Didn't want the TV much but it had Netflix and Amazon Prime (not Sky as mentioned in the instructions). The internet was okay much of the time for emails and general use but it did fluctuate, particularly in the evenings when the speed could drop below 1 mbps which took Netflix and Amazon Prime 'off the menu'. We were fortunate with the weather so plenty of long walks and cycle rides.

  • "Lovely comfortable cottage in an area of beautiful country side ,lovely walk to nearby town ."

We enjoyed walking and bird watching in the nearby woods and Elan valley ,the area is abundant with Red kites, Pied fly catchers, Red starts ,and many more birds. We will definitely return to Penlone cottage as one week was not enough to explore this beautiful area .

  • "As bird watching enthusiasts, we booked Penlone Cottage for 7 nights so that we could see the Red Kite and visit all of the local nature reserves, of which there are many!"

We arrived at the cottage and were delighted that it was nestled in a valley right next to where all of the Red Kite roost in the evenings, we could not have wished for a better location for our hobby, it is peaceful, the scenery is beautiful and the cottage has everything you could need for a relaxing break, the coal fire in the evenings was so cosy it set us up for a good nights sleep ready for the next day. The cottage itself is very well maintained with a gazebo/conservatory at the top of the garden which overlooks the field where the Kite roost. You can get a lovely full english breakfast at The Old Swan Tea Rooms in Rhayader which is only a 10 minute drive away. We enjoyed our holiday and this cottage/location so much that we are already planning to go back next year, this is by far the best Sykes Cottage that we have rented.

But no CD player as stated and the radio did not work. The Rayburn cooker was difficult to understand and would not turn off.

Thank you for your comments, we are happy to hear you found the property to be comfortable. We have checked our advertisement and we do not include CD player or Radio within the description. We will ask for the Radio to be removed if this is not working. In relation to the Rayburn, we are sorry to hear you found it difficult and we will make sure there are instructions provided for future guests. The property does also include Steamer, Microwave & Gas Hob. We do ask guests to contact ourselves or owner if you are having any issues during your stay. We appreciate your comments and hope you return in the future. Property Owner

It would have been good to have an oven and grill! There was also no mention when to put the bin out which we would have done. But the cottage was very clean and comfortable plenty of bird life and walks,

  • "Beautiful cottage, well equipped with a lovely garden."

Very close to Rhayader yet in peaceful countryside with red kites flying overhead. The gorgeous Elan Valley is 5 minutes down the road with many stunning walks. We have had a brilliant holiday and would well recommend.

The bed (super king) or queen as it is better known, was brilliant. The garden, Gazebo, and the way it was enclosed for dogs was fantastic. The accommodation was excellent, it just needs a vacuum and some other cleaning facilities to be present for those of us that like to keep on top of things.

Thank you for your feedback, there is a vacuum cleaner which is kept in the cupboard under the stairs. Although it is a self catering property there is a small selection of cleaning items kept in the usual place underneath the sink. Property Owner

  • "This is a pretty character cottage in a nice & quiet location."

There are lovely touches such as soft & large sofa & bed throws, comfy scatter cushions and lots of floor & table lamps, all giving the cottage a homely feel. The furniture is nice & comfortable too, including the bed. The shower upstairs is the nicest one (pressure & water temperature control) I have used on a cottage holiday or even in a five star hotel; most unexpected & much appreciated. It is possible to make several different walks directly from the cottage. Depending upon how far you usually walk, why not make use of the nearby national cycle route to walk into Rhayader or to the Elan Hotel &/or ElanValley Visitor Centre? The locals I met on that path were very friendly and helpful My visit was over Christmas and the cottage was decorated simply but beautifully with some lovely gifts left for me. Thank you to all the family and their staff for making me feel so welcome. I will definitely be back, but when the days are longer. That way I hope to be able to make use of the garden room & the pretty garden too.

Com for Sykes, would have liked a contact email for Sykes not always convenient to use the phone. As for the Cottage it was perfect for our needs, really clean and warm and the Dog loved it. About 1.5 miles walk to the nearest Pub, no mobile signal inside but there is BT internet. Parking is for one car only.
