  • "My partner & I went away for a week with our 2 dogs."

Very easy to find the site but slight problem finding the property as it was dark when we arrived … some passers by pointed us to where we needed to be (the name of the property was on each of the gates). Would have been helpful if there was a small mini map at the entrance. Small problem with mould but this was sorted with a quick clean and didn’t come back. There was a hell of a lot of condensation on the windows and on the wall where the bed was lifted up in the day. If the heating was left on and a window was left open then this would be less of an issue - which is what we did. The microwave oven had the markings rubbed off, which meant getting used to it took some time. The entrance door was slightly warped and let in a bit of a draft. It wasn’t a major issue for us. We did try to ring one or two of the owners to make them aware of this, but never got an answer or a reply. These few things didn’t impact our stay - we thoroughly loved the property, the views and surrounding area.

Only thing I would mention which isn’t really their responsibility is, it would been nice if the gaps in the fencing are smaller as we couldn’t let our little frenchie of lead incase she could get through the gap. Apart from that lovely few nights away and the hot tub was a nice feature to have.

  • "Had an absolutely fantastic time, the cottage was perfect for a relaxing weekend away, the only negatives we had were the directions to the cottage were pretty poor, took us an hour to find the property after following the sat Nav to the given location."

There was no point of reference for the additional directions. Which was frustrating as the sat Nav takes you one turning away (on opposite side of road) but the additional directions are from Rhayader. Also there were a lot of flies which can be expected given the location, however it made using the hot tub a bit uncomfortable. Other than those minor points it was excellent, will definitely look to go back there in the future.

  • "Shepherds View is in an amazing location with outstanding views."

The hut was as described and done to a very high standard. It had really great facilities and everything we needed for a short stay, close to the local town of Rhayader and other beautiful locations such as The Elan Valley and the Red Kite Feeding Station which was incredible. Unfortunately, there was one major issue which was the number of flies all over the outside and inside of the hut. On arrival we opened the door and were greeted by a LOT of flies and sticky fly traps were provided which made us realise it was clearly a problem. A lot of our time when at the hut was spent trying to get rid of flies which was really unpleasant and they could easily land on cups, plates etc. We couldn't leave the windows or door open during the day as they would quickly fly in which meant that the hut was very hot and stuffy. We were lucky to have good enough weather that we could sit outside and we think its likely that the flies were attracted to the heat from the hut as in the sun. There was an issue with our hot tub on the first day but had a quick response from Gemma to let us know that an engineer would be round the next day. We felt that a message or note could have been left for us so that we knew on arrival as we were quite disappointed. There was hot water in the hot tub but it was too hot to sit in for any length of time and actually enjoy. The problem was fixed the following day and the maintenance guy was really helpful despite not speaking any English. We really loved the hot tub once it was working properly. The hut was perfectly placed to view a gorgeous sunset over the hills and it was very peaceful and quiet. Overall we really enjoyed our stay in Wales and would love to visit the area again.

  • "The shepherds hut was lovely with excellent use of space and wonderful views and layout."

but there were a couple of small niggles for the price point which stops me awarding full marks. There were a number of small faults - slightly broken toilet seat (lifted it up so as to not damage further but got cold bum!), broken outside chair slat, cooker hob that switched itself off and then gave a fault reading that no googling would fix (came back on after a rest), jacuzzi only half working (assume just not turning right buttons but one broken and couldn’t fix with several goes). Ultimately, I expect these things are the consequence of a non-stop season in difficult times but for £300 I expected a little better. I also worry I will get the blame for these kind of things so would be useful to know in advance if there are things awaiting fixing.

  • "On arrival, the Shepard's hut was not very clean, with old food in the kitchen sink drain and toothpaste on the bathroom cabinet."

This was very disappointing, particularly during a pandemic. It seemed to need some maintenance such as the shower didn't drain properly, the toilet seat was falling off and the table wasn't screwed to the bed properly. Some instructions on how to get the bed down would of been handy! We had no WiFi although that wasn't a huge issue. Overall we enjoyed our stay and there are stunning views from the hut. The hot tub was big and we spent lots of time in it!

  • "We had a lovely week at Shepherd’s View."

The hut was very clean and welcoming and the owner Gemma was very helpful for anything we needed. The hut is small but laid out very well with some clever storage so plenty of room for all of our clothing and belongings. The bed folds down from the wall so has a very thin mattress making it very hard to sleep on- luckily we had an air bed we put on top and this made it very comfortable. We had a few day trips out in the local area (Elan Valley was lovely) and the local town of Rhayader had a Spar for essentials and some nice dog friendly pubs serving food. When back at the hut we spent a lot of time relaxing in the hot tub! The garden was perfect for our two dogs to run around in and there was a lovely seating area and a fire pit for the colder nights. The site was beautiful, with around 6 other huts/pods behind us, it still felt private and the scenery was stunning. They are building some hobbit houses which look amazing, the only downside to this was building work going on during the day, but this didn’t affect us too much. Would definitely recommend staying here for a relaxing break with the added luxury of a hot tub and excellent views!

The hosts were friendly and there was plenty to do in the local area. We visited Elan Valley, Devil's Bridge, drove the scenic route to Aberystwyth and had lovely meals out in Rhayader. We would definitely stay here again and even try one of the new pods which were being built. The only downside was the construction work going on to build the pods, however it didn't disturb us too much as we weren't at the hut in the day time.

50 till 18.30 except Sun. Vans parked outside the hut, we never used the hot tub as it wasn't private due to the above. No welcome file for info/advice or recommendations on local restaurants or places of interest. Maintenance is required to the hut and a good clean and cutlery had to be washed before use, we've stayed in sherherds huts on several occasions in Cornwall and really love them, this one was not as good and we were very disappointed with the whole experience. We have taken photos as we think you should see for yourselves. Let me know where to send them? We live in the country and generally we have tractors, trailers etc up and down our lane, but did not expect this on a weeks holiday away from it all...I believe we should have been informed about this and given the choice to change our accommodation, as the level of work being carried out is not small, its on a huge scale and clearly has been planned and discussed in advance, way before our arrival? This trip was a gift to my Daughter on completing her degree, to chill, have a lie in and take a well earned rest, but it did not fulfil the criteria as advertised, would you sit outside and use a hot tub with all that going on outside?

Please send in your photographic evidence to info@sykescottages.co.uk with your booking reference as the subject so we are fully able to look into this matter further. Or call 01244 345 700, option 1, option 3, we are open 9-7pm, 7 days a week. Property Owner

  • "We had a fantastic stay over New Year's Eve."

The view from the hut is incredible and we loved spending each morning sat in the hot tub watching the red kites soar in the sky. It's a real treat to be in the middle of the countryside but have the modern luxury of Shepherd's view. It is so comfortable inside and has absolutely everything you need. Everybody involved and associated with the pods was fantastic and very helpful. When we accidentally blew a fuse in the hut (completely our fault!!), Gemma was so kind and professional on the phone and someone was over to resolve the issue in less than 5 minutes. We even met the owners Mother in Law when we accidentally drove on to her farm trying to find the place (a little on that below). She was so kind and hopped straight into her car and led us to where we needed to be. Only advice to those visiting would be to ignore the directions (which I presume are automatically generated by Sykes). Given that we were headed to a reasonably remote location, we thought it was better to use the directions than follow google maps, but the directions are useless and are just very vague directions to the postcode (which takes you to a farm slightly down the road). If you type in "Gellilas" to google maps, it will take you exactly to where you need to be. Overall, a brilliant break away and we will definitely be coming back!! It was cloudy whilst we were there but I bet the stars on a clear night are worth the return visit!

As a new development the hut is well equipped...all round though as it is their first summer a few teething glitches. The family and staff who run the site were great. The WiFi was down for the first couple of days but then was fine.We found the cooker and hop really difficult to operate... It was unneccessarily modern and Hi Tec with impenetrable instructions. Lots to do locally.. especially if you like nature and the great outdoors... walks around the Red Kite feeding centre , Elan Valley Reservoirs and the local nature reserve and riverside in town..and it would have been good to have had our ride on the Vale of Rheeidol Railway - we got there and saw the train arrive but the return service was cancelled because of a lineside fire.

The one thing I was a little wary of was how small it looked, but I can honestly say its a lot bigger and spacious than it might look! Its got great facilities inside, the bed is very very comfy, its modern from top to bottom and we loved it. The place itself, is so remote, if you have a dog it is ideal - There is big open fields everywhere for them to run wild! The hot tub is huge and is so nice to relax in, in the evening or the afternoon. it is very easy to use and does everything you would ask of a hot tub! The owners are so helpful, kind and also very reachable via text or phone! They were lovely to us all week. So all in all I can highly recommend this place, the other pods look stunning too, all with private hot tubs. There is a town literally 3 minutes drive down the road with everything you need, with a big Tesco and Aldi also only 15 minutes away.
