  • "The property is in a great location and very comfortably sleeps 8 people in generously sized rooms."

The main kitchen/lounge area is well laid out for socialising. There is ample parking and a large garden. Unfortunately, while there is ample space for 8 people, providing for them is difficult unless you bring your own pans and ovenwear. The appliances have no instructions and getting the tv to work was a challenge. There is a clear electrical issue in the house and the bins are only emptied every 2/3 weeks, they were overflowing when we arrived

  • "It would be useful if there was a guide for each of the appliances, clear info."

Especially the heating and tv. Despite the thermostats being set at the highest value, we couldn’t get it warm enough. We had no idea what time it comes on ( if it does). And the waste bins would benefit from a good emptying.

  • "Everything was wonderful, the boiler never worked 100% we could not get the hot water to go up to the bathroom sinks nor the bath tubs in the 1st noe 2 nd floor."

The in floor heating did not work, but there were fan heaters that we used and we burned through 18 bags of logs during our stay which kept the cottage cozy. Other than the hot water and heating we would Definatley come back for a stay at the Milton Cottage.

  • "While there could be improvements we enjoyed our stay in Milton cottage."

The instruction book could do with updating and the tv controls are a complete mystery. No sign of the bin men as the waste bins are getting quite full. And despite the creaky floorboards we slept quit well. But all in all we enjoyed our stay.

  • "The house was lovely and as described."

The access was simple and easy to find. My only criticism would be that the welcome book in the property wasn't up to date as the local pub looked to have closed down and I'm not sure the information about the internet was up to date. We text the caretaker who advised that she'd asked the owners but we never got a response. Despite all this, we had a lovely stay at Milton Cottage and would definitely recommend it.

New bedding, pans, potato masher, cutlery. Also, oven needs a good clean we did our best with it but probably ready for professional clean.

  • "This property is in a great location and overall a great base."

However could be so much better with some proper care and attention. I’ve just seen a review on Sykes from this month which pretty much covers most points. Anyway here are my comments: There is an obvious major wiring / electrical issue. The electrician who attended told us that he is a regular at the property! Floor tiles cracked on kitchen and downstairs bathroom floor. The kitchen is quite dangerous as some tiles are loose and sharp. The upstairs toilets don’t flush well and take forever to fill. The WiFi is atrocious from a coverage perspective. The worktop around the sink is black in places from water ingress. The fit and finish of the kitchen is poor with doors not fitting/closing properly. The downstairs floor slopes a lot from the kitchen end down to the living area. The downstairs light switches/dimmers are temperamental, not working at times. The double bed to the left upstairs needs a new mattress desperately. Unbelievably bad ! The consumer unit and heating valves are in the kitchen units…is this compliant with regs? No fire blanket or extinguisher provided in the kitchen. The information book needs updating for most things. TV is pointless as a TV as only 3 or 4 channels work. This may have something to do with all the trees growing over the sat dish. No shower curtain in the en-suite with the bath/shower. In the same en-suite the hot tap is very loose. Again the same en-suite, the lights dim/flicker when using the shower. The kitchen stools around the island need to be binned as they are not safe to site on. The gutters have plants growing in them. Led lights throughout would be beneficial as downstairs the property does not get much natural light so lights are needed most of the time.

  • "On the whole, we had a great holiday and the house was a brilliant base for us and I would go back there."

In terms of improving things for the future, I would make some recommendations: The double bedroom with the green decor - the mattress is horrendously uncomfortable and I suggest the owners spend a night on it to get an understanding. The toilet cistern also needs some attention - it takes forever to fill and there is 'hammering' - a technical term which means it emits long groans as it fills or if someone else is using water in the house. Despite the guide book saying that we need not do anything with the heating as it was set on 'continuous', the heating was switched off and the house grew colder as the week went on. There were no complimentary logs. Admittedly I could have phoned for help but chose to sort it out myself which involved buying fire making stuff and then working out how the heating worked. There are a number of lightbulbs that need replaced. The wifi signal is dreadful. I could see they have put in a signal strengthener but this is either useless or not working - we ended up buying a wifi extender and this made a significant difference. The TV had a great picture but we could not access all the programmes. There was no guidance as to how to do this. In the information folder it said that there was information for all appliances at the back of the folder - there wasn't. The information for the mobile fish and chip van is outdated which meant we missed the new time and therefore had to rearrange to eat something else. The dishwasher was a bit erratic and needs to be looked at. I would also suggest buying scissors for the kitchen. The bins were full and didn't seem to be getting emptied - it looked as though previous guests had not complied when it came to filling with the appropriate contents and this may have resulted in the bin men not emptying them - which by the time the next party arrives, the problem is then exacerbated. Otherwise - it was great! We really did enjoy ourselves, it was an excellent base for all our activities. The absolute best thing was the dining room table which we were all able to sit round comfortably to eat, play board games and discuss things. Lots of hot water, plenty of crockery and the complimentary biscuits, milk and the availability of coffee and tea bags was a lovely touch for when we just arrived after a long journey.

  • "Was a bit of a mixed bag to be honest and was somewhere in between failing to meet expectations and meeting expectations."

On the plus side it is a good big comfortable property, bedrooms are good, lounge area good. On the not so good side: - Heating was not on when arrived and no logs/kindling supplied to heat took one day for heating to be at good level - All Showers had very poor pressure and noisy plumbing was noisy at times, 1 shower had no screen or curtain or anything to attach curtain to - not enough usable dinner plates for party size, dish towels, no cafetiere (corrected after couple of days), - WIFI non-existent, - not all hot plates working on hob - cracked floor tiles quite annoying as i area next to fridge/dishwasher/washing machine - no large pots to make dinner for party of 6 or 8

However, when arriving at the property it was dirty and we resulted in having to buy lots of cleaning supplies to clean the kitchen as there was mouse droppings in the cupboard and all the utilities needed cleaning as they were dirty and sticky. We lost a day of our holiday having to clean as it was just horrid. After this the holiday was okay. The lady who I spoke to in regards to the house was okay but did confess no one had been to clean in a month. Just really sad that the cleaning let them down, especially in covid

The only issue I had about the property is that the floors really need some TLC. Most of the floors are uneven and the carpet up stairs is heavily stained. There was a hole in the floor under the carpet by the stairs I kept standing in every time I went up stairs. In total there were 22 cracked/damaged floor tiles in the kitchen/downstairs bathroom that needed to be fixed and some uneven tiles where tiles had been replaced.

No Hoover, which was a challenge with a 14 month old baby. Very rickety stair bannisters. • "First of all lets start with the positives, the cottage is excellent if you want to be close to the whisky trail an you like open planned cottages, good number of towels are made available."

The bad, on arrival we had no hot water or heating until 7pm the next day. When it was fixed the underfloor heating would come on even with thermostats set to 10C and the hot water would not be consistent, you could turn the tap on and hot water come out, the next time the tap is turned it would be cold. With no hot water tank you need a good functioning boiler. The sticker across the boiler from an OFTEC plumber warning that the boiler has not been installed correctly and needs urgent attention was worrying. The property has 4 bedrooms, each bedroom had 2 bedside lamps. Only 2 light bulbs were working in 8 lamps. 4 lamps had the bulbs completely missing. The mattress in the second bedroom was extremely poor and the springs dug into my back. I moved two single mattresses from one of the other bedrooms to replace this mattress as it was far to uncomfortable to sleep on, one of these had a large urine stain on it which isn't pleasant. The hand rail on the stairs has a very large wobble to it which is not good. The cottage is definitely lacking some major TLC, kitchen pans and baking tins were thick with grease, the dishwasher opens its door by itself during a cycle. We had an entire week booked with this cottage and left on the Wednesday as it was more stressful being on holiday. It also shows that Sykes have very little power when things like this go bad, the only compensation I have been given is £50.

We did have issues with how the heating worked. Sometimes it felt warm sometimes it felt cool. Couldn't fathom how the underfloor heating worked. Plenty of towels and comfy beds. This was our second visit to Milton cottage and find it is a very nice place to stay. One suggestion would be to uprade the cooking pots and pans.

  • "Good first impressions, but that soon disappeared."

Dirty inside badly fitting cupboards and drawers, looked like gravy inside one drawer. Plates dirty and stuck together, oven and microwave dirty with baked on carbon. Built in fridge had “water” in the bottom, and smelled bad. Other fridge/freezer needs defrosting. Kitchen tap needs reattached to sink. Wood burner looks good, or would if we could use it! The door has no catch, so can’t even nearly close it. No teapot or frying pan. Place mats and coasters dirty. There is a bad mould buildup in two the showers. Floors in the two upstairs bedrooms creak very badly. This cottage is suffering very badly from a lot of TLC. We holiday regularly in cottages in Scotland, but this experience has been the worst we have had in the years we have done this. I telephoned the key holder with my concerns, but was told there was not enough time between guests to fully check everything, and the previous guests have obviously not cleaned after themselves. Not really happy with this though, as it is the middle of Winter, hardly rushed off their feet with bookings. All in all, we shall not be back here, and it was spoiled our previous good experiences of cottage holidaying, which is a great shame!
