  • "We stayed at this lovely cottage for 5 nights with our two young children."

The location was perfect, icolated but close to shops & short 12 mile drive from Elgin where they have everything you'll need for entertaining little ones. The cottage it's self is well equipped with everything you need. The bathrooms could do with updating & I would recommend not to use the shower in the upstairs bathroom as water gets everywhere, the bath isnt big enough for the shower above it. This wasn't an issue as there is a shower down the stairs. The WiFi wasn't the greatest, I emailed Pippa (the owner) & she got onto BT as this was a new router in the property. It still was'nt great as we took our fire stick & the movies kept having to buffer when watching them. But giving that it's a very old stone cottage it wasn't much of an issue. When leaving the property yesterday we stripped the beds & noticed the beds were soiled, obviously to little kids who have had accidents (it happens) my only recommendation would be, to use a waterproof mattress protector on these beds. We did have a lovely stay here & our children liked the big garden that looks onto a feild with a cow & bull in it. We would definitely stay here again.

  • "Worst Sykes property we have stayed at, by miles!"

The overgrown entrance is almost invisible except for the row of filthy bins. The approach to the cottage is strewn with fallen apples going mouldy and green slimey paving slabs. The filthy entrance continues inside, complete with a horrible smell of damp and sewers which is also evident in the kitchen. The welcome pack consisted of a faded A4 sheet proclaiming that the property had been deep cleaned… maybe two years ago! Waste of a potentially lovely property which needs utterly gutting and starting again. No point contacting the owner as the problems will need months to correct and they clearly don’t care. Obviously seen as a cash cow with little investment, apart from a decent heating system. I have many photographs of the horrors, if you need evidence.

  • "We enjoyed our stay at Annfield the cottage was very remote with no neighbours except wildlife, deer in the field opposite and many birds that came to the bird table."

The central heating was good enough to warm the entire place so only needed to use the wood burner once. We use Sykes most of the time and are generally happy, but we did find this one was in need of a bit of updating also a bread knife would have been nice. It is important to note that there are no facilities within walking distance except for a meagrely stocked post office; as far as we could tell the local hotel/restaurant mentioned in the write up has closed.

..the cottage itself is clean and tidy, everything you could possibly need is within the cottage, Im not sure if the picture on Sykes is updated but the cottage now has a nice comfy corner sofa in...not the one in the picture. WIFI can be a bit hit and miss, but to be expected, we found if you sit in the dining room you do get a better signal, rather than in the front room. We took our Amazon stick and watched netflix..unfortunately we left the remote..One thing I would suggest is check out the places to go visit before you travel we picked up a leaflet at the cottage that showed different walks, we travelled to Aberdeen which took 2 hrs and more diesel , only to find when we arrived that Countesswells Forest is now a housing estate, so a waist of 4 plus hours driving...but apart from that really enjoyed our stay and im sure you would truly not be disappointed, its MAGICAL......

Communication with Pippa was good, she let us know when she was not going to be around and gave us contact details for someone to call if we needed anything. The locals were friendly and we enjoyed chatting with our nearest neighbour Meg, also the lady walking her big white dog who gave us ideas for walking routes to take, another lady who we met on the Isla Trail, the staff in Aberlour co-op and the young man at the Elchies Estates farm shop . Yes the cottage could do with a bit of TLC, we could have done with an egg cup or two, a visitors book to give feedback and a bit more information about Annfield, the surrounding area, walks to take etc but these minor details were of no significance compared to the peace and tranquilty of the cottage. The garden was wonderful and the visiting creatures were amazing, we loved our daily meetings with Red Squirrels, Roe Deer and Hare plus all the birds who visited for a feed,as well as the Bats circling the cottage and theTawny Owl who called most nights. We know we had nightime visitors who took the food we put out but no Pine Marten was spotted. All in all an amzing stay, the only downside being that we had to leave after or two weeks were up. Thank you Pippa. for the privilege of sharing your cottage .

The cottage is un-cluttered so it’s easy to keep tidy. The kitchen was clean and it was easy to cook meals from scratch although you need to wash up after every meal (not a problem for me, as I hate mess!) It’s really quiet at night and, my daughter was not keen to listen to her creepy podcasts as she was afraid it might scare her during the night. We did bring a fire-stick that easily connected to the tv and the wi-fi for (non-scary) entertainment at night. I loved how quiet it was. We enjoyed star gazing at night and even saw three deer in the morning. The weather was damp in November, but this made it even better when we got back from walking the Speyside Way; for a glass of wine, a woodburning stove and, a hot bubble bath. The cottage itself is a little dated and some areas could do with a little refurbishment, but it was very clean and comfortable with most of the mod cons that you could require. .Yet again Annfield gave my wife and I all the ingredients for a perfect week of rest and relaxation that we so gratefully needed. Having stayed here for a short break back in January we literally unpacked the food, emptied our bags of clothing and stuck on the kettle, it really did feel like we hadn't left. The cottage is in such a perfect position in the highlands. It is a stones throw from the famous whisky trail, beaches that seem to go for miles and miles, lochs and hills to take your breath away when you reach the top.....awesome. We were lucky to see the sheep, pheasant, a young female deer and a huge male hare that jumped across rear lawn. If you are patient enough you might just see a red Squirrel carry out its gymnastic stunts across the fence at he side.....I did... So!, back to the cottage. If you enjoy having to look out of the windows and see hills, trees, wildlife, hear absolutely nothing to the point you can hear a pin drop, then this beautifully placed, well equipped and very clean cottage is the perfect place to spend your holiday and chillax or adventure as much as you can handle. There is one last thing!....If you don't hear "Devine Comedy - There's Something In The Wood Shed! when you see the "Wood Shed" you clearly aren't human......or maybe that's just me....!!… Thank you so much to Pippa and David for all the great correspondence, perfect hosts. The cottage itself was lovely and in a beautiful location and very comfortable. However when we booked the cottage it was advertised as having WiFi which myself and family were highly disappointed to discover it did not. My children were unable to watch any movies on their kindles and I had hoped to do some work/ studying while away and again this was impossible. I would like to know why you falsely advertise it as we wouldn’t have booked knowing WiFi was not available. Secondly when my husband arrived a little before me the beds had not been made up by the cleaners and he had to call someone back to find out where the bedding was, the person he contacted was Rita and she kindly made them up although did say the cleaners should have done them. Dirty cup and spoon left in cupboard. Some previous holidaymakers appear to have been left a ‘welcome pack’ as advertised. There was nothing when we arrived and no welcome note etc as previous ones had been left. There needs to be consistency with this. We have spent many holidays over the years in Scottish cottages at a variety of locations and price ranges but this was the first time there was no starter/welcome pack. First time we have ever booked with Sykes and I have to say that I am very disappointed with the service so far. As I say the cottage and garden were lovely and comfortable and we did enjoy our holiday but we did not receive what we had booked. Also on the first night my husband sat on my sons bed to read to him and the bed broke and they both ended up on the floor. It appeared the wooden frame was only held by small screws in the corner and therefore not suitable for an adult however there was no warning about this and we had to prop the bed up in books for the remainder of our stay. I look forward to your response.

The property

This tasteful, stone-built cottage enjoys a tranquil woodland location, just one and a half miles from the Scottish village of Archiestown in Moray.

Surrounded by wonderful countryside and offering welcoming accommodation for four, this could be the perfect stay for you and your friends or family.

Accessed by a single-track road, enter Annfield into a handy utility area, where you can leave your muddy boots and clothes after a scenic countryside adventure.

This leads into a stunning kitchen/diner which attractively combines the modern with the traditional, featuring rustic wooden worktops, a Belfast sink and contemporary units, concluding the layout in style.

Adjacent to this, you will find the heart-warming dining room which displays a social, wooden dining table and a fabulous woodburning stove in a redbrick fireplace.

About the location

ARCHIESTOWN

Elgin 17 miles; Grantown-on-Spey 24 miles.

Archiestown is a pretty and tranquil village located in beautiful Morayshire to the north of the River Spey and is one of the highest villages in Moray. In the centre of the village is a pretty tree-lined square, which is a designated conservation area, and the Archiestown Hotel occupies a corner location on the square. Archiestown is a very well kept and friendly village that has won the Moray ‘village in bloom’ competition on many occasions. The village is home to a shop, Post Office and local craft outlets, while the village’s hotel houses a cosy pub and popular restaurant. Archiestown is situated on the Malt Whisky Trail, with the famous Macallan Distillery to the east and the Cardhu Distillery to the west. Being in the heart of Speyside, Archiestown is an excellent location for touring this general area, including the nearby villages and towns. Nearby Aberlour is not only famous for its distillery, but is also home to the Walkers Shortbread factory and is a great location for some fishing too!
