Sarah and John very friendly, not in your face but on hand should you need help in any way. This was our second visit to Rowan Cottage and hope to be back again sometime. Lovely area for walking and also lots to see and do. Thank you so much for such an enjoyable holiday in your cottage. We were also fortunate to have lovely weather! John & Rose, Dalkeith

Nothing was overlooked. Sarah and John were fantastic hosts, happy to chat and help without being intrusive. Little extras like a home made cake, biscuits, wine and milk made for a great arrival. The cottage is the perfect base for exploring the most beautiful areas. Would highly recommend and will definitely return.

  • "The cottage was perfect for us."

The interior was very comfortable, yet tastefully modernised, and the owners had thought carefully about guests' needs. The kitchen was very well-equipped and the goodies and essentials our hosts provided allowed us to relax as soon as we arrived! An added bonus was the research the owners had done on this old school and their determination to restore it in a sympathetic way. I also have to mention that the owners were so helpful, but never intrusive, and it was really lovely having them next door in the old schoolhouse. There is so much to do in the area, although Covid seems to have taken its toll on businesses, and beware the Scottish National Trust opening times!

  • "We had a wonderful week at Rowan Cottage."

On arrival we were greeted with a warm welcome by the owner Sarah, who lives next door. She gave us some local knowledge, explained how everything works in the cottage, and said if there was anything we needed to know we need only ask. This was our first holiday this year and the effort she had made in the cottage gave us every confidence that we were safe, given current COVID-19 conditions. The cottage itself was immaculate and contained everything you could want for a week away, a true home from home. We would have no hesitation in booking this cottage again, and to highly recommend it to others.

It was very peaceful in a beautiful idyllic setting. Sarah and John had worked hard to provide accommodation of a very high standard with great attention to detail and nicely decorated. Sarah was extremely helpful in suggesting places to visit and cafes for lunch. We really liked returning to the cottage after a busy day and putting the wood burner on and relaxing on the sofas. Would have no hesitation in recommending Rowan Cottage to future holidaymakers.

We went dolphin watching at spey bay which was fun. A very relaxing, beautiful place.

  • "We had an absolutely fantastic time at Rowan Cottage and made to feel very welcome by Sarah and John."

The cottage is everything you would want from a holiday home, cosy, comfortable and exceptionally well equipped. For us it was in the perfect location for peace and quiet but near a town for shopping and buses/trains. There were lots of places to visit castles, stately homes, gardens etc and it was a great walking area. We would give this property 10 out of 10.

About the location

Elgin 28 miles; Banff 21 miles.

The pretty town of Huntly is located in Speyside, and is surrounded by rolling Scottish hills and open fields. The town has an interesting history, and the Standing Stones of Strathbogie lie in the centre of Huntly just beside the Brander Museum which is well worth a visit. Of course, the whole area forms part of the famous Whisky Trail and there are seven working distilleries for those interested in sampling a true taste of Scotland! Apart from whisky there are excellent hotels and pubs to appreciate, and Huntly also boasts an 18 hole golf course. A visit to the outdoor centre allows for the opportunity to participate in some roller skiing, or perhaps just enjoying the simple pleasures of cycling and walking in the wonderful Clashindarroch Forest is more your taste. Some 10 miles away is the town of Keith, gateway to the 'Malt Whisky Trail' and home to Scotland's oldest working malt whisky distillery. Keith is a pretty and very typical Scottish town with an excellent selection of shops and dining out opportunities.
