It really is the middle of nowhere and very quiet. Once we got the hang of the hot tub, we spent every evening in there and it was very private. The inside the Orangery is very comfortable and is a great place to relax. Turriff was a short drive away and Banff didn't take long to get to. A word of advice: if you like Lorne sausage, go to Browns' butchers in Turriff - world class!

Thank you for the great feedback. We appreciate it. (We agree on the Lorne sausage) :) Property Owner

  • "At the time of writing I can confirm and dispute some of the previous reviews."

I had mixed feelings about what to expect after reading the photos are inaccurate, the property is tired, the place needs a deep clean, a cupboard door is missing in the kitchen, there are no cleaning things, pegs to hang laundry, oven gloves, the lights trip out, the internet doesn’t work etc etc. I literally turned up prepared with a bag full of stuff and relatively low expectations. I could have saved myself the trouble because clearly the owners had listened to a lot of the feedback. Logs were stacked by the door with matches and fire lighters provided, there was a vacuum cleaner, dish washing capsules, soap capsules for the washing machine, pegs to hang clothes, fairy liquid in the kitchen along with a dish cloth, sponge, tea towel, oven mitts, kitchen towel and a fully equipped kitchen, no kitchen door missing. There was an ironing board, iron and travel hairdryer in the bedroom and hand soap, toilet paper in the bathroom. The place was easy to find and proved to be a great base for exploring the Moray coastline or venturing a bit further for a day out in Aberdeen/ Peterhead/Elgin. Shopping for supplies at the local Tesco’s ( open until 11pm every day day except Sunday when it closes at 8pm) was super easy and only a short drive away. I booked at very short notice and the owner Jamie was very accommodating in allowing me to have 2 larger dogs at the property (for a small additional fee) when one is the usual policy. Arriving at the property I see why it doesn’t make a good impression. The first thing I saw looking for the key was an ugly green curtain hanging on a string at the front door and walking immediately into the Orangery it has to be said it’s not the same as the advertising photos. However there’s this wonderful warm feeling that immediately envelops you and you instantly know you’re going to love spending time in this place. The cottage in my opinion was clean where it needed to be. The kitchen was spotless as was the bathroom, bedroom. It’s easy to forget that these properties are rented back to back with only a few hours in between to prepare. If the skirting /floor boards are dusty, there’s a stain on the wall, the odd cobweb, leaves floating around I’m certainly not going to loose any sleep or let it effect my stay. The one issue we did have was we struggled at times with the internet ( to be expected considering the location) it could be very slow and we found it did work better in some places than others. We also noticed neither of our mobiles had network coverage in the cottage. Overall I can say we had a wonderful week staying here. It ticked so many boxes I could happily have stayed longer and if I was to return to the area I wouldn’t hesitate to stay again. Jamie and his Mum are the best kind of hosts. They are there when needed but otherwise respect you’re on holiday and leave you to it

Thank you for your feedback. It helps us make changes to the property. We have addressed some of the issues you raised - the internet has been upgraded to mobile internet, and the curtain changed, but unfortunately mobile reception is not great at the property, which we will need to add to the Sykes website. The cottage is gods, but it is the orangery that makes the place. Great place to hang out in and just chill! The property has everything you need for self catering. The bath tub is the icing on the cake, but it took us three hours to heat, so start on time if you’re going to use it. The only negative things are that the cleaning could have been more thorough and they where some lightbulbs out in the bathroom, which made it a bit dark.

Thank you for your feedback. We are glad you enjoyed your stay and have addressed the light bulb issue in the bathroom. Property Owner

We are very disappointed to see you did not enjoy your stay at the Orangery. Unfortunately there was a lightning strike nearby, effecting the power. We did discuss the electrical issue over the phone, and we were under the impression you were comfortable without the heating. Due to the high temperatures we did not think the heating would be an issue, being the hight of summer and with previous guests commenting on how the heat from the Orangery gives the rest of property a very comfortable temperature. We have never had any negative comments regarding the sofa and most of our guests enjoy the cosy feel of the property. As for the sliding door, there are two external doors from the Orangery that lock, which makes the property very safe and secure. Property Owner

We absolutely loved our stay at the Orangery, it was simply perfect, from the comfortable living room, with smart TV, to the fabulous bedroom (with a wonderfully comfortable bed) and double doors looking out to the woods, to the fully equipped kitchen (literally everything you need to cook or even bake is there!), but my favourite room to relax in was the Orangery (lovely and warm with amazing views outside and fabulous light, a real little sun trap) We generally spent most of our time in there (apart from the time we spent in the brilliant wood-fired hot-tub). The icing on the cake was listening to the birds singing in the evening and a rare spotting of the elusive Pine Maten. Absolutely fantastic, can't rate the Orangery highly enough! Five star plus!!!!!!! Jamie was the perfect host and the welcome treats were devoured almost immediately. Really can't wait to return to the Orangery! Thank you

  • "We had a lovely stay and were very lucky with the weather so we weren’t in the property all day."

Few things to note for improvements: 1. Missing kitchen cupboard door was unsightly 2. Cob webs throughout the property and poor cleaning- plaster wrapper was in the living room when we arrived 3. Lack of utensils for self catering- I.e pepper, oven mitts (we bought and left a salt and pepper grinder and sea salt) 4. No clothes pegs so couldn’t hang washing outside 5. The dishwasher leaked and had a puddle every morning in the kitchen floor, we never used the dishwasher once because of this but it was still happening 6. No cleaning products or instructions for the hot tub, if we had this we would have used it more as it got a bit dirty after each use 7. Only seating outside was 2 fairly rickety upright chairs, if there were lounge chairs it would be better as it was lovely weather when we stayed 8. Bathroom could use a good deep clean- grout in tiles was very dirty 9. We had a power cut when we were there and the instructions must have been for the fuse box in the main part of the house and not the Orangery, if this could be updated that would be a big help. Luckily power came back when we were looking for a solution but we didn’t have phone signal to call for assistance when the power went out

We love the hot tub, a real treat at the end of an outdoorsy day. We explored the coast again and did some cycling from the door. Cycled to Delgatie Castle, should have set off a bit later as we were too early for their wonderful Cullen Skink. Jamie called round on our first night to check all was ok and invited us to Shepherd's Loch's Open Day. We used our National Trust membership to visit Fyvie Castle, and whilst the guided tour was geared up to those with an interest in the paranormal there was lots else to interest us and a good café. We explored the grounds, saw red squirrels and an enormous flock of pink footed geese. We love this cottage and the surrounding area and feel sure we'll be back again

For example on arrival, the lighting above the mirror was broken, the sink clogged and the kindling for the wood stove was missing. All electric equipment is present and it functions well. On the other hand, the chairs in the conservatory and the garden furniture in particular, need to be replaced. And what may be positive in autumn and winter, is a clear negative point in summer: the conservatory gets hot after some time in the sun and is then difficult to ventilate. Finally, it is positive that there is now well-functioning WiFi (not listed on Sykes Holiday Cottages-site).

We had everything we needed. Jamie was very welcoming and popped by a couple of times to make sure all was OK. We didn't get around to visiting his farm so will look forward to that next time. We really loved the conservatory space. It was beautifully lit with lots of twinkle lights and was nice to sit at the wood burner in the evening while our dog ran about with his toys. The eco hot tub was fantastic, we were in it most nights. It took a few hours to heat up, but well worth your patience, just keep stoking it up as it burns through the wood pretty quickly. We found using smaller logs produced more flame which heated up the water quicker. We felt the living area would benefit from adding an armchair. There are lots of walks around the area, the forest walks were amazing and our dog had a great time investigating every inch along the way. All in all we loved our stay and will definitely be coming back.

Very French in style. Solid wood doors and thick walls. We didn't get to meet the owner Jamie but a quick call to him regarding logs and bedroom curtains was soon solved. Logs delivered so we could light the wood burner in the orangery and new bedroom curtains installed which changed the whole room from looking unkempt to plush. There was no armchair in the lounge and the settee was quite small. We brought one of the chairs in from the orangery which helped but neither were very comfortable. The bed was huge and so comfortable I had the best night's sleep ever. We didn't use the hot tub as we had read how long it takes to heat up and the weather was cold and wet but the bath in the bathroom was huge and lots of hot water. We would have liked more cleaning equipment a soft brush to sweep the orangery as grapes and leaves kept falling down. There was a large outside sweeping brush but it was too course for inside. There was no vacuum cleaner. Our dog doesn't she'd but I can imagine if you had a dog that did you would not be able to clean the hairs up. Overall we got to love the cottage and in better weather would love to visit again. The scenery and night sky was amazing. It is a bit remote but that gave it it's charm.

The accommodation is as shown in the photos, it has a homely feel and we appreciated our welcome pack of wine and shortbread. Jamie called first evening to check all was well and gave tips on running the hot tub stove - the secret is to really fill the firebox, it seems to burn from the back so use the poker to push the wood back each time you refill. Managed to get upto temperature in 2hrs, sometimes needing to top up with cold water. We were able to watch bats and saw shooting stars on the clearer evenings though it's still just as relaxing in wind and rain :) The Orangery location is a good base for exploring, we particularly liked Delgatie Castle and it's tea room and woodland walks as well as Cullen. Would love to come back.

Great having WIFI as was able to keep family updated on our holiday and for them to know we arrived safely as our journey was very long and arrived late at night. Hot water and heating always available. Bath was big enough to drown in!.. I'm quite short! The shower wasn't very powerful but there was always plenty hot water. It was quirky and rustic and a wonderful place to stay with all facilities you could need. We enjoyed the hot tub - the hubby sorted that out and whilst it did take time to warm up, once ready, it was lovely. We enjoyed time playing board games in the orangery part of the property and it was a great place to get our washing dried - we made a make-shift washing line and clothes were dry within the day. Jamie, the owner, was really friendly and helpful. Came to check we were managing okay and his son took a shine to our dog, Lucy. We ordered an Asda grocery delivery for the day of arrival and this turned up no problem. We also ordered a couple of board games from Amazon and these were delivered. There is a small Tesco supermarket in Turriff where we picked up extra bits of shopping. Whilst staying here we visited Delgatie Castle, Gardenstown, Bullers of Buchan and Aden Country Park. We arrived on Saturday, after a 9 hour journey, to find there was no heating and the TV and wifi were not working.  Jamie and his team acted promptly to attempt to resolve the problems, restoring the heating later that evening. The TV was replaced with a new one the following day and the Wifi was up and running by Tuesday evening.  Overall cleanliness of The Orangery was good, however, the curtains in the bedroom were very badly stained and there were obvious signs of wear and tear, such as broken door handle on sliding door, the foot pedal on the bin was broken, there was chipped crockery and glassware,  and obvious signs of paint work requiring attention. Comfort was good overall, the bed was extremely comfortable and we both slept very well all week.  Our stay overall was very enjoyable, we just felt that attention to detail was somewhat lacking, considering the four star (tick) rating.

We loved this. He is very passionate! We also visited Pennan and found a few hidden Gems in the surrounding area! Beautiful peaceful place and it was just what we needed! We will defo be returning in the future!

  • "My husband and I had a wonderful 5 nights at The Orangery near Turriff."

We arrived to a really thoughtful basket of essentials (bread, eggs, milk etc.) and the cottage was lovely and warm and clean. Jamie, the owner, was really friendly and we can't thank him enough for his hospitality. He was on hand to answer any questions we had and made really good recommendations of places to eat and visit. The Orangery is in such a peaceful and beautiful setting, and I would be happy to recommend it to anyone who is looking for a relaxing break in Scotland.

  • "A huge thank you to Jamie for giving us a much needed getaway at the Orangery."

The cottage is wonderfully cosy, and set in such an idyllic location that gives you the feeling of seclusion yet only a 5 minute drive from all the amenities in Turriff. The wood-fired hot tub was particularly lovely on a crisp, clear evening! To top it all off, Jamie invited us to his farm to see the awesome projects he has on the go, and even arranged a guided tour of the nearby Craigston Castle. We will definitely be returning!

  • "First of all we would like to thank Jamie for being the perfect host, nothing was too much trouble for him, such a friendly down to earth guy."

We arrived pretty late on our first evening and the welcome pack was gratefully received and the fresh flowers too. The cottage is absolutely stunning and has lots of quirkiness about it. It is very warm and in our opinion very well equipped. The orangery is fabulous, especially if the weather is having an off day as you still get the feeling of the outdoors but with the benefit of a log fire if needed. Now the hot tube is a perfect bonus, it might take a little time to get the water to temp but we quickly learnt how to plan our day to ensure that we made full use of it and lots of fun was to be had chopping up the logs and setting the fire. There are miles and miles of walks to be found and right outside the door is a woodland walk perfect for a stroll with the dog after tea.

  • "It seems to be a much forgotten part of Scotland, but is a must visit, and there is plenty to see and do."

We had a stay at the Orangery while doing the NC500 touring route, with a detour, and it was well worth doing so. We were delighted with both the stay and the host Jamie, who was warm, welcoming and helpful. The photos and description are perfect, and it is a quite unique place to stay. It was well equipped and homely, with nice touches such as the food and wine awaiting us, and the use of the wood-fired hot tub. The neighbouring woods were full of wildlife, with sightings of deer and buzzards on every walk through it. It was all superb, and we would like to thank Jamie for happy memories of a wonderful stay. Being able to bring our dog along was essential, and he enjoyed the woodland walks too.

It’s such a beautiful place, surrounded by beautiful places to explore. It has the coast and countryside close by and just being in the cottage if the weather is bad is wonderful. James was a lovely host, he had fired up the log burners for us when we arrived and the map he’s drawn that’s in the cottage is so helpful and was on hand if we need help with anything or any information. We’re already planning to go back with family next summer.

  • "Exceptional- Wonderfully rustic."

What a welcome- On arriving the fire had been lit, the flowers had been freshly cut, we had a lovely surprise of a bottle of wine and other fabulous food items, music on in the background and from the moment we arrived we truly did not want to leave. We can not decipher whom we are in love with more, Jamie’s Mum, Cuckoo or the man himself Jamie. When leaving here after a week we were due to continue for a few more days on to the borders-however because we knew nothing would compare we went home and started planning for our return. This property does have a wood burner hot tub which due to poor health was unable to use-however even this was fired up and ready to go- phone Jamie first if you have accessibility questions or maybe an arrival time if you wish your tub to be just the right temperature. Thank You Jamie
