  • "Loved staying at Hitchens Cottage."

I got a call from the owner, Sally, before I left to let me know the cottage was ready early. Sally is really friendly. I popped a text to her midweek just to say I was enjoying my stay. Sally checked I was warm enough as it was stormy. Heating is so easy to adjust. I felt comfortable and safe. There was plenty of room in the lounge and bedrooms for my Greyhound's bed. Micky settled well which normally takes a while. The cottage was super-clean. I did my best when I left, but sure I didn't meet the standard I found the cottage in! The purpose of my break was peace and good walks with Micky. This fit perfectly. There was minimal noise from the surrounding properties, barely noticeable. Our preferred walks along the cliffs meant no traffic and actually, very few people and dogs as they were mostly on the beach. Those I did meet were very friendly. Although there are plenty of sights to see, I just wanted to enjoy the immediate area, explore and relax. Found a nice, circular walk, although at one point the edge of the cliff was a bit too close for comfort. Was sad to see the erosion. We made our way to the lighthouse too. I highly recommend Hitchens cottage. You will need to take things like cooking oil and sauces/ketchup if you use them but there is salt and pepper on the table. There was a pint of milk and some very tasty biscuits on arrival that I enjoyed. The only negative is that I couldn't reach the coat hooks without going full stretch (there is a portable step in the kitchen if needed) :)

  • "Wow! We were blown away by this property."

This was truly the best place we have stayed at. It was spotlessly clean and everything you needed in terms of facilities. The neighbours were also really friendly, which makes a holiday even more memorable. If you like a quiet village location, with a lovely local pub, then Hitchens Cottage is the place to be.

  • "The cottage was lovely."

Just a couple of things - oven is not working as it should, cupboard to the right has got starting of burning. I found the door not holding the heat, so cooking times were long. Door to patio had a brick wall in front of it so couldn’t see much-but it was ok. The bed was rather small. My partner is a tall fairly large chap so we had some problems with comfort - this is not a complaint. I would be worried by the oven if we went back there. Other than above all, we had a good holiday. Maureen

  • "The cottage was lovely very clean and dog friendly."

Everything you needed was there including picnic ware for outside. There was also tea, coffee, milk and biscuits on arrival (very welcoming). There was just one problem with a dripping tap in the bathroom. I am sure this will be rectified in the near future. We will definitely visit this area again and will hopefully be able to use Hitchens cottage again. Many thanks to Sykes holidays and to the owners of the cottage for making our stay a very welcome and happy one.

Press down toilet flush needs attention as it was very stiff and needed two thumbs pushing down hard to operate it. One small wooden towel rail over bathroom radiator insufficient to accommodate six towels for two people let alone enough room for four people! Comprehensive kitchen inventory but ,surprisingly, no scissors.

Great garden for our dog. Only small downside is you couldn't get onto the local beach due to subsidence. Winterton on sea was just as good if not better. Would stay again

  • "Hitchens Cottage was booked,as fed up of the same walks with the dog here at home."

It was warm, with an enclosed hall to clean and dry the dog off. Coat hooks over the radiator so you put on toasty coats to go out in. Lovely long bath to read my book in. The mattress on the bed was spotless and very comfortable. Did the 7 mile circular walk around Happisburgh, which despite it being -1d was good. Lunch at the Hill House pub was cosy and a 5-10 m walk away. All in all a lovely little holiday to brighten January up.

The property

Approached via a quiet and narrow Norfolk country road, positioned just a few metres down Blacksmiths Lane in the village of Happisburgh, is Hitchens Cottage.

This East Anglian getaway, with its own courtyard, offers a wonderful barn conversion, formerly the stables to the lifeboat horses.

This block of cottages has been divided into four, each named after the internationally acclaimed artists; Ivon Hitchens, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson, who used to holiday and draw inspiration from the area.

The cottage retains much of its history hidden in between the brickwork and exposed beams, adding bundles of character to a well-appointed setup.

On entrance, you come to a hallway, which displays pictures of said artists proudly on the wall, giving you a sense of nostalgia.

This leads to the first double bedroom on the left and a twin straight ahead.

They each have ample storage space, making your stay as comfortable as possible.

Gather with your family and friends and feast on a home cooked meal at the dining table, or curl up on the l-shape sofa, making the most of the open-plan layout.

The kitchen is fully equipped, including a dishwasher and washing machine for your convenience.

Just off from here you can indulge in a hot soak in the family bathroom or freshen up under the shower after a day exploring the wider region.

The front garden offers a lovely picnic area, where you can enjoy a delicious meal rustled up on the barbecue, followed by a tasty bottle of wine.

It is fully enclosed and has a small patch of lawn to sit on if you prefer, as well as lockable bike storage.

This location is perfect for walking into the village centre.

Grab your comfy shoes and stroll down to the beach, taking in the familiar sights along the way.

There are footpaths each way you turn, the main one being just across the road from the property.

There is a Post Office and shop and a traditional coaching inn.

The lighthouse is a beautiful sight on the headland, which you can visit on public open days and climb its steps to the lantern.

St. Mary's Church also has a tower, with public open days and views across the deep blue waters of the North Sea.

Happisburgh is within a 15-minute drive of the market towns of North Walsham and Stalham with easy access to the Norfolk Broads, the historic city of Norwich and many other tourist attractions.

The ideal location for a family holiday by the coast.

About the location

HAPPISBURGH, EAST ANGLIA

Norwich 19.3 miles; Great Yarmouth 22.5 miles

This historic village brushes the East Anglian coastline in the English county of Norfolk. Its lighthouse is the oldest working light in the area, as well as being the only independently run beacon in Great Britain, dating back to 1790. Its imposing tower of red and white stands proudly on the north-eastern headland surrounded by verdant countryside. You can visit this beautiful structure during public open days and climb the 112 steps up to the lantern. Another notable building in the village is St. Mary's Church, a 15th century landmark, whose tower warned mariners of the position of the perilous sandbanks nearby. This church also has set open days, where you can enjoy splendid views of the sea and enveloping fields from the top of the tower. Enjoy a picturesque stroll down to the beach and watch the lifeboats speedily tackle the untamed seas. There is also a village trail for you to amble, taking you past all the Happisburgh landmarks worth seeing. The village of Winterton-on-Sea is within easy reach by car and boasts a vast beach and wildlife-rich nature reserve that has attracted colonies of Terns and rare Natterjack toads. The old fishermen's cottages and village church makes it an idyllic location to bring the family for a day out. Further afield is the city of Norwich with its two cathedrals and Norman castle, whilst the popular seaside resort of Great Yarmouth offers one of Britain’s largest open air markets. A wonderful destination for your next holiday by the sea.
