  • "Ty Mawr is an absolutely beautiful Welsh cottage."

Everything that you could possibly need for a thoroughly relaxing stay is included inside this cottage. This is our second stay and we would return again without any hesitation. We received a lovely warm welcome as heating was on during arrival. Also greeted with a lovely bottle of Prosecco and hand written card. What a great start to our stay. Our dog just loves the location of Ty Mawr because of the hill just above the cottage. Blaenau Ffestiniog is just such a great place to base yourself. So close to Snowdonia National park and array of stunning local beaches.

    • Blankets on sofa smelt a bit doggy on arrival. Ty Mawr is a beautiful, cosy property with every possible detail thought of, including ample parking and lovely paved & lawned outside areas. It is well located and we would definitely recommend. Thank you :-)

Thank you for comments. Blankets are changed on each changeover so should not be any dog related smells. The shower has a physical switch that may require two hands but it is in working order. Owner lives locally so could have addressed issues during your stay if reported. Property Owner

  • "Great cottage."

Very clean and was more roomy inside than expected. However, the stairs are rather narrow! It did get cool in the evenings, but the heating was responsive and there were fleecy throws to wrap in. There are two good sized parking spaces off a small side lane. As the picture shows, the cottage is next to a main road, so there is some traffic noise, but we were still able to get a good night's sleep in the comfortable beds. There are information books and leaflets available in the cottage which we used for walks. The bottle of prosecco was a nice touch. Diolch yn fawr!

The cottage was exactly as it is on the photos and in a great location to explore Snowdonia. It was great enjoying the garden in the sunshine after a day of walking and felt like being at home thanks to being able to cook meals in the kitchen. Highlights included, private parking, secure garden, clean towels, kitchen with all utensils and a washing machine. It did get a little chilly in the evening downstairs due to the slate so recommend bring extra blankets/jumper. Comfortable nights sleep. Will be back again.

Thank you for your lovely feedback , we are glad you enjoyed your visit and are delighted that you will be returning to stay with us ,there are blankets dotted around the house and also a generous starter pack of logs is provided for the multi fuel stove for chillier days. Property Owner

Location wise, it provided an excellent base to explore that part of Wales. The local town has little to offer in terms of places to eat out in the evening which was the only negative to the location. Great parking behind the cottage, which is a big plus as the road is busy. We hired the cottage as it was dog friendly, which the cottage is however the garden isn't totally secure. One of our dogs, a medium size breed, jumped the wall into the garden next door so he was unable to use the garden freely after that.

We picked up guests from Holyhead which is a just over 90 minutes drive (a little less to Beaumaris) and also had a day out at Prestatin again 90 minutes or so drive (so Bangor and Conwy etc are inside these times) each way of course. We also went to Aberystwyth via Camelot Caverns with the return journey being 90 minutes and as far out as Abersoch and Aberanand inside an hour's (spectacular return) drive... Blaenau Ffestiniog is a little run down, but the chippy (Trish n chips) is fantastic, the Coop a godsend and the people all so friendly and being nestled at the head of the Vale of Ffestiniog with the mountains and slate mines looming around it is still a great place to visit and browse the local shops. Shops are closed on Sundays! We did not ride the trains as it would seem that they consider dogs below even third class citizens and are not allowed, so we took our dogs to the beaches (check access as many are restricted 1 May - 30 Sept). Got to be aware that the local walks are often sheep proofed, so you may need to manually insert and extract your pooches over sties and gates... our big and small westies were unable to cope with these challenges on their own (both being sub sheep sized), fortunately there are lots of walks with kissing gates, but for big dogs these can also present a challenge. Recommended...? Yes, 100%

It has a real warmth like being in your own home and has been renovated to a very high standard. The walk straight from your back door to the lake between Manod Bach and Manod Mawr is just stunning and really good fun. Ty Mawr is in a perfect location to explore Snowdonia and even if you have poor weather over the mountains, you can drive north to Llandudno or Great Ormes Head and have brilliant sunshine more often than not. Pictures or television ads. just cannot capture the scenery here. The only way to really take it in is to go here and see it for yourself. There is always something amazing to do in Wales. I have no doubt that we will revisit Snowdonia time and time again over the coming years as it is like being in another country; like the woodlands of Canada.

  • "North Wales, Ty Mawr cottage and Blaenau Ffestiniog - the good, the bad and the ugly."

We had a great time in North Wales, if you like walking and views this must be well at the top of the list and difficult to beat, it seems to feature so many times on BBC Countryfile and now we know why - North Wales, we will be back. Ty Mawr is a cottage situated on the outskirts of the main town of Blaenau Ffestiniog actually in Manod, it could be the last house. That meant walking to any local amenities shops, pub etc. was in our view excessive. The closest pub had recently closed down so a car journey was always necessary to get to the not so local convenience store. We quickly learnt to get what we needed on the way back to the cottage so as not to have to go out again. Going out again, now that was the problem. A parking space is proved and as you can read on other reviews it can be a challenge to get into and out of. It is not helped by the steep angles, low walls (not much can be done), and excessive vegetation, this can and should have been managed. Road side parking was a no-no, we believe the neighbours choose to park their cars directly outside to force Ty Mawr guests to use the off road space. Whilst we where there that issue was sorted, no-one can park outside because the local council have applied parking bans and painted double yellow lines directly outside the cottage. In fact we got a nice notice from the council asking us not to park our car there while they did the work. I think some of the local residents took offence as they spent the night moving the road side cones around. The cottage 'worked' lounge, kitchen/diner and bathroom all down stairs, comfortable but so needed a larger screen TV. Excellent there was BT WiFi and Sky TV but if you can't see it what's the point? Oh and the water pressure, I've never experienced such high water pressure, the cottage is in need of a water pressure regulator 'cause ever time you turned on a tap the high pressure caused splashing which needed moping up or drying off your clothes. Also, far to many of the owners 'bits' left in the cottage a little more clearance would give guests some more space. Bedrooms upstairs, both comfortable but the main bedroom (or the one with the double bed), was a little squeezed, (perhaps a smaller double). And no welcome pack! that was a first likely we had some milk. As for Blaenau Ffestiniog I can only describe it as 'grey'. It takes great pride in being an old slate mining town and you can see it. Some interesting features are the Llechwedd slate caverns, quarry explorer, Ffestiniog railway and local walks, these are a must if you like that sort of thing. The town isn't the most exciting but you are well positioned for the drives to, Betws-Y-Coed, the north coast resorts and of course Snowdon, the list goes on. Also there are some great pubs and walks in the driving area difficult to recommend them all.

The owner thanks you for your comments and is disappointed to hear that you were unhappy with the decor of the property as it is exactly as the photographs depict. With reference to the parking, it has been extended for easier access and can now accommodate 2 cars. Should you require any assistance in choosing the correct property for you please call our travel experts who are on hand to assist. Property Owner

About the location

MANOD

Blaenau Ffestiniog 1.5 miles; Porthmadog 10 miles; Betws-y-Coed 13 miles.

Manod is situated between the impressive Manod and Moelwyn mountains near the centre of Snowdonia National Park. Only 1.5 miles away is Blaenau Ffestiniog, once the capital of slate quarrying and in the 18th Century known as the "City of Slate". The town stands in an elevated, natural bowl amidst this mountainous region, has a good variety of shops and pubs, but is best known for its tourist attractions. One of the old quarries is now the renowned Llechwedd Slate Cavern, or there is the magnificent hydroelectric power station and famous narrow gauge Ffestiniog Railway providing wonderful trips through spectacular countryside. Enjoy superb walks and bike trails, good climbing at the Plas y Brenin National Mountain Centre, wonderful sandy beaches, great fishing or golf, or visit delightful Betws-y-Coed, the Italianate Village at Portmeirion, or Bala, with its renowned white-water rafting opportunities.
