This is a very spacious cottage with lovely furnishings. The kitchen is well equipped too which can't be said for many of the places we've stayed. It's in a very secluded location but is only a short drive from Porthmadog and there is access to Black Rock Sands. This is definitely somewhere we'd stay again!

  • "A lovely cottage with every comfort and amenity."

Feels like home as soon as you walk in and the layout and decor is really well considered. Great art on the walls as well, which is refreshing to see. The only thing we thought was a little stressful after such a chilled stay was the 9.30 am deadline to leave the cottage - I would question that one needs 7 hours to clean and prep for the next guests when arrival time is 4.30pm. Apart from that we would recommend this to anyone as a great holiday cottage.

Thank you for your feedback, it is always welcome. I am delighted that you were happy with the house. I take your point about 7 hours for cleaning being a long time. Our housekeepers do an amazing job and will always try to accommodate any requests for early arrival or change of departure time and I would ask that this request is made in advance. Last year the house had more than 40 bookings so inevitably things breakdown and get broken and we try to get any maintenance done during this time, before the next guests arrive. Property Owner

We would love to return sometime in the future. We loved the separate boot room to ensure shoes and dog were able to be dealt with before entering the main house. We would normally find local leaflets to be in the house so perhaps this might be a consideration for the future along with local walks from the house.

  • "A wonderfully calm and spacious house - really peaceful & relaxing, in a glorious situation."

The views from every side were magnificent, especially Moel y Gest, which just had to be climbed. We found the beach at Criccieth much better than Black Rock sands where there were lots of jellyfish & nasty brown scum, so went there for our beach days. There were loads of blackberries & sloes to collect in the hedgerows - this year's sloe gin vintage will be a good one. All in all we had a great holiday & didn't want to leave Ty Mawr at the end of the week.

We would have immediately rebooked for 2 weeks next year, but the price hike from last year's fees makes it unlikely that we will. We really cannot justify spending the increased price; which roughly works out to be roughly £300 per week more. Some cushions for sofas would have been good too, but washing covers each week could be too much. However, it should be possible to wash towels for new guests each week and we had only been told to bring those needed for beach. We had arranged with you to bring our own pillows and did so, but these were at the property, so communication broke down somewhere along the line. At property, recycling guidance was years out of date and more materials are taken than listed in welcome guide. Council website has a simle guide at https://www.gwynedd.llyw.cymru/en/Residents/Bins-and-recycling/What-goes-into-the-bin/What-goes-into-the-bin.aspx - also a one-page PDF guide that can be downloaded and printed. It would be good if a food bin was provided, as collected by the council. Overall, property and holiday was very good.

The house is finished to a high standard and is comfortable and stylish inside. The beds are comfortable. We were lucky enough to have sunny days and spent long evenings in the garden with just the sheep in the field next door for company. There are lots of walks and Blackrock Sands beach is just down the road. We think this wonderful beach is spoilt by people being allowed to their drive cars onto the beach, so we walked an extra 15 minutes over the hill to Criccieth where the beach is quiet and can be enjoyed in its natural setting.

Beautiful setting and couldn’t fault the house at all. In true old farmhouse style the floors upstairs are uneven in places but the house has been fitted out well. Only downside was there was no parasol for the table and chairs outside which meant limited use of the table during the hottest days of the year so far. Overall fantastic secluded location, amazing views and a great family holiday.

  • "We already had high hopes for this property from both the description and the photos, but the reality far exceeded our expectations."

Set in a secluded spot in stunning countryside, everything from Ty Mawr's location to the sympathetic way the property has been renovated, made this the perfect holiday destination. The understated decor, attention to detail and facilities are first rate. From the moment you turn into the driveway and see this sturdy house nestled on the flanks of picturesque Moel y Guest, you feel at home. With nothing but the sound of swallows, bees, grasshoppers, and the occasional bleating and mooing from the sheep and cows on the neighbouring farm to break the silence, this is the perfect 'get away from it all' spot. We revelled in watching the swallows swoop and dive as we ate outside in the evening sunshine, felt pampered in the morning as our feet were warmed by the underfloor heating, and slept better than we have done in years. Surrounded by great walking country - we strolled over to Criccieth one night and along Black Rock Sands to Porthmadog on another- Ty Mawr is ideally located for days out in Snowdonia. Portmeirion is just a short drive away, and we went on both the Welsh Highland Railway to Caernarfon and the Ffestiniog Railway to Blaenau Ffestiniog from Porthmadog. We had intended to spend a day in Anglesey, but with so much to see and do on our doorstep, we sadly never made it. A week wasn't enough to explore a part of the UK we had never ventured into, or to enjoy staying in such an historic and luxurious holiday property. A good excuse to come back next year!

The property

Ty Mawr Porthmadog is a simply stunning holiday cottage set in a beautiful, rural landscape on the Llyn Peninsula.

It’s 200 years old itself and has bronze age hut circles and a Neolithic Burial Chamber - history enthusiasts will love this setting!

Oh, there are also gorgeous sea views across to the beach at Black Rock Sands.

Inside, the holiday cottage retains much of its original character but also offers the modern amenities you’d expect from such high-quality accommodation.

The boot room is ideal for hanging coats, leaving boots or sandy beach gear.

Slightly out of sight is the washing machine and tumble dryer.

There is also a handy separate loo and wash hand basin.

Next up is the stunning hall but that word doesn’t do this space justice It has a vaulted ceiling and parquet floors that are furnished with rugs to make it a second sitting room.

In the main sitting room you will find comfortable sofas and chairs which have been arranged to make the most of the sea views.

It also allows you to enjoy the warmth from the fire in the colder months.

French doors open out into the garden.

The owners have connected the dining room to the sitting room and this room also offers sea view.

This then leads into the kitchen - we love the mix of wood, slate and quarry tile floors which keeps the buildings history alive. What a kitchen you’ll find here, too!

Mealtimes will be made easier with a dishwasher, electric oven and hob, fridge/freezer and microwave.

Even the stairs are amazing at Ty Mawr - Porthmadog!

There is a "Truth" cupboard in the stairwell that contains artefacts recovered from the buildings walls during the restoration project. There are three bedrooms, one of which is ensuite.

Each bedroom has a window seat facing south so you get even more sea views.

Two rooms have king size beds and the middle bedroom has two singles.

The ensuite bathroom and family bathroom shared by the two other rooms both have under floor heating, electric towel rail, basin, loo and bath with shower and shower screen and views over the countryside. Outside space includes a south-facing garden with comfy table and chairs a courtyard.

This is the perfect place to sit and listen to the sound of silence, with only the odd bird call or sheep bleating to break it.

Enjoy a morning cuppa in the sunshine or, by night, sit out with a glass of wine as there is little to no light pollution and the sky is awash with stars.

Ty Mawr - Porthmadog has so much history and has been transformed into a welcoming, bright and happy holiday cottage that’s ideal for your next family holiday in North Wales.

The farm is still active and you can spot sheep, cattle and alpaca grazing the lush land.

Black Rock Sands is super close by and it’s only a quick car journey to the bustling seaside towns of Criccieth and Porthmadog.

Steam train rides in stunning Snowdonia scenery, visits to castles, beaches and brilliant places to eat are all possible, as are walks and activities.

You’ll be spoilt for choice.
