Fabulous location and views, very clean and had everything you could need for a stay away from home. Whilst you do need to drive to all locations it is central to all of the tourist hotspots so not far to drive to any of them. A major bonus is the huge garden which my 2 greyhounds loved! If you go in autumn/winter or when its raining take extra dog towels as it is soft ground. Use of washing machine and tumble dryer though so not a problem if you forget! Highly recommend.

The bottle of wine and box of chocolates was a nice touch! The garden really is as good as the other reviews say and made the holiday for us - it’s huge, fully secure and chicken wired across the fences and hedges so I didn’t have any concerns about our greyhound escaping. The property is in a decent location as it’s quiet as there’s very little passing traffic, but only a short drive to nice walks (Erddig was our fave) and supermarkets. There’s also a dog friendly pub at the end of the road. We’ve already booked to come back again next year which probably says enough about how much we all enjoyed our stay!

  • "An absolutely beautiful stay!"

The cottage is a home from home, incredibly well looked after and we'll thought out. It has everything you could possibly need and as gorgeous as it looks in the pictures, they do not do it justice! We were really lucky with the weather and managed to BBQ everyday, finding great produce at a couple of fairly local farm shops. Our dogs loved the garden and it was lovely to be able to relax knowing they were safe and the garden was secure. We didn't try walking them straight from the cottage but there were some really nice walks within about 10 miles drive. We tried Alyn waters, Moss Valley and Errdig. Errdig was by far the favourite! The other 2 were small and didn't take much time to walk around, having to force ourselves to get any sort of distance from them. Our dogs, all a little older (German shepherd 11, westie 10 and husky 9) still require a good walk and we struggled to get 3 miles of the the Alyn waters and Moss Valley. Errdig was great, loads of woodland, a river and bug open spaces. We loved it so much that we tried to extend our stay whilst we were there but unfortunately and understandable it was booked up! Looking forward to returning! All we can really day is thankyou, it was lovely.

It has a lovely big, fenced garden which is a huge advantage for holiday makers like ourselves, who have dogs, but also very pleasant just to sit and relax in. The cottage itself felt very secure being within the owner's grounds accessed through electric gates at the entrance. Being able to park outside the front door of the cottage made it very convenient for ease of unloading and packing up. The cottage really does tick all the boxes and we had a very enjoyable stay visiting family in Chester and days out in North Wales.

When we arrived it was great to receive from Julie a box of lovely chocolates and a wonderful bottle of wine. There is plenty of space inside the cottage in the bedrooms, kitchen and dining area and in the living space watching the television and reading books while relaxing on 2 comfortable couches. It was also exciting watching the dogs playing together in the very safe massive garden. Looking out of the french doors it was superb to see many birds including a woodpecker and a hawk feeding from fat balls and smaller birds eating food that we put inside the bird containers on the fence. We found the location of the cottage is excellent just a few miles inside the Welsh Border and very easy to travel to villages in Snowdonia, coastal resort of Llandudno and the fabulous town of Conwy in Wales and in England it’s a real pleasure to visit places like Chester and Liverpool.

Only one thing I would change, would be the ability to control the heating/hot water times, but, admittedly, it was very cold weather with gale force winds, rain, hail and snow whilst we were there!! I'm sure if we had asked, the owners would have obliged as they were very approachable, but we didn't feel it was a sufficient drawback to have any adverse affect on our holiday. This cottage met all of those requirements and went beyond our expecations. The internet worked well (but was a bit patchy depending on where you were in the building) and the cottage was located in a lovely quiet rural area. It was quiet even though it is set back just a few yards from a fairly well used road but on the other side of the cottage there is fab views of rolling countryside. My only gripe was that the water heater came on very early in the morning and was noisy and I did not take too kindly to be woken at 6:00 am on my holiday when the objective was to do lots of resting and sleeping! That said, the heating worked really well and we were warm and cosy at all times and had hot water. Other than the noisy boiler, the cottage was very good. It was very well equipped, clean and comfy. We barely left the cottage for the whole week we stayed there as it offered us everything we needed. I particularly liked the provision of slippers and hot water bottles. The owner lived next door and was helpful and reactive to any questions or requests we had. The welcome gift was a lovely gesture too. Sykes also helped make our trip a good one with their attentive and supportive communications, in particular Jennifer of the Customer Relations Team.

Nothing about it felt like a ‘temporary’ home like some hotels and accommodation do. It had all the cooking facilities and utensils we could have ever needed. The children settled so well they were really happy here. It was half an hour from Chester zoo, Chester centre, the aquarium and the designer outlet. Plenty of little Dog friendly pubs serving food within a 10/15 minute drive. Plenty of places to walk the dog out the front door too. • "We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay."

This cottage was lovely, well laid out and provided everything we needed for our stay.,There were even barbecue tools! The beds were extremely comfortable and clean with plenty of pillows. It was well positioned, only a short drive to the nearest village and also within easy reach of Chester and Llangollen. We would definitely stay here again.

  • "We had an amazing week."

The cottage was very comfortable and exceptionally clean. The owner was very helpful, texting instructions prior to visit and also texted a day or so during our stay, to check everything was okay. The area is very peaceful and the outlook is stunning. We had a wonderful time and this was partly due to the accommodation and it's owner. We can honestly say that it was in our top 10 of places that we have stayed in.

  • "Commonwood Cottage was stunning."

Just as advertised and more. Garden was great for Scooby my Springer Spaniel. Great to know fully enclosed. Would definitely come back. Aqueduct by Llangollen was stunning. Also did the horse drawn canal boat trip. Do go there if can. Cannot thank Julie enough for my holiday. Highly recommend. Thanks.

  • "Lovely barn."

Really well presented. The kitchen needed a few things culinary wise, I left visitors feedback so, hopefully that will be sorted ready for other guests! It was great that there were no stairs to cope with. However it was a bit hard getting out of the shower, as it’s over the bath! Ideal for a dog to run around safely. No shops in the village other than the Spar. Too far to walk to, so we went in our car!

Thank you for your feedback. As all of our properties are self catering it is recommended that if you require any specific items or kitchen equipment to bring your own, alternatively if you call the office we can ask the owner before you travel to avoid disappointment. We hope this did not detract from your time at Commonwood Cottage. Property Owner

About the location

HOLT, NORTH WALES

Wrexham 5 miles; Chester 10 miles.

The Welsh/English border village of Holt was founded in 1282 and sits on the banks of the River Dee, 10 miles from Chester, where the Holt Bridge formed an important border crossing with Farndon for centuries. The village has seen several conflicts during its existence and damage from musket shots can still be seen in the door of the impressive St Chad’s Church. Holt is a picturesque village with a small village green, local pubs and shops and the ruins of Holt Castle, which date back to around 1284. Across the river lies the village of Farndon, over the border in England, where visitors will find splendid little shops, as well as welcoming pubs, ideal for relaxing in with friends and family. Why not visit the Roman City of Chester with its famous Rows, excellent shopping, celebrated zoo and popular racecourse? For those who like walking and outdoor activities, Snowdonia National Park is only a couple of hours drive away and is ideal for days out. Holt is a perfect base from which to enjoy this beautiful and exciting region.
