Very comfy and spacious. Games room was great. Handy for town and shops. Lovely Italian restaurant 5 minutes walk away. Only downstairs toilet is an en suite which is not ideal.

Thanks Siobhan for your kind comments, and for leaving the house so clean. We can’t do much about providing a second en-suite downstairs in an 800 year old house! That said, there are two more bathrooms upstairs, one of which is a Jack and Jill en-suite Just want to also say a big thank you for being so accommodating when a huge old tree came down in the high winds and fell into the primary school playing field next door. You kindly let us remove it whilst you were there. Thanks Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely family stay at Abbey Cottage for my father in laws 70th birthday."

The house was lovely and unique with lots of space for a family of 10. The garden was amazing and great for our 2 dogs as fully enclosed and safe. I delt with a gentleman named Ian who was friendly and helpful. The one issue we had was a bed broke. This was down to it being a child’s bed I think and an 5ft 8inch adult sleeping in it. The room with the 3 single beds either need to be advertised as a child’s room or more substantial single beds need putting in. This however wasn’t an issue and Ian was more than happy to help. We would highly recommend this cottage, we had a great time and definitely would return

Thanks Tracey for your kind comments - and for leaving the house so clean. Beds have been fixed (better supports) so will be fine for any future guests. Thanks again Property Owner

Although large and spacious with stunning features the cottage is warm and cosy with a relaxing, friendly feel to it. We had a wonderful stay and made to feel extremely welcome. Cottage is close to all amenities but down a quiet lane so feels very secluded and picturesque with the amazing friary ruins in front garden and beautiful gardens at the rear. So private and yet so near shops, cafes and lovely scenery. As the weather was mixed, we enjoyed the games room and the second sitting room for down time. The only minor problem was a mirror in the downstairs en-suite as it was far too high for any of us to use. Apart from that everything was wonderful.

The kids (and adults) loved the snooker table, table football, table tennis and darts, kept us entertained all weekend. The dogs adored the garden, what a fabulous enclosed space especially as the weather was so fantastic. It was amazing to sit in the house and look out at the ruins of a 13th century priory. I grew up in a big old family home with a big garden and huge playroom dining room etc so this really brought back some fond memories. The shops are practically on your doorstep and lots of nice walks like Moel Famau and Dyserth falls a short drive away with beaches at Rhyl and Prestatyn. The Sun Centre in rhyl has since been refurbed since I last lived around north wales but there’s no doubt it would still be as fun as it was. Great place, Nice friendly informative hosts. • "Abbey Cottage is beautiful."

The owner kindly met us there on arrival and showed us round. The property was very clean, the beds are comfortable if you like more than one pillow to sleep on which some of our group did I would recommend taking an extra one with you. The location is excellent when inside the property it feels secluded but is also perfectly positioned to walk to shops within minutes. This house has something for everyone we took older relatives with us so the two separate living spaces gave some down time for grandparents while the children watched Netflix and played pool and table tennis. The house is also very warm with fantastic under floor heating in the main living room. We had a problem with one of the bathrooms on our second day and the owner came straight out the same day and fixed it for us which was much appreciated. The oven was a little tricky and we found cooking food took a long time, one side being hotter than the other too. We recommend the Chinese / fish and chip shop by the traffic lights, the food was amazing. Our older members of the group would have preferred a shower caddy or some shelves to store toiletries instead of bending down while in the shower and some toilet roll holders and hand towel rails but that really is just a preference it does not take away that Abbey cottage is a fantastic house and the owner is super helpful. We can’t wait to return to Abbey Cottage again, thank you for a great holiday we were sad to leave.

  • "If you're looking for out and out luxury, this isn't the place for you."

But if what you want is a thoroughly comfortable bolthole, Abbey Cottage would take some beating. Like the remains of the friary in the garden, Abbey Cottage dates from the 13th century, and is claimed to be the oldest inhabited house in Wales. Signs of its medieval past are still evident in some outer walls and vaulted ceilings, all of which add to its charm. It was the owner's family home for many years, and it's as though they just moved out but left the house and its contents as they were. The result is a warm and welcoming lived in atmosphere, with all the equipment for day-to-day life - far removed from the sterile surroundings of some purpose-built rental properties where everything has obviously been counted out to accommodate the maximum number of guests and no more. Tucked away down a private (though very muddy!) lane around half a mile from the centre of Denbigh, the cottage offers total privacy and peace, which must make outdoor living in summer a real joy. But on a cold and damp February weekend we preferred to enjoy all the many activities offered in the toasty warmth of the cottage which, in addition to very efficient central heating also offered a wood-burning stove with plenty of fuel. We had a snooker room in the main lounge, plus a table tennis table, darts, skittles and cross-trainer in the integral garage. There were also stacks of books and games for quieter moments plus a massive TV complete with Netflix etc. Denbigh itself is a small, unassuming town about a 15-minute walk away up a long slow incline. There’s an Aldi and a Lidl at the bottom of the hill near the cottage, with The Coffee Pot, an excellent quirky cafe opposite which is a great place for breakfast if you don’t feel like cooking

The garden is a real highlight. Our only regret is that we did not spend more time in the house or garden - we are already trying to work out when to go back! We were a bit worried about the dogs and children but the owner, who could not have been more helpful, put our minds at rest straight away and said it was our home for the week and we could do as we liked (which was helpful as one of the dogs jumped straight into the pond as soon as we arrived!). Begin by entering into the spacious hallway and be met with an excellent ground-floor double bedroom to your left, home to an en-suite shower too, perfect for the older generation travelling with you.

This bedroom opens into the heart of the home, the lofty sitting room which features a modern woodburning stove, large corner sofa, two other sofas and a Smart TV, as well as a three-quarter size snooker table, providing plenty of ways to relax.

Another relaxing spot can be found in the second sitting room, with another woodburning stove in here, TV and lots of plush seating, you can wind down with a warm drink and a good book, while others head to the double garage turned utility/games room for a table tennis tournament, table football, or darts, with the washer and elliptical trainer in here too.

Rustle up some scrumptious home-cooked meals using the impressive range cooker in the kitchen/diner, with a long farmhouse dining table to seat everyone, you can spend long evenings feasting on delicious food, refreshing drinks and wonderful company.

Spend time outside in the idyllic and tranquil garden setting, with just under an acre of grounds to explore, you can relax at one of the two patio areas, watch over as children and canine companions play on the secure lawn, and take a morning stroll through the woodland areas before spying some wildlife in the two small ponds, with the ruins of Denbigh friary right next door within the boundary of Abbey Cottage offering local history on your doorstep too.

The garden is dog secure, surrounded by stone walls and fencing.

Retire to one of the bedrooms after another fun-filled day, with a ground-floor king-size bedroom completing the ground-floor layout, and three other bedrooms on the first floor, including a king-size and a triple bedroom (3 single beds in a very large bedroom) which both benefit from Jack-and-Jill access to a shower room, and another king-size, all with quality furnishings, with lovely views and plenty of storage space for your things.

Freshen up in the spacious shared bathroom, choosing to wake with a refreshing shower or take an indulgent soak in the Jacuzzi bath tub, adding a little bit of luxury to your trip.

Stroll into the town of Denbigh and reach pubs and shops in minutes, pick up fresh and local ingredients for your own culinary creations, or dine out at one of the many restaurants and pubs.

Enjoy a family walk up to Denbigh Castle (10 minute walk from the house), resting on a steep hilltop, you can take in the amazing views of North Wales from here and get some amazing holiday snaps next to this dramatic fortress.
