  • "We had a lovely stay at the cottage."

Our hosts were very welcoming and made us feel at home. The bathroom was equipped with a great shower, the bed was comfortable, and the kitchen had all we needed. It took some time to get settled since the living room and bedroom are adjacent to the main house, but it was comfortable once we had adjusted. The only other thing to be aware of is that the first photo in the listing is of the main house and not the annex. Besides that we had a great stay - the cottage is in a lovely quiet location but not too far from Chester and Liverpool, perfect for a relaxing week long break. Plus the cats were adorable!

  • "Lovely warm welcome from Tom."

Has all you need for a stay, with spacious bedroom, good compact kitchen (with fresh biscuits) and a great shower. The cottage is tucked away right on the river, yet still within walking distance of shops and pubs. Wrecsam and Chester are on the doorstep. There is a lovely walk along the river - although the river had flooded after the first day of my stay.

  • "We had a great stay at Deeside."

The cottage was tastefully decorated with some lovely individual touches and had everything we needed for our stay. Great walk-in shower and very comfortable bed too! Holt is a lovely village with a couple of great coffee bars and a well-stocked village shop, and it's ideally placed for exploring North Wales and Cheshire. Tom was a great host and we enjoyed meeting his two lovely cats!

  • "We were made to feel very welcome upon arrival at the cottage where we were greeted by the owners and had a brief tour around the farm."

Fantastic location and lots to do, we found we had more places we wanted to visit than time! The cottage itself was wonderful, great amenities and period features which we loved! We would definitely stay again and highly recommend to anyone! Thanks again! :)

  • "What wonderful hosts!"

We were made to feel very welcome and that Dee Side Farm Cottage was our home from home. Wonderfully decorated in keeping with the age of the building, loads of original features but with probably the best walk in shower we’ve used. Very quiet location in a great location: we would recommend the short walk into England to use The Raven and The Hare in Farndon. We had a big day out and visited Harlech and Criccieth on one day (Dylan’s on the Esplanade in Criccieth recommended) and on the second full day we had a delightful drive and mooch round Llangollen. We didn’t cook in the cottage due to the proximity of excellent eateries so can’t give feedback in that respect. Would recommend Bellis Brothers for their breakfast and the farm shop for lots of scrummy things! Bed was very comfy in a large upstairs bedroom with gorgeous views - rest of the accommodation is on the ground floor including the toilet so maybe something to bear in mind if you’re of a similar age to us and need to get up in the night if you get my drift.

The property

Situated on a Grade II listed farm in the quaint village of Holt in Wrexham is this characterful annexe, Deeside Farm Cottage.

Ideal for a couple, a solo traveller, or any avid fishers, this holiday home backs onto a fishing river, while offering a quirky and characterful interior.

Off-road parking greets you at the cottage, before stepping in to find a well-equipped kitchen with a gas hob and electric oven, where you can rustle up a meal for you and your loved one.

Continue through the property to find the living/dining room so you can plan a day out over dinner or relax and unwind on the sofa while flicking through the Smart TV's channel and streaming services.

Make your way to the mezzanine bedroom and get some rest before a busy day of exploring, and in the morning, freshen up in the contemporary shower room, stylishly juxtaposed with the history of the building.

Outside, enjoy a glass of wine in the last of the summer sun on the patio or perhaps try your hand at croquet on the owners' croquet lawn.

Be sure to savour the views of the river and the countryside, where you can fish, or simply wander through the peaceful grounds; the river runs all the way to Farndon, so walkers and explorers can spend the day heading over the border along the babbling water.

The town of Wrexham has a good selection of dining options such as the popular Fat Boar, as well as the National Trust's Erddig, a stunning manor home encompassed by beautifully kept grounds.

The other direction will take you over the English border and into the city of Chester, known for its Roman heritage and protected architecture.

Visit the city's cathedral, walls, and rows, and take advantage of the variety of dining and shopping options.

Animal lovers may want to venture slightly further to Chester Zoo or Blue Planet Aquarium.

Back into Wales, the thriving town of Llangollen within the Clwydian Range AONB makes for the perfect day out.

Browse quaint shops, walk alongside the rapid waters of the River Dee, or if you're up for a challenge, climb your way up to Castell Dinas Bran and admire some of the best views in the area.

About the location

FARNDON

  • Chester 10 miles
  • Llangollen 19 miles

The village of Farndon nestles quietly near the River Dee, approximately 10 miles south of Chester. The village was an important place historically and has been a site of conflict and cultural exchange since the Angles settled in the area in the 8th century. The border moved numerous times during the following centuries, placing Farndon alternately in Wales and England. Today visitors will find splendid little shops, as well as welcoming pubs, ideal for relaxing in with friends and family. Why not visit the Roman city of Chester with its famous 'Rows', excellent shopping and celebrated zoo? For those who like walking and outdoor activities, Snowdonia National Park is only a couple of hours drive away and is ideal for days out.
