  • "Generally the property is very comfortable, possible too warm on occasions."

I suggest, the heating/water controller needs reprogramming to more convenient times as sometimes there was no hot water and the heating came on in the middle of the night. One of the sofas (light colour) was rather uncomfortable. The lighting in the main lounge area is poor, necessitating having all the lights on all the time you are home. Even then it's poorly lit.

  • "Great find, perfect for our short stay to visit friends."

If I had to say anything it would be the long stay car park location was not obvious as no name was given in the details. There is a map in the property but it’s not labelled well. This could be made clearer! Otherwise it was a lovely place to stay and would highly recommend ☺️

  • "This is the second time our family has stayed in the Old Stables and it won't be the last."

We have family in Ruthin and we now see the Old Stables as our home in Ruthin. The house is centrally located, is comfortable and has all the amenities needed for a short stay. Rhidian is a very responsive host and answers any questions within a few hours, oftentimes sooner.

  • "The cottage was lovely, smelt free and clean when we entered."

Key and parking ticket all very clear and easy. The bathroom and kitchen were very clean, easy to use, plenty of towels, loo roll etc. Ideally it would have be nice to have had a picnic table and chairs to sit and eat together in the courtyard garden. The weather was lovely, there were already 2 seats and a table, but not enough for a family of 4. Having breakfast outside would have been lovely, thats all though. The rest was clean, cosy and welcoming.

  • "This was a generally comfortable cottage (with comfy beds) in a convenient location in Ruthin - excellent for access to Offa's Dyke."

The parking arrangements worked well. Some key aspects of the cottage were clean, such as the bathroom suite. However, other areas were quite dusty and there were many cobwebs. Some improved maintenance is needed. One of the sofas was replaced during our stay and the dishwasher didn't work at all. Rhydian was helpful to deal with and very considerate in accessing the cottage when the sofa was replaced.

However sykes cottages made the booking hard work. They messed the payment up. Booking was made difficult. And cancelled early due to the above issues.

  • "We had a lovely, comfortable and relaxed stay at the Old Stables."

We were traveling over the Christmas holidays and Rhidian and Asma decorated the house which made our family feel more at home and festive. The location is perfect if you want to explore Ruthin and the surrounding towns. Conveniences like supermarkets, chemists, parking, takeaway food, etc. are just a walk or very short car drive away. We have extended family in Ruthin and look forward to staying again when we next visit.

Many thanks for your kind words, we look forward to seeing you again soon. Rhidian & Asma Property Owner

We had an amazing stay, everything we needed was in the cottage and the owner was very supportive and helpful after we’d been let down by a different cottage provider.

  • "Mirrors need to be put in each bedroom."

3 women trying to dry their hair with no mirror really isn’t ok. Also check in & out times need to be reviewed. The price you pay for a weekend and having to be out by 1000hrs when the next person can’t check in till 1600hrs is ridiculous. As the guest we have to strip beds and leave the place immaculate, so please tell me why you require a 6 hour gap? A later check out could easily be incorporated to make your stay better, I certainly won’t be booking again with that ridiculous check out time. I will stick with Air bnb in future and because of this issue, probably won’t be recommending to friends and family or on social media.

  • "The cottage was great, it was the right size for a party of 4 adults."

The property can accommodate 5 people but this would definitely be less comfortable and sofas can only seat 4. The outside private courtyard was a lovely surprise and it was a sun trap for morning coffee. The location of the cottage is perfect for getting to Snowdonia and the north wales coast. Ruthin itself was very quiet and there was not much to do and pubs were shut, possibly as they didn't have outside space to accommodate people (due to COVID 19 rules) Had a lovely stay and would recommend the cottage to others.

The property

The Old Stables is a detached, stone-built cottage resting down a quiet backstreet in Ruthin, 100 metres from the high street.

Situated within driving distance of the Snowdonia National Park, the North Wales coast and the city of Chester, this charming cottage is an excellent touring base for families or couples.

As you enter into the open-plan living area, you will sense the character of the cottage through the exposed beams and feature fireplace; here you can sink into the sofas and enjoy a family favourite film before the designated chef of the group rustles up a delicious feast within the amply-equipped kitchen.

Make your way upstairs to reach the bedrooms, comprising two doubles and single, serviced by a smart bathroom with choice of bath and shower over.

The small enclosed courtyard provides a private spot to enjoy your morning beverage whilst browsing the day’s paper.

If you fancy a night off cooking, then a short stroll will bring you to a selection of pubs and restaurants, catering for a variety of tastes, as well as some quirky independent shops worth a browse.

For a spot of history, spend an afternoon at Ruthin Castle where you can explore the lovely gardens, ruins and woodland and admire the famous peacocks.

Walkers will be interested in exploring the long-distance Clwydian Way and the beautiful Loggerheads Country Park, both within a 20-minute drive.

If you’re a lover of the coast, then the beaches at Abergele, Rhyl and Colwyn Bay are worth a visit, but if you’re willing to travel a little further, then the popular seaside resort of Llandudno is excellent for a day out.

About the location

RUTHIN

Llangollen 12 miles; Bala 18.5 miles; Chester 25 miles; Betws-y-Coed 30 miles.

The hilltop town of Ruthin lies to the north of Llangollen via the breathtaking Horseshoe Pass. The town is picturesque with attractive half-timbered buildings, mainly clustered around St Peter’s Square. There are many interesting shops and buildings, whilst the Nant Clwyd House (the oldest timber frame in Wales), Ruthin Gaol and Ruthin Craft Centre, which houses work by internationally recognised artists and craftspeople, are also worth a visit. Beautiful countryside is on Ruthin’s doorstep with Lake Brenig, Moel Famau Country Park and Clocaenog Forest close by. Further afield, but still within easy touring distance, are the coast, Snowdonia National Park and historic Chester.
