It had everything we needed and the welcome gifts were much appreciated. It really felt as though we had got away from it all, with views of fields from the windows but less than 10 minutes' walk from the pub which was very friendly. We will definitely be back.

The property owners, Gwynfor and Eleri, could not have been more welcoming and helpful, always available if we needed to ask anything, yet not intrusive. Popty Bach has a magical feel to it, beautifully designed, tastefully and comfortably furnished, and with a lovely modern, well-equipped kitchen. We found no need to go out to restaurants to eat, though there is a local pub and in nearby Denbigh lots more pubs and eating places. We just found ourselves preferring to come back and cook in Popty Bach after a day of sightseeing, and to be enjoy the peace and quiet, and the views and sights from the cottage - it is very beautiful, sheep and cattle in the nearby fields, fabulous spacious garden and, and importantly, secure for our dog. Couldn't have wished for more! Thank you Gwynfor and Eleni.

The views are from the bedroom are amazing and the bed was so comfortable (and you do soon get used to the "dragon"). We did lots of touring, walking, cycling and sightseeing in the local area..and there are plenty of shops and amenities close by in Denbigh. Highly Recommended. • "Gorgeous little gem hidden at top of farm."

No traffic around and surrounded by fields. The owners of the property are very welcoming as was their dog, Buzz. Buzz visited daily for a little treat and a love. The garden was enclosed and great for our dog. The property is well equipped and very comfy. There is a good sized smart TV and comfy corner settee. Bed very comfy too with lovely views over the countryside. Upstairs wc was good to have and downstairs shower was great. Slight negative was the water cupboard made a very loud noise each time it refilled. (The owners did warn of this). One big negative for me was that the owners had rented the barn next to the property out to another farmer. The farmer stored his sheep in there for the whole week. The sheep kicked and cried which could be heard in the barn. This woke me on a few occasions. It was also very smelly. It's disappointing because I would have no hesitation in returning if this had not been the case. Also would have scored higher if not for this.

However the cottage is let down by the state of the bathroom. The shower head slides down the rail and will not stay in a fixed position and there is mould in the mastic around the base of the shower and in the corner by the skirting board. The hot tap on the basin drips too.We brought this up with the owner who told us to use a matchstick to keep it the shower head in position. This is all totally unacceptable and does not befit a 4 tick Sykes cottage. The bathroom needs an update. We do not live like this at home and do not expect to pay good money to holiday in a cottage with below standard bathroom facilities. I have photos to back up the above. I should like a response from Sykes please. Also there is no mention before we booked about a machine in the cupboard next to the bed that makes a roaring noise when the hot water comes on. It woke us up at 3.20 am one night and gave us a fright!

  • "We can't recommend Popty Bach highly enough, from arrival to departure the cottage just kept giving pleasure."

Jazz & Todd, our two pups are always happy to discover new places and Popty Bach was perfectly suited for them to relax after a hard days walking round the delights of North Wales (we were also grateful to return to such a cosy cottage at the end of the day, kick off the walking boots, open a bottle of wine, sit back and enjoy the sounds of nature away from the normal everyday stresses). Its central location is perfect for touring, travelling to places like Caernarfon, Llandudno, Chester, Llanberis to name just a few was easy and the views were always stunning. We can also recommend dropping by the The Old Bakery Tearoom in Henllan to enjoy some great food. Gwynfor & Eleri were extremely welcoming and it was always a joy to see Meg trotting towards us tail wagging to welcome us 'home' at the end of the day. All in all, a perfect holiday.

  • "Fantastic cottage everything inside it you could ever want, decorated and finished to a very high standard."

The garden was beautiful and fully enclosed for our two dogs (Vizslas) Nearby dog friendly local pub, all the locals made us welcome. The owners of this cottage really nice people, accessible at bottom of the lane but not intrusive. Weather was great so sat in garden every night until 9pm, blissful peaceful evenings because you feel like you are secluded. Visited many nice places all about 30 mins away. All in all a perfect holiday, in a perfect cottage. Think it will be extra cosy in there in winter with the log burner going. Can't wait to go back!

Popty Bach was clean spacious comfortable and very well equipped we loved the enclosed garden (perfect for our dogs). The king sized bed was so comfortable like falling asleep on a giant marshmallow and it was lovely opening the door to the Juliette balcony and watching the lambs frolicking in the fields beyond the garden. So many places to visit in this area Colwyn Bay Conway and Llangollen Canal to name but a few. Sure we will return to this lovely peaceful cottage soon.

  • "We have used Sykes Cottages previously and always have enjoyed the places where we have stayed, but Popty Bach excelled!"

The cottage was simply "Perfection". It was in an idyllic position, with no passing traffic, a large garden for our Italian Spinone dog. Such a peaceful place to relax and unwind, and the silence was deafening, such a change from one's everyday life. If you go there, just stand still and listen....not a sound and the sun-rise was so beautiful every morning. The cottage had lovely crockery, lovely comfortable sofa, and a king-size bed in a large bedroom with views over the surrounding fields. All the china, the blankets, the shower, the fridge-freezer were high class and smart but extremely comfortable. The owners had gone to a lot of trouble to get Popty Bach so perfect. They live nearby if you needed any advice about the area etc., but were unobtrusive, and lovely to talk to. The Inn within walking distance had lovely food and were dog-friendly, in fact everyone was so friendly too. We just loved our stay at Popty Bach, and we enjoyed a day at Old Colwyn Bay, walking along the beach, again a dog-friendly area. All in all, Popty Bach was a memorable holiday for all the right reasons. Thank you once more to the owners....and to Sykes Cottages. We would love to return!

About the location

HENLLAN

Denbigh 2.5 miles; St Asaph 5 miles.

The small North Wales village of Henllan is situated between Denbigh and the Diamond Jubilee City of St Asaph. The village offers a shop/Post Office and a pub, which serves good food. St Asaph was awarded city status in 2012 and is best known for its magnificent white cathedral. In September, the city comes alive with the arrival of the North Wales International Music festival, which takes place across numerous locations, culminating for the last few years in a television finale, broadcast from the cathedral. Nearby Denbigh dates back to the 11th century and boasts the remains of a 13th century castle, perched on a steep hill above the town, with its stunning castle walls walk and commanding some superb views over the surrounding countryside. The town is seeped in Welsh culture and boasts itself as the home of many Welsh literary giants, including 17th century poet and author, Twm o’r Nant, famous for performing his light-hearted ‘anterliwtiau’ interludes or short plays in the area, famous 19th century printer Thomas Gee who established the well-known Gee Press works in the town, and more recently home of the ‘queen of our literature’, Kate Roberts. Denbigh is a busy little town, with a variety of shops and pubs, and a number of events including walking festivals, beer festivals, the Denbigh and Flint Annual Show, the Clay Art Potters Market and a monthly People's market. Henllan is a superb touring base for discovering the sights and history of the Clwydian Range’s Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, plus the stunning lakes of Llyn Brenig and Llyn Alwen, a haven for cycling, mountain biking, walking and fishing in North Wales. You are also within easy reach of Conwy, Llandudno, Snowdonia, Angelsey and Chester.
