The cottage itself was spotless, the beds were incredibly comfortable, the property was warm and cosy. The hot tub was lovely to come home to at the end of a long day and the owners were fabulous. It really was the rest we needed - THANK YOU!!!

  • "Absolutely loved our stay at Big Hill."

A beautiful cottage with all the furnishings you could want and a great hot tub we used every day. Loved being surrounded by working farms, even had cows in the fields right next to us. They did give us strange looks in the hot tub. A large kitchen/diner with plenty of storage and all utensils you could need (inc Tassimo coffee machine) Both Tesco and Asda do delivery and Tesco only mile or so away in Ellesmere for food etc. Bedrooms both with comfy double beds and plenty of storage and 2 bathrooms. Owners very friendly and couldn’t be more helpful. If you want a quiet peaceful home away from home you must stay here. We loved our time and will definitely return.

We rated this holiday home very highly, it felt more like a home and was decorated and furnished to a high standard. It was also in an excellent location, easily one of the very best places we have stayed in.

  • "We had an enjoyable time at Big Hill Cottage."

The beds were super comfortable and the hot tub was wonderful. The house is beautifully decorated and stylish. Sadly there was no working internet during our stay!!! Hopefully this will get sorted soon. It would be even better if each bed had 2 bedside tables as hated putting my glass of water on the floor. We ended up having to purchase a cheese grater and 8 water glasses as there were hardly any.... we made the owner aware so hopefully sorted now!!!

  • "Owner was lovely and very welcoming on arrival, and thank you for the gift, all communication was sopt on from start to end."

The property had everything you needed for your stay, it was very clean and tidy and the location is great. You can walk into Ellesmere in a 20 mins stroll to explore, our Sunday lunch at the Mere Boathouse was lovely. Local Tesco nearby to top up on anything or drive into Oswestry (6 miles away) is great for shops or eating out. But if you don't want to do anything, then was our ideal place to just chill in the hot tub or garden and take in the surroundings of a working farm. We would be very happy to go back again and were sad to leave after our 4 nights with a bonus of great weather - April 21.

Very comfortable bedrooms, two bathrooms each with their own bath, beautifully decorated. Excellent all round place to stay

  • "3 friends and I stayed at this delightful cottage this week and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves."

It’s the perfect getaway and an ideal place to stay for long country walks during the day and a glass of wine by the crackling fire at night. The owners are very attentive and friendly and there’s a luxurious hot tub in the garden - BONUS! I 100% recommend and will definitely be returning myself!

  • "Lovely cottage in a beautiful setting."

Very peaceful and relaxing. Everything nearby, Shrewsbury only 30 minutes away. Very clean and comfy, only slight issue was the hot tub cuts out after 20 minutes and does not restart for an hour, this didn't take anything away from our holiday just would be nice to relax for a bit longer in there after a nice long walk. Highly recommend and would love to return.

Very friendly owners, left us wine, eggs and basics to get us started. Everything was fantastic except maybe the hot tub which a bit basic but did the trick. We had issues with the garden furniture but that should be resolved now by the owners. Tip : don't leave windows open at night or you'll get multiple wildlife coming in for breakfast. All in all, a super place to stay, car essential, lots to see and do. We would love to go back.

The property

Big Hill Cottage is a delightful, end terrace cottage set in the small hamlet of Newnes where the owners family have farmed for seven generations since 1840 near to the outskirts of Ellesmere town.

The Newnes dates back to medieval times and gets its name from when King Edward II is said to have placed some new people on the property formerly occupied by displaced Welsh Rebels.

The origin of these people is unknown, but they were referred to as the 'neow-ones' (old English Neowe = new) hence the name Newnes.

From the outset, the property oozes luxury with a delightful blend of charming features and is a perfect base for a couple’s getaway.

As you enter the cottage you are greeted to a brightly decorated hallway, boasting a striking chandelier, before stepping in to a cosy sitting room with a woodburning-effect electric fire.

Following this is an elegant snug, boasting further seating with a woodburning fire, perfect for some quiet reading.

To the rear of the room, you will find a formal dining arrangement and a well-equipped kitchen, housing a stylish design.

Follow the staircase to the first floor, where you will find two delightfully appointed bedrooms, each boasting double beds, ample storage and breath-taking views of the countryside.

Completing the floor are two luxury bathrooms, complete with a bath with shower over, basin and WC.

Outside, you will be able to enjoy a glass of wine, whilst sat in the private hot tub with overlooking views of the countryside or make the most of the morning sunshine on the front lawned area.

The town of Ellesmere can be located within a mile of the property, where you will find a good selection of pubs, restaurants and shops, to ensure you have all the necessities required.

The town also hosts a range of activities to keep you busy, from here you can take a leisurely stroll along the beautiful Mere and Ellesmere Canal.

Places of interest nearby include Chirk Castle and Aqueduct and Powys Castle.

For a good day out take a trip to Bangor Races or even Erddig Hall.

Further afield you can visit the cities of Chester and Shrewsbury for great days out.

Also don't forget Offas Dyke and Kynaston Caves at Nesscliffe to enjoy.

Big Hill Cottage is a charming cottage, perfect for a relaxing holiday to the quaint area.
