  • "On arrival the property had not been cleaned, the cottage smelt musky and there was dirty linen left in piles in the bedrooms, beds were left unmade."

The owners rectified this by cleaning the property and offered us a very small compensation as we had had to wait until 18:00 hrs to enter the property . We had been travelling all day and then had to spend 2 hrs sat in our car waiting for the property to be ready. We did not want to return to the cottage but we were refused a refund, it was very costly for 2 nights as it was the weekend of the marathon so we had no choice but to return. When we re -entered the cottage it was cold as it had been aired by opening the windows, no matches were left for the fire and the wall heater in the living room was now hanging off the wall. The heater was not rectified during our stay despite us mentioning to owners. Once cleaned the property was acceptable to stay in.

This issue (first time ever the cottage has not been cleaned, human error with calendar entry) was resolved within two hours of it being reported and the cottage was made immaculately clean, warm and welcoming. The electric heaters were on upon arrival and it wasn't a particularly cold day. We always open the windows as standard practice during cleaning. The electric heater in the lounge was fixed to the wall when I left the cottage as I switched it on at the wall and regulated the temperature. We checked this problem and realised that it was literally just a screw and wall plug that had come loose, which has been rectified. We apologise for the lack of matches to light the fire (fire regulations) however the property has two long handled gas lighters in the kitchen drawer for this purpose. We offered to pay for an evening meal for all four guests whilst they waited for the cottage to be ready however this was refused. We felt that the request of 50% of the booking fee as compensation was excessive and hoped that the compensation offered was adequate. Holiday letting is becoming increasingly more difficult in North Wales and as small business owners, we cannot be expected to give discounts at that level, especially when changeover costs for cleaning and laundry, plus electricity etc are factored in. We apologised profusely at the time for any inconvenience caused and felt that we responded in a timely and professional manner. Property Owner

  • "On arrival, first impressions were poor."

The cleanliness of the passageway to the rear entrance was not up to scratch. Although the beds and bedding were very good. Needless to say we left this property as soon as was practical. Arriving Friday evening and leaving Saturday morning. Place needs tlc.

We responded to your issues as soon as raised however you didn't give us the opportunity to personally address them. We contacted you directly and offered you a free of charge stay in our other property overlooking the sea, which you declined. We were informed that you were not interested in leaving negative feedback. You have given our lovely cottage a low score, damaging our previously good feedback score, which we work very hard to retain. We are sad that we were not given the opportunity to resolve your issues. Property Owner

  • "Beautiful cottage in a gorgeous location."

Listings were completely accurate and the accommodation had more than enough finishing touches to make us feel right at home. The cakes were very much appreciated (my partner and I are vegan but the person we were travelling with was more than happy to find a home for them

  • "Loved the cottage and amenities - log fire was amazing."

The mattress in the dual aspect bedroom had a raised bump right down the middle (unsure if this could be due to support of the bed frame) but it didn't cause any sleep disturbances. Overall we both loved the cottage, ideal location for visiting other areas by train and my son loved how close the heritage railway went by

Hi Claire. Many thanks for the good feedback, we will check out the mattress issue. Property Owner

  • "Great character cottage - we loved train spotting from the garden."

Small fridge - we struggled to fit in our food for even a few days.

Hi. Thank you for your feedback. Just to note that the cottage now has new separate fridge and a new separate freezer, providing more space for food storage. Ros and Tim. Property Owner

The property

Resting on the edge of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park in the picturesque village of Penrhyndeudraeth is this two-bedroom semi-detached quarryman's cottage, Bodorwel Cottage.

Ideal for steam engine enthusiasts, this traditional Welsh cottage was built in the late 18th century and backs onto the renowned Ffestiniog Railway.

The seating area in the garden offers a brilliant vantage point of the trains chugging past from late March to October.

The property itself is steeped in history, with part of the building enjoying a stone-built exterior and dating back to 1851.

You'll notice this as you park up in the roadside parking space, before taking in the rest of the delightful surroundings, including views of Foel Penolau.

Make your way inside and hang your things up in the hallway, before being welcomed by a sitting room brimming with charm, thanks to its plush furnishings and train memorabilia peppered throughout; kick back and relax on the seating and enjoy a show on the Smart TV, all the while being warmed by the flames of the woodburning stove.

Continue through to the kitchen/diner, a traditional space which offers plenty of appliances to make mouth-watering meals with, including an electric cooker.

Once these tasty dishes have been made, enjoy them at the corner table, or take them outside to the garden, where you can watch the steam trains go by as you dine alfresco.

As the day winds to a close, climb the stairs to find two lovely double bedrooms, one of which enjoys views over the rooftops and towards the mountains, whilst the other features dual aspect windows, with views out to the garden.

The shower room is nearby and is where you can enjoy an invigorating rinse before heading out to explore the area.

Head into the centre of Penrhyndeudraeth, where all your amenities can be found, including a convenience store and a range of eateries, such as The Eating Gorilla; the town is also home to the Gwaith Powdwr North Wales Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve, where plenty of walking and birdwatching can be enjoyed.

Travel towards the coast and visit Porthmadog, where you can actually board the Ffestiniog Railway and run through Eryri's (Snowdonia's) enchanting scenery or stay in the town to explore the Maritime Museum, the idyllic harbour and the nearby sands of Borth y Gest.

Be sure to pay the Italianate village of Portmeirion, a place that is well-known for its vibrant and gorgeous architecture, along with walks spanning along the coast and a range of independent shops.

Spend some time in Blaenau Ffestiniog, where direct access to the National Park's outdoor havens as well as the fantastic Zip World Llechwedd can be found.

With so much to see and do nearby, Bodorwel Cottage is a fantastic stay for you and your loved ones.
