  • "Had a wonderful 2 night stay in Little Cow House, on arrival we were greeted and shown around."

We had booked for a birthday getaway, and the owner had put our a birthday cake, chocolates and a bottle of wine, which was a wonderful surprise. The cottage was spotless and the fire had been put on for our arrival, it was very cosy and a lovely homely place. Owners were wonderful, really helped when we asked for local restaurants/pubs and made us feel very welcome. The beds were very comfy, peaceful area at night and lovely to wake up to the birds & river. We had a fabulous stay, and certainly wouldn't hesitate booking again.

We were greeted shown around and left with a lovely cake and wine...... both went down very well! My little boy is 5 and particularly loved the wide range of toys (hidden away nicely) to play with. We were staying following a leak at our property locally, so didn't do any tourist activities but the home was a great base for us, very comfortable. Would highly recommend friends and family to stay here if visiting the area. Thank-you for a lovely week.

The barn conversion is of the highest quality with all of the furnishings and fittings being of a high standard. The owners are friendly and helpful if required. The weather was fine and we were able to enjoy the private outside terrace and garden, overlooking the Ceiriog valley. The location is perfect - a rural setting but with lots of walks, shops and restaurant/pub options within easy range. An area and cottage that we would return to. First class!

Lovely arrival cake, which was a nice touch. However the kitchen needs a re-think of space usage as it was cramped around the table with 5 adults. Also ironing board? Lovely modern washing machine but with a small travel table top ironing board? Also lack of wardrobe in single room. Still these aspects did not spoil a lovely break but would have added to overall experience.

  • "We found Little Cow Cottage for a last minute booking."

It's so lovely that I was amazed that it was available! It's in a beautiful setting overlooking the bridge and river at Pontfaen, is spotlessly clean, warm, bright and comfortable. Heather and Tom are very welcoming. There are good walks from the cottage and many more including strolls along canal towpaths and strenuous hill walks a short drive away. We mainly chose to eat in house but can recommend the Swan a short drive up the valley. Stan's independent superstore in St Martins is a short drive away while the small farm shop at the trout farm up the road is worth a visit. What's not to like?! Thank you for having us.

  • "A long weekend at Little Cow House just wasn’t enough."

From the warm welcome from the owners and first look around the house we knew we’d booked somewhere special. By the end of our stay, nothing had disappointed us, the Chirk and Llangollen area is beautiful and it was so nice to come back to Little Cow House at the end of each day of walking and exploring. It’s warm, spotlessly clean, equipped and furnished to a very high standard. We’re three friends meeting up somewhere new every few months and we all agreed this was our best accommodation to date, definitely somewhere we’d like to stay again. Having an ensuite bathroom and house bathroom is a big plus when you’re sharing the house with friends, the large sitting room with plenty of comfy chairs and lovely views across the valley enables you to spread out too, very spacious. The 5 stars are well-deserved and the Sykes team should be proud to list this holiday cottage on their website.

Plenty of space for 5, including a well equipped kitchen and soacioys lounge. It was very clean and everything was well maintained with quality furnishings. There is a lovely outlook to the rear over the river Ceiriog. The owners left a Victoria sponge cake, a bottle of wine, milk and some malteasers, which was very thoughtful. We would definitely consider staying there again although if we were being picky, we didn't find the mattresses in the double rooms very comfortable. Whether they need replacing or are just too soft for us, we couldn't tell.

If I had to pick one thing I'd change, I'd ask how to use the underfloor heating as, with it throughout the whole house we did sometimes get too warm, but that's definitely better than being cold so it's certainly not a complaint! We spent 3 nights here and wish we'd booked longer- we will definitely be back!!!

  • "Tom and Heather Hughes were brilliant hosts and both welcomed us on arrival."

They gave us loads of ideas for places to go and things to do; Heather actually gave us one of her home made cakes to take on a picnic. The house itself was immaculate; everything you could want really. The conversion from farm building to holiday cottage has been carefully and tastefully done with great attention to detail. Kitchen was well equipped, bright and airy. The lounge was very comfortable with a double recliner settee which I loved. French doors opened onto a beautiful outdoor area with magnificent views down and across the valley. Beds were extremely comfortable and the bathroom was quite something with its freestanding bath and simple, tasteful decor. The en suite was more than adequate with an excellent shower cubicle. Tom and Heather are truly lovely people, more like friends really but never intrusive and always helpful. I would recommend this house to any family wanting a very clean, comfortable almost luxurious place to stay and also a great base to tour north Wales.

  • "Our best holiday cottage mini break."

Everything was fantastic, a very warm welcome from the owners (who live in the farmhouse on site). They very kindly provided us with lots of very thoughtful goodies - a lovely touch to start our holiday. The property is a fabulous cottage that is brimming with quality fittings and furnishings. Everything about the cottage is great - the stunning views - the beds & bedding - beautiful bathrooms - the outdoor space - the fact you can park at the door - the comfort of the lounge & fully equipped kitchen. The cottage is situated near Chirk village which has the fantastic castle bistro, well worth a visit. A few miles further on is Llangollen,There is lots to see and do in the area - canal boat trips, lots of walks, steam trains, the truly amazing aqueduct & the beautiful horseshoe falls. We went to Lake Bala then on to the white water rafting centre, Its a lovely walk up to the dam while watching the rafts and canoes hurtle down the river. We would recommend this cottage without hesitation. Perfect!!

  • "The welcome was as warm as the weather was cold."

The cottage was easy to find, beautifully warm, comfortable and welcoming and awaiting us inside was the best bara brith we had ever tasted and a lovely welcome pack. Where else could you stay in Shropshire, look across to Wales (about 100 yards away), look left down one of the most beautiful valleys in Wales, and right to see a World Heritage site. There is so much to see in the area, whether you travel by car or just walk from the cottage. We managed to see about 25% of what we had intended so going back will be a certainty. The owners were a wealth on knowledge about the area and the complex history of the region, They were friendly, always available if needed, and nothing was too much trouble for them. We will return with certaint

  • "The cottage was perfect."

Clean, beautifully decorated and with all the facilities you could need. We loved the reclining chairs in the living room and a dishwasher so we didn't have to wash up! The huge bath was a bonus too and the underfloor heating meant it was always nice and warm. The owners were very welcoming and helpful, offering us advice on what to do in the area. We would definitely recommend this cottage to anyone.

The small border town of Chirk (Welsh spelling: Y Waun) stands on the escarpment above where the rivers Ceiriog and Dee meet, and is referred to as The Gateway to Wales. Most famous for its magnificent 14th century castle and gardens, one of many built throughout Wales by Edward I, Chirk boasts a wonderful aqueduct, designed by Thomas Telford, a selection of pleasant pubs and restaurants, convenience stores, chemist, gift shop, coffee shops, local butcher's, greengrocers, bakery, an excellent golf course and marina. The surrounding area, notably the beautiful Ceiriog Valley described by Lloyd George as “a little bit of heaven on Earth”, provides wonderful walks and cycling, including the famous Offa's Dyke Pathway, and local trout fishing. Only five miles from charming Llangollen, with its stream railway, watersports, famous Eisteddfod, Castell Dinas Bran, Valle Crucis Abbey and scenic Horseshoe Pass. Also five miles is the market town of Oswestry with its iron age hillfort, and within easy reach is the Roman walled city of Chester with its famous zoo and the medieval town of Shrewsbury, both only half an hour by train or car from Chirk.
