  • "I can honestly say The Old School is one of the loveliest places we have stayed."

Spacious, warm and homely with everything you could possibly need. I couldn't recommend highly enough. The Old School is the perfect place for a family holiday in beautiful surroundings. Thank you for a very special Christmas, the decorations looked lovely.

  • "We really enjoyed our stay at The Old School."

Spacious property, well-equipped and quiet surroundings. Comfortable beds. We took a steep walk up the hill from the house to see the Osprey nest. Stunning views all around. About 5-10 minutes drive into Portmadog. Lots to see and do within short driving distance. Would definitely return.

We had a great stay at Yr Hen Ysgol, It is in a brilliant location with loads to do in the surrounding area. The House was really nice, clean and spacious with good entertainment facilities, loads of room for the kids to play. The owners are lovely, they contacted us with good tips about local highlights, and gave great advice about directions and parking.

  • "Having recently stayed at Yr Hen Ysgol, we'd have no hesitation in recommending the accommodation to any others thinking of staying in the area."

We know the area very well, having had close family living in the area, in fact across the valley in Rhyd, as well as family connections to Portmeirion and nearby Plas Brondanw. The accommodation was exactly as advertised, very well appointed with plenty of kitchen equipment, crockery and glasses. The information provided beforehand and whilst at the property meant everything was easily found and used. It was a delight to leave upstairs rooflight (velux) windows open to listen to the birds. The peace and quiet was really noticeable and appreciated. Make sure you follow the lane up from the cottage through to the Porthmadog-Caernarfon road as well as to the lake at Llyn Cwmystradllyn. The lane is very quiet and gives superb views over Cardigan Bay and the Lleyn Peninsula. Just above the tree line only a 10 min walk from the property, we spotted an osprey nest which complements the two in the bottom of the valley visible from the Glaslyn Osprey visitors centre which is well worth a visit. We'll be keen to head back to this property as soon as we're able and is sure to become our preferred choice on our annual visits to the area. If you want peace and quiet in a very comfortable environment within reach of all the attractions in the area as well as being situated in stunning countryside, this is the place for you!

  • "A gem. We absolutely adored our stay in this property, nestled in the hillside of the village of Prentag."

The house was perfect for our 3-generation group with everything we needed and more. I took oven gloves, as per previous review, but didn’t need anything else that I had packed for the kitchen. A wonderful location, close to attractions, giving us something different to do every day, before coming back to relax in this beautiful former school.

  • "We had a really lovely stay at Yr Hen Ysgol - the accommodation and location were both great."

The cottage is well equipped with everything you need for entertainment and cooking, bedrooms were all of a good standard. It definitely felt like a home from home and Suzanne was really responsive to any queries we had. The only things to note are that the ensuite is not massively comfortable to use (very small) and shower pressure could have been a bit better. But, even with those in mind, it was definitely one of the best holiday rentals I've stayed in and wouldn't hesitate to book again - we're hoping to return at some point soon!

Felt like home very relaxing property to stay. Once we mastered the parking, no problems, follow the advice given. A little knowledge is dangerous! Only negative the en suite is a bit small. But we used it ok. Bathroom lovely. Already thinking of returning next year.

  • "Our three-generation party of seven thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this well-appointed, unique accommodation."

Slate everywhere. The small signs in each room indicated its previous use during old school days. Even though the week was one of the warmest this summer, the house kept reasonably cool. The hill was not a problem, neither was parking. Its location is perfect for exploring the region. Restaurants in nearby Tremadog are highly recommended, especially Y Sgwar.

  • "Lovely spacious cottage that had been thoughtfully restored, very well equipped with bountiful amounts of towels and bedding."

Kitchen utensils, dishes etc plentiful. Location was lovely and quiet. Only minor drawback was although there were plenty of mirrors in the house, you had to be pretty tall to see in the ones in the bathroom and en suite, and the mirror in the bedroom with the en suite was over the bed so not much good for applying make up etc. Finally, a nice addition would have been was a " fresh " welcome pack, with fresh bread and milk and a few local welsh products.

  • "The property was exceptional in the provision of equipment and furnishings and general quality of all fittings etc."

The owners provided generous and thoughtful "extras" which were a delightful surprise on arrival. There were two snags which were not evident in the information we had prior to booking and initial payment ... 1. The approach to the property is extremely difficult (very steep and narrow and twisting road) 2. The ensuite shower room is much too narrow ... there is not nearly enough space between the toilet and the wall.

Not lock on under sink cupboards and bleach etc left on floor. Good to have a lobby for footwear and coats as it rained a bit! Bedrooms smaller than expected and bathrooms but downstairs loo very useful. Great spot to get to places and parking satisfactory. Wasn’t quite sure if our clean was the only one as several things not clean when we arrived eg filter in tumble dryer . Some pans were rather past it and knives were rather large for many tasks. Garden only used once as slate chipping not very child friendly. A closer on gates would have been good. Table for sitting out would have been used if we hadn’t had small people with us.Beds and sofas comfortable and kitchen well equipped. We appreciated dishwasher tablets etc in house. Fascinating building!

Brilliant Wi-Fi worked even on the terrace, was able to watch some of the Euros 2020 outside on my laptop as the weather was so good. Wasn't ready to come home. Could have stayed another week. kitchen was really stocked well. Options for wine and bubbles. an abundance of cutlery. Made for a great and functional kitchen. Lounging options were also great--two separate rooms! meant we could have a TV group and a sit-by-the-fire group in total harmony. There was very little to pick at and we we're a bunch of architecture snobs! Exceptionally well done. Impressed a very tough crowd.

With the medieval castles at nearby Criccieth, Harlech and Caernarfon and a host of excellent walking and cycling opportunities within easy reach, this is an ideal location for enjoying all that Snowdonia and the Llyn Peninsula have to offer. Several beautiful sandy beaches can be found within a 10-20 minute drive. Harlech beach where the golden sands are 4 miles long, backed by a fantastic dune system and one of North Wales’ best golf courses (Royal St David’s), Borth-y-Gest, a hidden gem, Shell Island, Black Rock Sands, and we can’t forget Porthdinllaen, where a walk around the picturesque peninsula takes you to the Ty Coch Inn on the beach, rated one of the top 10 best beach bars in the world.
