  • "When I read the guest book on my first evening at Gwdihw, I noticed that many of the entries were from guests who had stayed there multiple times and others saying that they would come back."

It didn't take me long to realise why, the cottage was comfortable and very well equipped, the location peaceful, the owners Ian and Bethan very friendly and helpful and as for the welcome 'basket' a real treat! There are so many places to visit and things to do in relatively close proximity that perhaps a week wasn't long enough. I would certainly book Gwidhw again and recommend it to friends if they were thinking of holidaying in 'that part of the world'

Thank you for your kind words. It was lovely to meet you. Your gardening knowledge also came in useful. You are very welcome to return . Property Owner

Surprisingly spacious with low sloping ceilings upstairs. Nicely furnished, decorated and accessorised. Beds were comfy. No phone signal but wifi is OK. Great location to explore the region. We went from Powys to Chester and a lot in between. It is a truly beautiful area.

It's right in the countryside with lovely views, peace and quiet. Ian and Bethan were very welcoming and nearby if needed. It was really cold outside but the central heating and electric fire kept us warm and cosy. However, we missed reliable internet access as we needed to stay in touch with a family member but this would not be an issue for everyone wishing to stay.

  • "We had a great holiday in the cottage."

It is in a very peaceful location, but still close to lots of amenities (petrol station, supermarket etc). The owners Ian and Bethan are friendly and helpful, without being intrusive, and left a lovely welcome basket which we appreciated, as well as milk and butter in the fridge. The cottage is well appointed, tastefully decorated and the beds very comfortable. My two daughters (13 and 8) enjoyed the large Disney DVD collection and I liked the home/antique magazines! The WiFi worked well, but there is no mobile phone reception...not a problem for us as it added to the peaceful ambience, but might be for some. The canal is 10 minutes walk across fields from the cottage, which was nice for an after-dinner stroll. We also visited Chirk Castle and Chirk Aqueduct, both within 20 mins drive from the cottage. The tunnel at Chirk Aqueduct was a particular highlight for the children, but take your torches! N.B. One of the reviews mentioned the rough track leading to the cottage might be a problem for cars with low clearance. It is a bit muddy and wet, but our car had no trouble and it is quite low.

Lovely wildlife around the cottage including squirrels, rabbits, pheasant and lots of birds. Neighbour is the owner but far enough away not to be intrusive. I travelled alone for part of my holiday so advice from owner about where to go for walking and cycling was very welcome as well as knowing they were just next door. Cottage had absolutely everything I could wish for...I brought a few items along myself but cottage had everything. A very lovely welcome pack...also wonderful after quite a long journey. The cottage interior setup is exactly as described. I would definately return.

  • "This is a lovely cottage in a very peaceful location with plenty of 'wildlife' - rabbits, squirrels and (for us) 15 bird species."

Feeding the pheasant and squirrels added to the fun. There are plenty of nature reserves to visit so it was easy to maintain distance from other people. Gobowen (2 miles away) has a good little co-op, a post office and several takeaways. We had plenty of room but tall/large people will need to be aware of the sloping ceilings upstairs. They were not a problem for us (average heights). I noted a comment earlier about the bathroom but we did not find it to be a problem - in fact I thought it was quite spacious. Ian and Beth were ideal 'hosts' - available but not intrusive and Ian was very helpful in disposing of our many cardboard boxes from our medical supplies ("Thank you, Ian"). No EE phone reception but that was nice! Happy to recommend - just please don't book it when we want to go there next time!!

  • "This is a perfect cottage if you like ‘being away from it all’ - its tucked down some pretty country lanes, has zero passing traffic, and the only sound you’ll hear in this tranquil location are birds and sheep!"

! It’s also in a great place for walks along the nearby canal. It is comfortable, cosy and generally well-equipped and furnished. The hosts were welcoming and supplied a delightful selection of goodies on arrival. We felt the only disappointment was the bathroom, being somewhat of a squeeze, tucked in under low ceilings, making the shower very difficult to manoeuvre in and the basin almost impossible to use at all. Such a same as the utility room was huge and could easily have accommodated a wc and/or shower. Whilst there’s mention on the Sykes website of ‘cottage approached down an unmade track’ - it is worth noting that this rough, rutted track (whilst only short) would be tricky to negotiate in a vehicle with low clearance. Overall we had a great week and would highly recommend this cottage.

The property was spotlessly clean, had everything we could need (including good internet access) and was very comfortable and cosy. Despite Wales being out-of-bounds, we were still able to find lots to do in the surrounding area. There is a lovely walk along the canal (accessible from the property), Derwen College, Attingham and Park Hall Countryside Experience were all worth a visit. We will definitely look to return to take advantage of the Welsh offerings when we can.

You really don't even need to leave the property to have a lovely stay as you will be entertained by the squirrels & rabbits as well as a variety of garden birds; you may even hear the owls at night. There are walks straight from the door and several more beautiful hill walks about 20 minutes drive away. Ian & Beth are excellent hosts, offering a warm welcome on arrival &, throughout my stay, discretely ensuring I was enjoying myself, which I was. It is placed perfectly for visiting the many National Trust properties in the area, then there are towns like Chester and Wrexham which are both extremely interesting and worth a visit as is Shrewsbury. The industrial heritage is also the almost on the doorstep with the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct only a short drive from the cottage. The local town of Oswestry has a selection of good supermarkets as does the local village of St Martins with plenty of choices for eating out or a takeaway from Gobowen.
