  • "One of our dogs was poisoned by fibreglass insulation in the garden of this cottage as there was loads of it lying around."

He needed emergency vet treatment and nearly died. Sykes cottages do not want to know and have not responded to any of my complaints. When we arrived, the flat was cold and felt damp. We looked around and saw lots of dirt, dust and mixed dog hairs everywhere. We worked out how to turn the heating on to warm the place and set about unpacking our belonging, however on closer inspection we found the cupboards to be really dirty so we kept our belongings in our suitcases and lived out of them for the entire stay. On the first night my son awoke in the middle of the night having an asthma attack, he is asthmatic but haven't had an attack like that for a long time so we were confused as to what caused it. He continued to have asthma attacks for the duration of our stay. Thank god we had his medication. The next morning, we looked around and saw how dirty and dusty the room he slept in was so realised that it must’ve been this that had set his asthma attack off. We cleaned his room ourselves to make it less dusty for him. On the second day that we were there, one of our dogs (cavapoo) became quite ill, he stopped eating, was vomiting very aggressively and was not himself. All through the night he kept vomiting and being sick, he hadn’t eaten any food and hadn’t passed urine or pooped. By the Sunday morning he was so lethargic and sick that we had to seek an emergency vet who confirmed that he was poisoned. It was touch and go and we were told to prepare ourselves as the vet wasn't sure he would make it through the night. The next day it was confirmed that he had eaten fibreglass insulation. We went home and for the next two days and nursed and looked after our dog who was completely lethargic and just laid still on the sofa for the next few days. We had to syringe feed him water and give him pills to help his stomach. The day after he became ill, my husband had a good look around the garden to inspect it and to determine where he could have gotten the fibreglass insulation from that cause his sudden illness and found there were loads of pieces of fibreglass insulation all around the garden and decking area. He picked each piece up and disposed of it correctly. We informed the owner of what was happening and her response was “sorry i don’t know what that is” The next day i expected her to be in touch to enquire how our dog was doing but we heard nothing more. Throughout his five day illness, the owner Gill did not reach out to ask if he was ok or showed no concern. Our dog finally started being a bit better on the 6th day that we were there and whilst we are extremely happy and completely relieved that he survived, we basically spent the entire holiday in the flat nursing our sick dog back to health. On our final day there, my husband went for a shower and when he tried to come out of the bathroom, he found he could not get out and was locked in. We tried everything to get him out but did not have any tools to turn the outside lock. We phoned the owner who came with a screwdriver and opened the door. My husband suffers with anxiety and had a massive panic attack whilst being stuck in the bathroom. Once the owner had opened the door, she proceeded to take the screwdriver and started to take the entire handle and lock off the bathroom door whilst my husband stood in the bathroom with just a towel around him. She spent about half an hour trying to get the lock off and in the end decided that she couldn’t so she left it as she found the lock was bent which caused it to jam hence why my husband became locked in. She then phoned someone and made arrangements for them to come the next day to do it after we checked out. I have no idea why she started to try and take the lock off the door because once she took the screwdriver and unlocked it and freed my husband, we expected her to leave. However this was not the case. She then had a phone call and left quite suddenly leaving the front door wide open and a bathroom door with a handle and lock hanging off that now couldn't close at all. Which in turn left us with no privacy from each other. Overall the holiday was a disaster, the place was dusty and disgustingly dirty. I am now seeking legal advice as sykes cottages have not responded to any of my complaints.

I’m shocked by your review. As is evident by my other reviews; I have an excellent reputation, obtaining 5 STAR accreditation. You say the flat was cold, felt damp and had dirt, dust and mixed dog hairs everywhere = the last dog I had staying in my flat was = 5 months ago. The flat is a modern, well insulated ground floor flat, I ensure the thermostat is 18 degrees before visitors arrive. It is not damp, following your stay there was some evidence of condensation on your bedroom window ledge. This was caused by you not ventilating the room. The last 2 sets of visitors did not cause any condensation. You found the cupboards really dirty – there are no cupboards !!! There is open railing to hang your clothes on and open shelving with white ventilated plastic basket. This can be proved if you look at the photos on the Sykes site. This review is the first time, I have heard you complaining of the flats cleanliness. I’m sorry your Son had an Asthmatic episode, again this review is the first time I became aware of your son being poorly. This is a small 2 bedroomed flat, you came with 2 dogs a cavapoo and a Labrador- which is a breed known for shedding dog hair. I certainly cleaned up a lot of Labrador type hair following your stay. Maybe being in a small confined space with a lot of dog hairs in the atmosphere, could have contributed to your son’s condition. The bedroom he stayed in, contained very little furniture and is not a dusty room. Let me write down, word for word, , the whole text conversation we had about your dog being sick, I have a safely stored, photographic records of all our phone calls and texts. Me (Monday 12th Feb 17.52hrs) = “ I don’t know what this is sorry has it blown into the garden? So sorry I haven’t had any insulation work done to the flat so I don’t know where it has come from- so sorry I hope your dog is ok – I will certainly check the garden – please let me know how your little dog is Regards Gill “ Your reply – word for word – exactly as you wrote it = “ I’m not sure to be honest because we did check the garden when we got here to make sure it was safe.. so it could have blown over from elsewhere.. thankfully he’s doing better this evening and will make a full recovery.” – this was on Monday 12th February. My reply “ so relieved he’s ok “ this was the end of the conversation, all on Monday 12th February. We’d had a lot of storms during this period, which causing a lot of wind, as we are on the coast. When your husband was locked in the toilet - I responded with a text after 3 minutes saying “I’m on my way” , I live 9 minutes away. I released him immediately, he then went straight into the kitchen, he was fully clothed ! I did try to get the mechanism out to repair it , unfortunately I could not do this. I clearly explained, I couldn’t get if fixed in till tomorrow and asked you, if it would you be ok with the door not locking. You said yes, as there was only the 3 of you in the flat. We then had a conversation about dog walks, you said you’d taken both dogs on Bryn Eirin a mountain walk nearby and asked me, if I knew any river/ forest walks. I suggested Aber Falls, your husband & I then studied the location on his phone. When I arrived home, I text you with another walk in Betws y Coed, I’d thought may be suitable. I have this text on record, which proves this conversation took place. I am an honest descent person, trusted in the community having run a Post Office and Convenience shop and also worked as a Community Midwife and District Nurse for 32 years. The insinuation that any of these claims are true is extremely hurtful and offensive to me. I am sorry you did not enjoy your stay and felt it necessary to write such a review. I hope people reading this review; will also consider all my 5 star reviews; in order to obtain a clearer picture of what the actual truth is. Property Owner

  • "Our second stay at The Orchard, two adults and two young children."

The flat is compact but very well equipped with excellent facilities - the owner has obviously invested a lot of time into ensuring everything is provided for a comfortable stay. The kitchen is wonderful with high quality appliances which really makes a difference when you are self catering. The beds and sofas are very comfortable and the shower is hot and powerful - excellent bath towels too. It was great to have a proper clothes airer. The flat is warm and has been decorated with attention to detail in a seaside theme which adds to the holiday feel of the place. The only issue we had was noise from the flat above on the first two nights of our stay a loud washing machine and TV disturbed us until nearly 2am in the morning. Obviously this is beyond the owner's control and we are quite sensitive to noise so this probably wouldn't be an issue for most people. The owner is helpful and approachable and has left a great folder of information as well as comprehensive contact details. Rhos is a fantastic place to stay with a young family, located within easy reach of Conwy and Llandudno as well as many other attractions and the local bus services are great. The flat is located only a 5-10 minute walk from all shops and the beautiful sea front which has a great little play area, reasonably priced cafes and crazy golf. Fabulous fish and chip shop also nearby open for lunch and tea - good kids menu which is big enough for adults too. Well stocked and friendly pharmacies and supermarkets are minutes away on foot or by car. Overall a great place to stay and we would happily return again - thanks to the owner for making us welcome with a travel cot and highchair and little touches like tea making supplies and cakes, your hard work is much appreciated by guests.

It was comfortable on both warm and cooler days. All essential facilities were provided and thoughtful attention to detail - a cosy throw for the sofa, thick towels, and cushions on the beds. Even the cupboards emitted a pleasant smell when opened - I would love to know what the owner uses to clean them to achieve that! Perfectly located for Rhos on Sea beach, a local restaurant within easy walking distance, and shorr drive to Llandudno. Highly recommended.

Thank you I’m really pleased you enjoyed your stay. Rhos on Sea now has probably the best beach in the area & great cafes & restaurants I use a Zoflora disinfectant spray on everything. It’s an old fashioned product but a great one . Property Owner

This was our second visit to this property and we will consider coming back in the future. Clean, contemporary, excellent off road parking in front of the property. Great for a stay any time of year - the central heating system and additional electric stove effect heater in the living area made the flat boiling! We of course turned it all down when we got too hot but you certainly won’t be cold here! We love the fact this flat is in a pleasant, modern cul-de-sac (sort of) which is quite private and has great parking. The seafront down at Rhos-on-Sea is an easy 12 minute walk. There are lovely places to eat and drink within walking distance, even in the middle of winter. We had a fantastic New Year’s Eve celebrating at The Angler’s bar - amazing. Great, friendly, lively and beautiful town. We will certainly be back.

Sheets, towels etc clean and soft.

I’m very sorry you found the double bed broken and the toilet door was faulty. The first I knew of this was after you had left the property. I provided my phone number in the information folder in the flat and I also in the welcome text, which I see you received, prior to arriving at the property. I really wish you had let me know you had these problems, as soon as they occurred; so I could have acted immediately and solved them. I am on vacation but within an hour of me receiving your text my cousin and husband called at the flat to fix the problems. However, all they could do was tighten up the bolts on the bed as a precaution, as the bed was not broken and the bathroom door was working perfectly. It is all a bit of a mystery.?? Apologies but I do not know what happened !!! I provide all my visitors with the welcome text, which I did send to you; it explains “The street is easy to drive past !!! Look for a block of cream flats & turn in there. Number 10 is right at the bottom. You will see number 11, go to the side of the building and you will find the entrance to number 10 .” Also the child’s bed, as explained in the details is a smaller 5 foot size. It is a sofa bed I will ask Sykes to add this description. I clean the flat personally and do genuinely pride myself on the standard of cleanliness II have had excellent comments on the cleanliness of the flat up to your review. So I have to strongly disagree on your comment. Regarding the WiFi , I also received a comment in May 2022 that the WiFi worked well - so I haven’t worried about it too much Again I have to disagree on your comment. . Thank you for the feedback on my, standard sized mugs. I will provide some tea cup size mugs ASAP . I genuinely work hard and do my best for all my visitors.
