  • "What an amazing location/views and an absolutely lovely cottage!"

Thanks so much to Rob and Debbie for going out of their way to get our WIFI and TV fixed (through no fault of theirs) during our stay, and for their kindness and hospitality in making us feel welcomed and looked after. I've been coming to Snowdonia for over 25 years and love it, and I have stayed in many holiday cottages over this time but few I would return to if I'm honest...however 19 Cwmorthin Road is not one of them and I will definitely be returning as often as I can afford!! Brilliant location with lots of mountains, rivers, waterfalls, lakes and slate quarries to explore - all from the front door. The cottage is clean, lovely kitchen, and bathroom and bedrooms are perfect. The only suggestion I would have is to reinstate the cottage handbook, to help with how to use equipment, recycling, etc., however Rob did mention that it is currently being updated. Wonderful place to stay both in terms of location, and the cottage itself and its reasonably priced too!! Thanks Rob & Debbie x

  • "This cottage is amazing."

The location is perfect - you can stand at the kitchen sink and look directly out into the mountains. As soon as we stepped out of the front door we had a choice of several different walks to go on. Strike upwards for the mountain or the upper Stiwnog reservoir, or down to the lower reservoir or into Blaenau Ffestiniog, we did both. We also had a kickabout on the school football pitch at the bottom of the hill. The cottage itself feels fresh and light. There is a modern kitchen with a huge window letting in tons of light separated by a door from a very comfortable sitting room and a log burner set in a fireplace with tons of character. Lots of room in the fireplace to store all the logs we needed for the evening so no need to go anywhere once we had settled down. The bathroom was clean and fresh with a modern finish and another fab view of the mountain. The bedrooms are clean and comfortable. They both have wardrobes so there was plenty of storage for our clothes and space to stow the suitcases. To cap it off there is a shallow feeder pool for the reservoir about 100m away from the cottage that is perfect for skimming stones and paddling in. We spent a few hours there on our way back to the cottage when our son wasn’t quite ready to go home yet. We had a super relaxing stay and really enjoyed our time here. Thanks.

There was a feather down quilt on the bed for any allergy sufferers this is a no no. There were a few minor issues in the kitchen such as there wasn't a colinder for draining food, because of the glorious weather we've had lately it would pay to put some blinds up the kitchen windows. The biggest issue we had was there was no hot water for the 1st 2 days then when the plumber came out to the property we had to wait in which we didn't mind so much if it was going to sort the problem out but it didn't, the water still wasn't hot & the actual water pressure wasn't much more than a dribble. I spoke to the owner on a couple of occasions but after the second visit by the plumber the water pressure was still the same so we just put up with it. & decided to leave the property & return home a day early. On the plus side the actual location was perfect for peace & quiet, some excellent walks & a view out of the double kitchen doors we just couldn't get enough of.

Thanks for the feedback, sorry you had problems with the water, the system has now been completely changed to a pressurised system. Property Owner

  • "If ever a cottage has had the owner's love poured into it, then this must rank amongst the very highest."

Not much to look at from the outside (let's face it, it's only an old miners cottage), but from the moment you open the door, you can't help but be impressed (well, we were anyway!). A small hall (with laminate flooring for dirty boots) leading to a really comfortable lounge with a large sofa and a most welcome solid fuel stove (yes, even in July; it was great!). A nice solid wood sideboard supporting a suitably large Panasonic TV with freeview box - nothing cheap here. There is also an expanding solid wood dining table and four dining chairs. I would guess that the downstairs was once two rather cramped rooms that have been knocked into one - a good idea which works well. The kitchen has therefore been added an a full-width extension to the rear, and what a kitchen it is, with top notch appliances and both a dishwasher AND washing machine. Upstairs has a large full-width double bedroom to the front and a smaller single bedroom and bathroom to the rear. All very sensible and satisfactory. Previous feedback has mentioned that the hot water is miserable and yes, it is rather slow. It gets there, but with no head from the cold water tank, it just takes its time! The owner has agreed that this is not ideal and will be converting this to a full mains-pressure tank shortly (he only finished the conversion in May this year, so give him a chance!). I'm sure he will update his description accordingly. On the plus side, the shower is really good and the dishwasher works - what else do you need hot water for?! So, if this is the only gripe, PLEASE do not let this put you off. As others testify, the location is quiet yet accessible and the view from the garden is just lovely- remote and romantic. It just remains for me to say thank you for allowing us to have our holiday here - we can't wait to come back. Robert & Tamzin

  • "We did enjoy our stay at 19 Cwmorthin Rd and it was much as we had hoped for."

Loved the view from the kitchen and of a generous size that made preparing suppers a joy. For the most part we discovered all the switches for this and that to work and the heating was very cosy, but never did discover how we were to get general hot water through the taps in the kitchen and bathroom and coped without it. The shower was fine but took time to get accustomed to; no two showers are ever the same! A great base for our trips as we managed days out to Conwy, to Anglesey and finally the hill climb to the top of Moelwyn Mawr for which the property is ideal as a starting point. For any who take a full look at the property be aware that the one parking space is directly out of the front door in a small space there and NOT at the adjacent terrace end. One issue I would leave with Sykes is that I felt that the two pages of instructions in the folder could really be expanded a little, to give a fuller description of the workings of the property: this would definitely include a description of the local council recycling instructions with which I would happily have complied had I but known the rules laid down! Even the green bin, seen outside every other property along Cwmorthin Road, was seemingly being used for storage and not available for general rubbish; this did leave me scratching my head as to how best dispose of our gathered waste at the end of our stay.

The property

A wonderful end of terrace, stone-built cottage resting in an elevated position amidst the traditional village of Tanygrisiau which has just been granted UNESCO world heritage status.

With plenty of walks from the doorstep and fabulous views over the Moelwyn mountain range, this retreat is well-suited for a romantic break, or those looking for a sense of adventure.

The ground floor is home to an entrance hallway, which continues through to a pretty lounge featuring an elegant sofa, woodburning stove and dining for four people.

Take a step down to the modern kitchen, here you can prepare those home cooked meals amongst the dramatic mountain landscape which almost follows you around.

Open up the French doors and stroll outside to be at one with it all, a lovely place to relax and take in the natural scenery, while enjoying the soothing sounds of the waterfall.

Take the stairs to the next floor where you will find an all-white bathroom containing an overhead shower, with a Velux window overseeing the formation.

Two bedrooms promise a good nights sleep; the first is presented as a double, complemented by front-facing views and chandeliers which uplift the room in a boutique fashion.

The single bedroom is equally as stylish, however this time views reach out towards the mountains, so you can wake up to the serene backdrop every day that goes by.

Blaenau Ffestiniog 1.1 miles; Porthmadog 8 miles; Betws-y-Coed 15 miles; Beddgelert 16 miles.

Tanygrisiau, meaning "below the steps", refers to the stepped cliffs above this traditional Welsh village. The Moelwyn mountains protect the village from much of the northerly gales in the winter, and give it a pleasant southerly aspect with relatively mild weather considering its location high in Snowdon. The village stands amongst dramatic scenery, and Tanygrisiau is a good starting point for many walks, especially if your intention is to climb Moelwyn itself. Tanygrisiau was famous for its slate mining, producing a high quality black slate that was used across the world. Tanygrisiau railway station is on the famous Ffestiniog Railway, a narrow gauge railway built to carry slate from the mines down to the sea at Porthmadog; today it is a renowned tourist attraction providing stunning views on its trip to the coast. Only 1.1 miles away is Blaenau Ffestiniog, once the capital of slate quarrying and in the 18th century known as the "City of Slate". The town stands in an elevated, natural bowl amidst this mountainous region and has a good variety of shops and pubs, but is best known for its tourist attractions. One of the old quarries is now the renowned Llechwedd Slate Cavern. The famous narrow gauge Ffestiniog Railway provides wonderful trips through spectacular countryside. Enjoy superb walks and bike trails at Coed-y-Brenin, one of the best mountain bike centres in Britain, as well as good climbing at the Plas y Brenin National Mountain Centre, wonderful sandy beaches, or great fishing or golf. Visit delightful Betws-y-Coed, the Italianate Village at Portmeirion, or Bala, with its renowned white water rafting opportunities.
