  • "What a beautiful cottage."

It was so lovely to walk into, the heating was on so it was really cosy, the welcome pack was absolutely wonderful and it was spotlessly clean (including all the furniture). It wasn’t at all damp and it really did look exactly like the photographs. The beds and bed linens where really comfortable and of a high standard as were all of the items in the cottage. We really appreciated the Christmas decorations too! I would not hesitate in coming back to Swallows Nest, the house is so lovely and has the wow factor! Parking only issue but you can get a weekly pass for £8 a day from the Co op (only over the Bridge) which is a bit cheaper and you wouldn’t have the faff of renewing the meter.

Great location, completely suitable for our family of 5 plenty of space and walkable to everything. Could be boosted with a 4 slice toaster as the 2 slice toaster meant getting breakfast for 5 took a long while! Also lights in the entry way weren’t working. Those were tiny issues though, a really lovely stay in a great residence, would definitely come again!

The best cottage we have stayed in, in Whitby by a country mile !!. I left a couple of comments in the book that would improve the cottage even further and although we had a plumbing issue in the ground floor bathroom it was rectified during our stay. We will certainly be staying again in the future. Thank you

Kitchen is cramped and the table and chairs need sorting as the layout just doesn’t fit! The lounge is lovely but the suite is uncomfortable and low. Cobwebs in all bedrooms and stains on the bath were off putting. This was a girlie short break so it sufficed, it wasn’t that bad that I wouldn’t stay there again but it wouldn’t be at top of my list

  • "We absolutely loved the place!"

The standard and attention to detail was beyond exceptional. Good quality cutlery, crockery and in particular glassware. Would not hesitate to recommend or return. My background is hotel kitchen management, so if I could offer a few pointers, (from a Chef's point of view) which I hope you find useful. The kitchen tools would be great if they were near the cooker, say on a rack above the cooker, rather than in the dining room sideboard and some hooks at the sides of the cooker for oven gloves and drying cloths. Being on the oven door handles they tended to get in the way when opening and closing the oven / grill doors. The quality of the pans is great but they're a tad on the small side when cooking for six people. Finally, some wall hooks in the en-suite would be useful to hang towels once used. Thank you so much for a great week.

  • "Lovely cottage, tricky parking, noisy street."

We had a great 4 days in early July The cottage was as described and clean, although a little more attention to the cobwebs and the smell from the kitchen sink drain would be good. The central location is great, walking distance to all that Whitby has to offer (including the best fresh fish shop - Sandwell fisheries) but the downsides of the central location are: Parking/ unloading was a problem as the cottage is on the zigzags of a zebra crossing surrounded by double yellow lines. Thankfully the traffic warden who spoke to us was about education rather than penalties! It was then nigh on impossible to find parking for one, never mind 2 cars in the free area and the car park opposite was also full all the time. (And £9 per 24 hours - 2 cars = £££) A parking permit for the reserved area would be a great addition to this cottage! And it’s a noisy street with traffic flowing all night and happy holiday makers strolling home at all hours. The two back bedrooms are lovely and quiet, but the top floor room at the front was really noisy. If you’re used to night noise this won’t be a problem, we struggled. The cottage is well equipped and a great base, (no hairdryer, which is unusual these days

Thanks for the feedback Jenny & we're pleased you enjoyed your stay, but sorry to hear it was a bit noisy as it's normally quieter on our side of the harbour. Unfortunately parking in Whitby in the summer can be tricky & unfortunately its not currently possible to get a space in the reserved area, but there are loading bays opposite the Endeavour pub & parking advice in the information folder. We take your comments on board & we bought a hairdryer which we'll drop off next week. Tess & Russell. Property Owner

The living room on the first floor has a lovely view over the harbour and was a cosy place, with the logburner blazing, to spend a winters evening. The kitchen is well equipped with comfortable seating, a large dining table (brilliant for boardgames) and tv and the entrance porch was a useful place to remove sandy shoes and coats. 24hr parking is available in the adjacent carpark at a reasonable fee and the ticket was transferable to other council carparks which was useful. I would definitely recommend this cottage and am looking forward to a return visit.

Lovely friendly run pub just a few steps away called The Endeavour and a very tasty eatery across the road called Humble Pie definitely worth a try. Would have preferred some outdoor space due to taking a dog. Shame there wasn’t a parking permit included and a little surprised there wasn’t any hand soap in either of the bathrooms. All 6 of us are induction hob users but found this particular hob difficult to operate but we managed between us. Apart from those small issues we would definitely go back. • "We really enjoyed our stay in Swallows Nest a few weeks ago which was to celebrate my elderly fathers birthday who is not too steady on his feet these days."

One of the reasons we picked this cottage was the ground floor bedroom and shower room which turned out to be a great shout. The main lounge is on the 1st floor and while dad did go up there a few times, he felt it a little awkward coming back down and would have preferred it if there was a hand rail fitted to the wall. The location of the cottage was nothing short of fantastic - a very short level walk and you are in the thick of all the action in town. Again one of the reasons we picked this cottage and we couldn't have been more delighted with dad being able to walk to restaurants/pubs in the evening. There is also great views of the harbour out of the front facing windows which is another fantastic feature in a holiday cottage. The cottage itself was starting to look a little tired in parts with a few niggly snags here and there like the en-suite shower room door not shutting properly and the hair-dye splashes in the bath of the main bathroom which have been mentioned in previous reviews and I note that the owners are looking to do a bit of a refurb this winter so I'm sure what I've mentioned will no longer be an issue in the new year. The kitchen floor could probably also do with a good wash and scrub and not just a vacuum but overall, for what we paid for a weeks holiday in this location, we feel it was extremely good value for money and more than made up for the small issues we may have experienced here and there. The beds were all extremely comfortable in all of the rooms and we all slept really well. The linen was also of good quality and spotlessly clean. We had two dogs stay with us and were grateful for the inner porch and second door into the main living area. What a great idea for the security of dogs and a great place to store boots and hang coats. The car park straight across the road we felt was really good value especially as a 24 hour parking ticket covered you in various other car parks in the region. It was touch and go trying to get a space in the day time but nearly always a space available in the evening (early October). We thoroughly enjoyed our weeks stay and on reflection don't think we could have asked for a better cottage in a better location. Thank you :)

Beautiful cottage although is in need of some attention. Bath was stained, didn't look good, toilet seat not properly fixed. Couple of door latches missing. Flaking paint in the dining area, kept getting it on our clothes. Found peanuts under the bedside cupboard and a sticky vape box under the bed. Downstairs bed room was musty, not pleasant. Dog hairs under the sofa and in the corners of kitchen and living room. We did hoover during our stay and before leaving, other people's pet hair is not nice.

  • "Swallow’s Nest is in a fantastic location, right in the centre of Whitby."

Luckily I didn’t have to pay for parking the whole time I was there, as I found spaces on The Ropery. Swallow’s Nest itself looks like it could do with a bit of an overhaul. There is a downstairs bedroom which is extremely cramped and smelled musty and mouldy. The whole place could do with a deep clean, dust and hairs all over the wooden staircase. The bath looks awful and is covered in brown splatters.. I thought it was poo at first. Goodness knows what it is, but the bath needs replacing asap. Also, mould in bathroom grouting and on the wooden over bath tray, which needs chucking. This property is not luxury, it is average.

Thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback Yasmin. We have had a few comments about the cleanliness and as we are keen to ensure our guests have the best possible experience, we have now decided to change to a new cleaner and we are looking forward to improvements. Unfortunately, someone has stained the bath with hair dye, nothing more sinister than that! It is our plan to replace the bath in due course, but we are re-doing the kitchen first. We also have booked in to have the en-suite doors re-fitted to reduce steam from the shower getting in the downstairs bedroom but have put in a dehumidifier in the meantime. Tess & Russell. Thanks for the feedback Douglas. The benefit of Swallows Nest's central location does mean parking is a little more limited. • "Although the property is situated in a ,prime location the cottage itself leaves a lot to be desired."

For instance the stairs are very steep and could do with a handrail on both flights especially the top one. You need to stipulate it is not suitable for the older generation. In fact it is dangerous! The sitting room is on the first floor and because of the stairs we found ourselves sitting on the hard dining chairs so we didn’t have to go upstairs. The tv down there doesn’t work either. We found a dog toy under the sofa and a ball under the bed. We had to get one of our dogs balls out from under the drawers and pulled a pile of dog hair out with it. There was a big thick black cobweb on the brickwork at the side of the sofa. I think they need some responsible cleaners who actually do the job. The one plus it had was the single beds on the top floor were very comfortable. We didn’t use any of the cooking or washing facilities so I can’t say anything about them. We all used the shower on the ground floor so we didn’t have to climb into the bath as there are no grab rails to help. All in all we were very disappointed with the accommodation but loved Whitby itself. We also could not get into the “ yard” with the recycling bin because none of us are strongman!

Thanks for your review Carol and we're sorry to hear that you did not love our cottage. Whitby cottages are often characterful and in comparison to others, many guests have appreciated our ease of access with no cobbles or steps to negotiate, a ground floor bedroom and sofa in the ground floor kitchen diner. Netflix, Amazon Prime and TV players are all set up on the downstairs TV; due to damage to a local transmitter terrestrial TV is currently only available upstairs through the FreeSat that we installed. We will pass on your feedback to our cleaners to address going forward. Tess & Russell. Property Owner

The decor is lovely and gives the property a homely feel. The kitchen is well equipped but some of the cupboards could do with fixing as it ruins the look. The beds are very comfortable and the bedrooms are lovely, however the ground floor bedroom could benefit from a small bedside cabinet/table. The shower head in the main bathroom needs replacing as water spray's everywhere when showering. There is currently no terrestrial TV channels available at the property, but you can access Netflix and prime if you have your own account. There is a small car park opposite the property which allows you to park for 24 hour periods which can be extended using the app and there is free on street parking up on the hill behind the property if your lucky enough to get a space. All in all this property is a lovely cosy cottage and is value for money. It has great views of the harbour and has all the amenities on your doorstep. We where made to feel very welcome on arrival. The building is full of charm and is finished to a very high standard of both traditional and modern in design, which helps you to relax and unwind. Being December when we visited it was a nice touch to have been seasonally decorated, even with a couple of Christmas trees made it feel even more special. The fab view from the lounge and top bedroom of Whitbys harbour is right outside. Location is fantastic and feels very central and a very short walk from the Abbey. Car parking is £9 a day across road (free in December) but we managed to park on road behind. Truly enjoyed our stay and Wished we had booked longer. We all definitely said we would consider a return visit. Note: Take care on lower staircase when wearing socks as can be quiet slippy (wife slipped on last step).
