  • "Lovely well appointed cottage."

Ideal for 2. Clean comfortable and well equipped. Private parking was a bonus too.

  • "This cottage has all the facilities you could possibly ask for."

The owners really care about the comfort of their guests and go the extra mile to make sure you have an enjoyable stay. We would really recommend Applewood Cottage for the peace and quiet of the place and so handy and central for getting out and about around the North Yorkshire Moors.

  • "A very nice cottage with everything you need for a comfortable stay."

The garden, having a rather end of season look at the moment, has some very interesting planting and must look really nice in spring and summer. The cottage is situated on the very edge of the village and outside overlooks farmland. You can walk around the perimeter of the village on metalled roads passing the old mill and duckpond (complete with ducks!), church, and the two village pubs as well as many thatched cottages. A glance at the map will show the castles, abbeys and gardens etc. close by. And of course the superb North York Moors. On a clear night the dark skies are amazing. A great place for a really relaxing holiday!

We have stayed here before and it is always beautifully presented. The village is a lovely retreat with good walks from cottage and beautiful drives into heather moors and Howardian Hills. Good food in local pubs and restaurants. A great holiday thank you .

The cottage is situated on edge of a lovely village - quiet and very peaceful. The inside was immaculate and is equipped with all that one needs. The fixtures and fittings are top class with excellent decorations. Good location for exploring The Moors, local attractions etc. Many thanks for Welcome Gift of eggs, milk etc. Will look forward to a future return visit.

Welcome pack containing milk, butter, bread and biscuits. Very informative welcome book, and all information for appliances . Off road parking on drive with gates for secure parking, nice outdoor space. Very peaceful location yet, 2miles from amenities of Helmsley. We would return tomorrow.

  • "We found the property up to expectations with good quality equipment and furniture, and in a quiet location with a lovely garden."

Minor issues were the small bedroom with a lack of much shelving for storage of clothes, one dining chair was rickety, and neighbours dogs persistently barking at times, usually in the early morning. These issues did not detract from us thoroughly enjoying our stay. A generous welcome pack was gratefully received

We had a lovely holiday and visited many beautiful and interesting places. North Yorkshire beautiful. We went on lots of beautiful walks in the lovely countryside.

  • "The cottage is very comfortable and the interior and fittings are of a high standard but the garden and garden furniture are in dire need of attention as they have been badly neglected and were unusable."

Also, While the cottage interior is well lit from roof windows, it is disappointing not to be able to see outside when seated in the lounge area. One assumes this is a security decision but it makes the interior somewhat claustraphobic.

  • "This is our second visit to Applewood Cottage, we stayed 18 months ago and booked with another company, just as lovely as the first time, everything immaculate, cosy and comfortable."

We noticed there was no welcome pack as before but that wasn’t an issue, understandable in these uncertain times. Had a lovely weekend, Harome and Helmsley are charming places, had a lovely meal at The Pheasant on the Saturday evening . All in all a perfect weekend.

  • "Lovely cottage with comfy bed and seating."

Plenty of room. We were short of nothing. There was even washing up liquid and dishwasher tablets, tea, coffee, salt. Wifi and smart telly were an added bonus. Lovely and clean and very quiet location. Would definitely recommend this cottage. There was a lovely garden which would be perfect in summer. The only drawback (nothing to do with the cottage) was the fire which has sadly burned down the Star Inn. We were so sorry about it and feel for the owner. However, we will definitely rebook the cottage when the Star has reopened. If you plan to eat at the Star then book in plenty of time as demand is high.

  • "Really lovely cottage, everything thought of, impeccably clean, thank you."

I agree with a previous review though, very pungent air freshener/cleaning products used. We had to air the cottage for quite a while when we arrived. Otherwise, faultless.

  • "There are a few improvements that could be made to make life easier for guests."

The oven needs some simple instructions to turn the oven on to set a temperature, which is what most people will want. The shower cubicle has nowhere to put the shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and sponge other than the floor. Not all your guest are young and able reach so far down. We had trouble getting the bathroom heater to come on until we discovered that turning the sitting room thermostat up to 23* worked immediately. The tv only had very limited programs when we arrived until we retuned it, which then gave us the full range of freeview channels. I know there had been problems with the Bilsdale transmitter but the owners should have retuned it. John Cawthra.

  • "The cottage was lovely and cute for one person."

Very convenient for visiting friends and family and All Saints church in Helmsley However, the whole place was filled with toxic chemicals in various sprays, scented sticks and the bed linen. I had 3 asthmas attacks and had pains in my chest and headaches all week and came home early. Has to sleep with out bedding. Unless you suffer with breathing issues people are not aware that the chemicals in these things are actually toxic. My son is a Doctor of Chemistry from Oxford and has explained what they are how damaging they are

  • "May seem minor but would have thought a Cottage of this standard would have a better T."

    V. with at least Free View Channels not just basic BBC/ITV channels. I would think that most people in this type of Cottage would spend most evenings in so a better choice of viewing would help especially at the moment with no DVDS etc.

About the location

HELMSLEY

Kirkbymoorside 6 miles; Thirsk 14 miles; Pickering 13 miles; York 26 miles.

Lying in a sheltered corner of Upper Ryedale, on the southern edge of the North York Moors National Park, Helmsley is a prestigious market town with a spacious market square surrounded by houses, hotels and shops. The area is important historically - Helmsley has its own 12th century castle and English Heritage’s Rievaulx Abbey and Castle Howard are close by. Helmsley also boasts an arts centre showing films and plays, and an outdoor swimming pool, which is open during the summer. There is excellent walking on the doorstep - indeed the Cleveland Way starts in Helmsley - and the surrounding North York Moors with their hidden dales and villages are pretty in all seasons.
