  • "A brilliant place to stay, lots of space inside the cottage itself and beautiful scenery all around outside."

Upon arrival we were greeted to a set of Easter eggs and buns, which was a really nice extra treat. We went for some walks around the property which were very picturesque too

  • "I never write reviews but felt this place really deserved one."

This was our first trip away since the start of the pandemic and with being poorly and working from home all that time, it felt very strange to be staying over somewhere else. Would it be clean? Would it be busy? Would we be safe? We need not have worried Avril was on hand to provide a friendly but socially distanced welcome in the cleanest holiday home we have ever stayed in. The cottage is gorgeous with everything you could ever need. Nice welcome cakes and balloons for my partner celebrating his birthday plus some essentials including a bottle of fizz. Location was quiet and calming and we made use of the hot tub every day. The ultimate calming / recharging getaway we had hoped for and the first place I have ever stayed where I didn’t really want to come home. We are now just working out when this year we can come back. Thanks for a perfect pre-pandemic getaway.

  • "We had a lovely relaxing week at the Fishermen's Cottage."

Avril made us feel very welcome and the cakes and Prosecco on arrival were a lovely touch, we enjoyed them thoroughly. Having the hot tub to relax in was wonderful to either start the day with or come back to. The hosts could not have done more for us, there was a bit of an issue with wifi (not their fault, a local mast had been damaged), they immediately sorted by bringing us a new modem, which definitely helped. Our stay was much needed for a variety of reasons and was just what we needed to recharge the batteries. We would chose Fisherman's Cottage again should we decide to return to this part of the country on a self catering basis, it was wonderful!.

We met the owners when they came to check the hot tub on the Sunday, they were so friendly & available via mobile if we needed anything. The cottage is in a beautiful location & we enjoyed every minute we stayed there, in fact we didn’t want to leave! I can’t recommend fisherman’s cottage enough, we will definitely be returning. • "Wow, perfection."

After not being able to spend time together for over a year, to spend a week here with my sister and brother in law was perfect. Beautiful, well equipped cottage, amazing views, huge hot tub, peace and quiet, except the bird chorus that woke us up every morning, but can think of worse alarm calls x. Home baked scones, cupcakes and jams on arrival set up just how fabulous the hosts were. Not normally one for going to the same place twice, but may make an exception for this one.

The location is ideal, tranquil and peaceful. The only noise we heard all week was birdsong. Having said that you are only a short drive away from places like Yarm, Durham and Richmond. During our stay we saw Pheasants, Hares, Herons, Deer and a Woodpecker. The cottage is immaculate inside and out. The photos and description on Syke's website don't do it justice. Just go and find out for yourselves, you won't be disappointed.

  • "Fisherman's cottage is absolutely outstanding."

It is by far the best cottage that we have stayed in. The facilities are second to none, and the host was brilliant. Avril has thought about everything, and we enjoyed every minute of our stay. From the welcome cake, chocolates and prosecco on arrival, to the robes and slippers for the hot tub; everything was just lovely. The cottage was very clean, and is decorated beautifully. The area is great for country walks, and is close to the nearby town of Darlington. Fisherman's cottage is a real hidden gem. We will definitely be back, thank you Avril and Andrew :) As far as my experience with Skye's I am not likely to book with them again. Before finding Fisherman's cottage, I booked another property for the same dates. When I contacted the host I was informed that the property was already booked for those dates, despite it being available to book online. I cancelled the booking with Sykes, however the money was not released straight back into my account. I found another property in the mean time, and contacted Sykes to request that they transfer the funds to the new booking, however they said that they couldn't. I then asked that they reserve the property for me until the funds were released back to me, but again they couldn't do that. By this time it was days before we were due to go away. I found them overall very unhelpful considering the mistake that they had made in the first place. Luckily I had rang the host straight away, otherwise we may have only found out that the property was not available, on the day we were due to go.

  • "We have stayed at a number of cottages in the UK and Fisherman's Cottage is easily the best."

It is remote enough so that you can only hear the wildlife, but still close enough to the amenities so that you are not totally isolated. The instructions to find the cottage are detailed and easy to understand so there is no chance of getting lost. Inside it is immaculately clean, warm and welcoming and the cake and Prosecco were a fantastic surprise. It's worth booking just for the cake. The cottage is equipped with everything you need for your stay and the decor follows a fish/countryside theme throughout. Avril has obviously spent a lot of time finding the various items that adorn the cottage.

  • "Avril & Andrew's cottage has 3 double bedrooms, 2 on the first floor and one on the ground."

All 3 bedrooms/bathrooms are beautifully presented with nice luxury touches such as twin bath robes and slippers in each. All 3 bathrooms have showers and one of the bathrooms on the 1st floor has a bath tub with shower over. The cottage has a 'Tardis like' quality as it appears bigger on the inside than would appear from the outer. Lounge, dining & kitchen are are open plan with bi-fold doors, french doors and windows on 3 sides of the living area make the most of the stunning rural and river views. Even in early December the light airy feel of this place was fantastic. The only other room to mention is a useful utility cupboard off the lounge which houses the boiler and perfect for drying clothes such as the bath robes after a dip in the hot tub. Under floor heating throughout the ground floor kept us toasty with log burner used mainly for astetic reasons rather than a need for more warmth. The kitchen is equipped with everything you need and again finished to high standard with granite worktops, built in washer and dish washer and solid wooden units. Outside you will find the 6 person hot tub, outdoor seating and ample parking for 3/4 cars. As it was December the table tennis table in the adjacent outbuilding went unused but a nice addition for warmer times of the year. The location is quite remote, about 2.5 miles from Neasham on a working farm with sheep and pheasants to keep you company. Make sure you don't forget anything you will need as it's a good 20+ minutes to the nearest shop. We absolutely loved this place. As it is so new everything was spotless, clean and in pristine condition. I can't recommend this place highly enough. The perfect cottage in the perfect setting. I don't think I've ever felt more relaxed and comfortable on a week's holiday and hope to return next year.

It was even better than the photos on the website, tastefully furnished and decorated to a high standard throughout. We arrived to find a homemade cake waiting for us which was a lovely touch. We always stay in high end places and this was the best kitchen we've ever had with quality appliances and kitchenware. The hot tub is a really generous size so you'd easily fit 6 adults in. The perfect place to unwind and enjoy a bit of luxury, would totally recommend it to anyone.

When we arrived the cottage was all warm and toasty and Avril had left us some scones which we really appreciated. We loved the hot tub and used this loads. It is so cosy shielded from the weather by the fences which have lovely led lighting attached. There was also a barn with ball games and a table tennis table which was a surprise that kept us busy all week. The cottage is totally isolated, and it was so chilling just watching and listening to the wildlife, and watching the farmers at work in the fields. Avril must have spent so much time choosing the very tasteful decor - the theme all through is fishing and wildlife. A gem not to be missed. We will definitely be back.
