"We were made to feel very welcome at Claire House with a fridge full of goodies!"
Really lovely place to stay, clean, comfortable and very well-appointed. Easy, private parking which was a bonus. We only had a slight problem which was promptly sorted. We walked everywhere as it's so close to shops and restaurants. Wonderful area with so much to see and do. We would certainly return and recommend as a great place to stay. Thank you.

"This properties in a fantastic location and is very high spec."
6/7 minutes walk into Barnard Castle, where there are 4 or 5 old-fashioned pubs a couple of which serve food and a lot of bakers and coffee shops. Unbelievable, the property itself has parking for two cars and a lovely outside seating area. Unfortunately, the outside furniture was not fit for purpose and has a lot of wear and tear so we have to use our own chairs. This didn’t take away from a lovely week up there and we would definitely use the property again

"Overall a very nice stay in a very nice house."
....however I am not sure it deserves the 5 sykes stars based on our visit. The location is superb and the appearance of the house is excellent. The car parking is also superb. On initial viewing the house is very clean and tidy with everything you will want in a cottage/holiday home, however on closer inspection I would say the cleaning could be better....the sink holes are all dirty, and we had a used soap bar in a plastic cup left by the sink in the bathroom. The drainage pipes in the bathroom (both wash basin and shower) need to be cleared as water took ages to drain away....I put boiling water down both which helped but someone needs to put some proper drain cleaner down the plug holes of both. The toilet brush in the bathroom was just disgusting and needs to be changed. On our visit we were missing a hair dryer and had to go out and buy one...the owner was really good and apologetic and offered to refund the amount but we decided to take it home with us...however the cleaner should check that surely ?? As has been mentioned the coffee table in the lounge is a crazy thing...very large indeed (not shown in photos on this listing btw) and very low...we kept banging our legs into it so moved it like other visitors did. and lastly I have to mention the beds...far too soft...I appreciate everyone has different tastes but most people would prefer a medium and not a soft bed and we would not stay here again based on the beds. So overall its a nice holiday home and could easily be 5 stars but not sure it is right now

Very good accomodation only problem was with the washing line which is rusted up and not really useable, everything else in good working order

"Really lovely spotless house with a great location and amenities."
We would not hesitate to come back. We enjoyed walking our dog into the town and getting the best fish and chips.
-
"Absolutely perfect house for our weekend away."
Perfect walking distance from the town and nearby wedding venue. House was clean throughout with lovely decor and furniture. Lovely welcoming food hamper too! Thank you for such a wonderful stay!
-
"This is our 2nd time in this gorgeous cottage, the cleaning and maintenance does let it down a bit though, the shower heads both had black mould on them, the cooker extractor was really greasy, there were dirty glasses in the dishwasher and the garden needed some care, the lawn needed cutting and it needed a good tidy round."
The double bed for us is far too soft and the king-size was really creaky. It's a shame as the building is gorgeous and the location is perfect. We would stay there again as these are all issues which can be addressed.

"A beautiful looking property, warm and with great parking."
However, the WiFi is VERY POOR, YouTube or BBC sounds won’t load, and as for trying to work!!! Quite a shoddy finish. Beds are too soft for my liking though would suit some. But headboards rattle and one fell off. Had issues with some kitchen utensils, and cleanliness needs attention. Plug holes dirty and tobacco/cannabis flakes found in bedroom drawer. Plus a lot of cigarette ends by the front door. Also some washing up liquid and a few more toilet rolls would have been a nice touch.

"We had an incredible week in Barnard Castle!"
The house is beautiful - clean, really high spec snd the kitchen is amazing. Short walk into town for shopping/restaurants (we highly recommend Babuls) and relatively easy to find. The place was spotless and we appreciated the little welcome pack of bread/eggs etc as this sorted us out for the first morning. We are already planning our next visit!
-
"The welcome pack of bread, eggs, cookies, butter, cheese and milk was much appreciated."
A beautiful house with lovely decor. Everywhere was clean and tidy. Personally I found the sofa uncomfortable. I am 5'3" and couldn't lean back without a couple of cushions. I prefer a more upright sofa. I also didn't think the sofa was in keeping with the house, just like the very low coffee table which was an eyesore and an accident waiting to happen. We moved it over to the tv cabinet so that we didn't fall over it. The beds were comfortable, but the one in the blue room is creaky on one side. Lucky I was on my own so I moved sides. A couple of negatives, but overall we had a lovely stay and were generally happy with the accommodation.

"Lovely return visit Once stayed never forgotten, I was lovely to return to ..."
Lovely return visit Once stayed never forgotten, I was lovely to return to Clare House having stayed earlier in the year , Standards still high despite some oversights compared to previous stay (no bath mat,Clothing left in drawers from previous occupants, small white dog hairs all over the sofa ) Clare house is the perfect property for exploring the area with fully equipped kitchen area , secure garden area , Would definitely return in 2026

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at 1 Claire House Way."
Great location for exploring Barnard Castle. Loved the super-high ceilings in the property giving a light & airy feel, and it was very well equipped throughout. Recently renovated, we appreciated the modern fixtures and fittings e.g. fantastic walk-in shower, attractive decor throughout. Parking was super-easy compared to other quirky properties we've stayed at in Barney. One king, one double and one twin bedded room. Would recommend and would stay again. For the record, we liked the sofa!
-
"The location is ideal and the property having a huge parking space is a bonus and in a very nice, quiet area."
Access was very easy and nice little touch of bread, eggs etc left for the guests. However, we felt the cleanliness and comfort really let the property down especially for the price paid. On arrival, the toilet hadn't been flushed, the bin hadn't been emptied and there were crumbs and hairs all over the sofa, the kitchen sink was dirty and the bathroom sink could really do with a deep clean so we lost confidence in the cleanliness of the property. Personally we found the beds really uncomfortable and noisy, everytime you rolled over it creaked to the point it felt the bed was about to break so we didnt sleep well. Also having a dog that’s part of the family for owners, it was a shame they were limited to a certain part of the property. I understand it has to cater to both but feel it would be best to be completely dog friendly or not at all.

Wow, From opening the door this property exudes luxury , from the flooring up to the high ceilings, high end appliances , storage nooks , everything one could possibly need and more etc ( there is a reason this property has a housekeeping bond which is demonstrated in its well kept status) Lovely to see how this 1812 building has been converted , Lovely quiet location with secure garden The location is perfect for a walk into Barny and exploring further afield Wifi can be slow but just open the door to where the router is kept and this improves the situation Access is as previously stated through the Richardson community hospital driveway
-
"Lovely modern and well equipped accomodation."
Perfect location for exploring Barnard Castle without having to move the car from the convenient parking space right outside the front door. Lots of local attractions and beauty spots within short driving distance. Would certainly book again.
-
"1 Claire House has everything you need."
The kitchen has every piece of cutlery and cooking utensils imaginable. There is even a spice rack. We only used the oven twice to heat up a quiche and sausage rolls, but everything is there. It is a short 10minute walk into town with a good choice of eateries. Being in our 70s we weren't keen on the sofa but that is just a personal thing. The bed we used was really comfortable ensuring a good night's sleep. Overall , 5 STAR accommodation.

"A beautifully clean, spacious and comfortable house."
Great facilities and location. Lovely private garden and plenty of parking. Bike storage was not as expected and bikes had to be left outside, unsecured but apart from that, a great stay, thank you!
-
"Great accommodation and location."
No issues at all. Many thanks
-
"Beautiful property."
Well maintained and furnished to a high standard. Great location for the town and local attractions. Kitchen very well equipped to cook any meal. Living room is spacious with a lovely dining area and living room area. Small things need looking at. One of the dining room chairs had a collapsed seat cushion and wasn’t really safe to sit on in case it fell through. The grouting in the shower area could do with a good clean. Slightly unsightly. When we stayed it was extremely windy and the bedroom windows albeit double glazed were very noisy, rattled and let a lot of breeze in. Beds are super comfy and more wardrobe and storage space than you can think of which is fabulous. I would recommend to stay here but would hope the small things that need addressing don't become bigger issues that would spoil this lovely property.
-
"A beautiful spacious home within walking distance of the town centre and close to Barnard Castle as well as the Bowes Museum."
Rooms are spacious and well lit. Kitchen modern and well stocked. Would definitely come back.
-
"The house was amazing!"
Extremely well finished and a very homely feel - not that you were just staying in a soul-less holiday house. I would say it allows dogs rather than being dog friendly. There is a huge emphasis on not allowing dogs on the sofa or upstairs, which is detailed before booking so you know what you’re getting, but as a family dog who has the run of the house at home it made things a little stressful when sat at night. That said, it wouldn’t stop us booking again - we are already planning to do so!
-
"Really lovely house, easy walking distance to the centre of town and the castle."
We loved the high ceilings and well-equipped kitchen. We did have an issue with the kitchen taps but the owner was very responsive and sorted it out quickly.
-
"Lovely property in great location for shops and restaurants only 10mins walk."
10mins to Bowes museum which is fab. Inside property quality fittings and decoration. Nice to have a garden busy road nearby so there is traffic noise outside. I would highly recommend this property.
-
"Beautiful house."
Lovely decor & finish, clean with everything we needed. Enclosed garden with furniture- perfect for the dog. Welcome groceries very well received- thank you. We’ll definitely be back.
-
"Very nice property Excellent location and would definitely book again."
-
"Lovely cottage great location only thing we don’t like was the comfort of the beds ."
. really poor mattress on all the beds.. and the sofa wasn’t very comfortable and really low down.. sounds minor but when you have been out all day you want to relax and get a good nights sleep ..
-
"We loved the place, great value for money and we'll be back!"
Only minor feedback is that the instructions for directions could be clearer. Took us a while to find it. Maybe mention in the pre-check in email that access is via the hospital?
-
"The house is spotlessly clean and well kitted out with kitchen items and towels."
The beds were comfortable. The welcome pack was indeed welcome. The only criticism is because we are an older couple with dodgy knees and hips: the sofa is very low which can, in our situation, be quite an issue. Younger or more flexible people would have no complaints staying at the property. Directions to the property could be better. To access the parking in front of the house you have to locate the entrance to the Richardson Community Hospital on Victoria Rd, drive through the car park onto Claire House Way.
-
"Quiet though convenient location for the town centre."
Property in very good condition and the garden caught the afternoon sun, however the coffee table was way too large for the living area and there were no spirit tumblers or pint glasses. I personally found the pillows and duvet quite poor, otherwise it was well equipped.
-
"The accommodation was absolutely lovely."
We had a great break and would return again. Can recommend to anyone.
-
"Fabulous home in Barnard Castle, furnished and decorated to a high standard with everything that you need including dishwasher and washing machine and tumble drier."
Clean and very close to the center of town for the many bars, restaurants and cafes. Parking for 2 cars in the drive. Enclosed garden was perfect for our dog. Note that dogs are not allowed upstairs but this wasn't an issue for us at all. We are a family of 4, 2 kids and a dog. Property is quiet and comfortable and would highly recommend.
-
"Thankyou very much for cosy and comfortable stay in a lovely property"
-
"Very tidy and well appointed property, in a good location."
Beds comfortable. Only negatives : sofa was too low for us (middle aged couple with stiff knee s!) ; boiler label indicates it hasn't been serviced for several years.
-
"We loved our stay at Claire House in November."
It was cosy, well equipped, had everything we needed. The garden was perfect and safe for our little dog. Property was comfortable, quiet spot but 5 mins from the main high street. Will definitely stay again and recommend. Thank you.

"Even the Premier Inn provide hand soap!"
Difficulty of stairs should have been mentioned in description. We had a real performance to guarantee that the toilet seat had been fixed before arrival. Furniture needs updating or replacing, springs coming through king sized mattress and dining chairs. Bedside tables only low boxes. Sofa too wide and low, cushions too soft. Nowhere comfortable to sit. Equipment not working e.g. radio and hoover. Claims to be dog friendly, many notices up prove not so. Items provided such as washing up liquid, loo roll, washing liquid etc.very cheap. No extras such as cling film or foil. Food from previous guests left in cupboard. Only one hand towel per floor and only one tea towel. Overall felt very cheap, which is a shame because it is a beautiful property in a fantastic location. The finishing touches let it down. It felt like the owners were just trying to make as much money as they could out of you. We do appreciate that it is a business, but there was a distinct lack of customer service.
Thank you for your feedback. We are disappointed to hear that you weren't fully satisfied. This is very surprising, as 1 Claire House Way is one of our most popular properties in the Barnard Castle area; and we receive fantastic reviews overall. Regarding items not available in the property, it is a self-catering cottage, therefore the owners are not at liberty to provide such things as cling film, etc. Guests are expected to bring their owner provisions for their stay. furnishings and soft furnishings are all subjective, we are sorry these weren't to your taste. There are a couple of signs politely asking guests not to allow pets upstairs or on furniture. We advised the owners to provide these as not all their guests will be pet owners and they have to be more mindful of them. In terms of the hand towels, the cleaning company should have left more however if you had contacted us or the owner they could have supplied more. We are sorry that this property proved not to be the correct one for you. Property Owner

Beautiful house tastefully decorated nice garden to sit and relax well located for walking in to town and visiting local attractions we had such a lovely holiday and would definitely recommend and we will be visiting again, and the welcome basket was a lovely touch
-
"Lovely stay, super clean and great location."
Would recommend.
-
"Beautiful property, which has everything needed, great location and close to the town, along with some lovely walks and places to visit."
Sadly, let down by the overall cleanliness (toilet dirty, floors still with dog hair, beds not made and more) and not being ready for our check in time. Owners very helpful when first notified and some things rectified. However, follow up text to owners not responded to, leaving us to contact Sykes, which was disappointing. There is a washing machine available which is missing from the listing.
-
"Lovely house, our second visit and I expect we’ll be back again."
-
"Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely use it again."
-
"The house was in a perfect location and close to town."
It was quite difficult to find though as it's not clear from the directions that you have to drive through the entrance to the hospital. It would help people find it if this could be included. We had a wonderful stay and would certainly stay again.
-
"This is a beautiful house in a great location."
We had everything we needed during our stay Everywhere was spotlessly clean and of a very high standard The enclosed garden is private and was ideal for our little dog to have a potter round The house is ideally located for walking to all the amenities in Barnard Castle The lovely hamper was an added bonus We look forward to visiting again and recommend it highly
-
"Very nice property, very clean and tidy, only things to note 1 no bin liners provided 2 could do with small tables in living room to place drinks on when watching TV."
3.TV,s in Bedroom would be nice Only little things but this property is so close to being perfect, really enjoyed our stay.
-
"Beautiful property, really well kept and clearly a lot of thought has been put into the detail of what is there for you to be able to use during your stay."
The welcome hamper really was welcome ! Great location and would definitely go back.
-
"We had a lovely stay in 1 Claire House."
It's in a great location, with a 5 minute walk to the town centre. The house was spotless and it was lovely to receive some welcome gifts on our arrival. The accommodation is very comfortable and the layout is great for a family. Barnard Castle area is great for a short visit with plenty to do in the town and the amazing Tees valley and Pennines close by.
-
"A stunning property."
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely return.
-
"We have had a lovely holiday, weather has been kind to us."
The property is one of best that we have stayed in, very well equipped, warm, quiet, with high quality fittings and finishings. Parking & location are very good. Leisure facilities close by. Lovely enclosed private garden. A few little touches would enhance the property further, a non slip shower mat along with a soap dish & a little more support in the lounge furniture. Would definitely recommend & return for another stay. Thanks for the lovely welcome pack, much appreciated.

The market town of Barnard Castle is situated in the unspoilt countryside of Teesdale in County Durham. It stands on the site of an ancient Roman fort which crosses the river. The medieval ruins of the castle still tower over the river and are well worth a visit. Known affectionately as 'Barney’ by residents and visitors alike, the town boasts cobble streets, yards and back lanes, which were first laid out in the 12th century. The nearby Bowes Museum is well worth a visit and a wonderful way to spend a day wandering around this beautiful building and experiencing the fascinating exhibitions. Beautiful walking country is right on the doorstep of this lovely market town, with woodland walks and cycle routes and the Lake District, the Pennine and Teesdale Ways, and the River Tees and magnificent waterfalls at High Force are all within easy reach.
