It’s great for a relaxing break and views are stunning. Able to do some walks from the cottage but mainly drove to places - Saltend and Whitby due to wet weather . Everything about the place was top notch x

It is in the middle of nowhere with gorgeous views, comfortable beds and plenty of space. Large open kitchen /living room made it ideal for our family get together. Drive for access is very steep, pleased I drive a 4x4 as would not feel confident in a small car

  • "Beautiful location, tranquil but a mud bath due to all the rain."

There is no secluded garden to let your dog out , need to have the dog on lead, no place to wash the dogs paws/legs except to lift her up and put her in the utility room sink! ; the property is very hard to find in the dark - no signs after main barn to turn off the road or sign post on the gate! However, property was warm and cosy when we got there , thank you for the goody basket. Well stocked kitchen, however needed more spoons and more drinking "mugs". Pots were scratched, baking tray was burnt and there were no spoons to stir the cooking. Lovely big fridge in the kitchen and freezer in the utility room. Bedrooms with warm bedding and so many pillows, towels for everyone but white so hard to tell who was using what and no place to dry them. Very small clothes rack as clothes got wet and dirty needed to be washed! Biggest problem was the bathroom and taps. We travelled with 3 vulnerable adults, chose the barn to allow them ground floor living. There was no shower tray , shower in the bath was very, very powerful and went way past the protecting bath/shower shield causing puddles in the bathroom after every shower. NONE of the adults could use the taps in the bathroom sink or the bathtub taps - these urgently needed to be upgraded. The sink either gave you freezing water or you burnt yourself as the water was so hot. Same result in the shower - taps need an urgent upgrade. The taps upstairs were easier to use but no mixer tap . On the Friday and Saturday the car park, roads and whole area was taken over by pheasant shooter, dogs, tractors, 4x4's blocking us in and so much noise. We escaped London to avoid the fireworks and get some peace but this was shattered for two days. This resulted in us leaving one day earlier on Saturday as our dog and the vulnerable adults were terrified with the gun shots. THIS SHOULD GO INTO THE LETTING AGREEMENT THAT THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN! Beautiful area, amazing surrounding beauty and when it was quite, it was Idyll. Would definately visit the area again.

Hi Sheela I am sorry to hear you had so many problems. We think we have solved the problems with the taps as they are always ok when guests leave and we check the property but this should hopefully be resolved soon. In regards to the shoots, it is difficult to know how much they will disturb the barns in advance but we will try our hardest to find out their schedule in the future. Again, I am very sorry for your experiences and we hope to improve for future holiday goers. Property Owner

Accommodation was comfortable - bed, mattress and linen were of high standard. Plug sockets and mirrors in the perfect position in bedrooms. Kitchen was well equipped. Property was clean and well maintained with exception of ground floor bathroom, but did not effect stay. Lovely welcome pack and snug area which was a big hit with the kids. Although TV had no signal we had brought our own chrome cast and kids enjoyed films streamed from their tablets. Great location for walking and scenary was beautiful. Perfect winter stay and we'll be booking again for sure.

  • "First the positives, if you don’t mind the steep access road to the property then the barn is in a good location close to Staithes."

It is spacious and the accommodation worked for a multigenerational family. We arrived in the dark and cold to find the property absolutely freezing and the heating not working. We could see from several previous customers that this had been an ongoing problem which had not been properly addressed. The caretaker came out promptly but we had problems throughout the stay until an engineer came on the last day and even then sleep was disturbed that night by a weird banging noise coming from the boiler. The accommodation itself is definitely not 4 star and is best described as tired and grubby. One of the chairs in the sitting room was filthy and some of the dining chairs were broken. The bathrooms need a complete refit, with the showers inadequate - there is mould and paint peeling off the walls. The cooker was dirty and old and the fridge went off every so often. It’s a shame as with some TLC the barn could be lovely. We wouldn’t stay again.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know these problems. We have been working on the heating issues and hope to be able address it properly during the beginning of this year. We are also reviewing many of the other things mentioned as we believe we can make the barns look back to their best with some tlc. We do hope you can come again and if you do will hopefully see a great improvement. Property Owner

unable to open any windows so couldn't get rid of flies . The toaster is only half working and panel under oven kept falling off. Taps in bathroom are very difficult to turn off, so stiff. hole in downstairs bathroom wall. There was no x box although one was advertised. But the most disappointing thing was I emailed to check if there would be a christmas tree and was told yes. there wasnt and my grandkids were upset santa wouldnt leave any presents.we found it 2 days later ontop of cupboard in a box in the utility room. such a shame .it wasnt already out

Thank you for taking the time to review the property. I am very sorry the house didn’t meet your expectations. We have reviewed the listing regarding what is available and will be do lots of maintenance work early this year to improve the overall experience. Regarding the tree I can only apologise and I will look into why this wasn’t up like promised. Property Owner

  • "Wonderful stay in a picturesque location and great venue for our annual Pre-Christmas family and friends get together, highly recommend!"

There is a negative but I'll suggest also very much a positive. An owner can't envisage a boiler failure and I trust it was maintained, so when it goes down there has to be understanding from us as a customer. So, not ideal BUT, Michelle who was on hand to support was fantastic in her communication and was able to have first a local maintenance support visit to check the thermostat (arriving with kindling for the woodburner!) and then the following day an engineer turned up to investigate further. Yes turned out to be a mechanical issue but heating was restored within 24hrs of our cry for help. All this when the roads were sheet ice, we were a bit stuck! Excellent WiFi kept us entertained with Xmas films and great area for dog walks! Thank you!

I am so glad your friends and family had a great time. Michelle is a star and I am so pleased she was able to sort it so quickly. Hopefully you can visit us again soon. Property Owner

  • "We loved staying at The Barn, the location was beautiful and the accommodation really comfortable."

We’d definitely recommend staying there and would book another stay here to explore the area more as it was such a nice place and so well located for visiting nearby towns or going out on walks. A few small issues in the barn which could easily be fixed to make future stays better - There wasn’t enough forks for all the guests who were staying to eat at the same time. The shower downstairs could do with a shower curtain rather than a screen, or a shower that can have the height adjusted as the water went everywhere and had to be mopped up between each guests shower. The welcome pack was a nice addition but we felt that basics such as salt, pepper, oil for cooking and a few more dishwasher tablets would have been more helpful rather than us having to go to stock up on this things during our stay.

Thank you for taking the time to write this. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay and that you wish to come back. We always hope to continue to improve the property so your feedback is greatly appreciated. Property Owner

Distant sea views, easy access to the coast, Whitby, Runswick Bay, Staithes etc. Quite isolated but in a nice area and lovely for star watching. Very clean, beds comfy and good linen, quality crockery and lovely log fire with one basket of logs provided. Kitchen facilities good, but as other guests have mentioned the dining chairs could do with replacing and other minor issues such as the taps were difficult to turn off, the gate very stiff and bathroom fittings need fixing. Had a problem with the heating but the manager and owner were very responsive and addressed the issue very promptly. Would definitely go back

We are so glad you enjoyed the views and neighbouring towns and villages. We hope to have sorted all the plumbing problems now and the taps and heating should be a lot easier to use when you hopefully return. Property Owner

  • "Nice barn, but a few things could be better."

The bathrooms were ok, but the taps were old fashioned and hard to turn off completely. Also, the towel rail was hanging off the wall. Small issues like some of the dining room seats were worn and not enough table mats etc let the barn down. It’s a beautiful building and we enjoyed the sense of space and the kids loved the upstairs area. It was a good size for 7 of us and didn’t feel cramped. The location is quite remote but beautiful settings and views. Also spectacular for star watching on a clear night. Overall, good with a few small issues.

We are glad you mostly enjoyed the property, it does have some amazing views. Thank you for the feedback. We can confirm a plumber has fixed the issue with the taps and I will investigate the other issues you reported are checked on and sorted. We hope you can visit us again soon. Property Owner

However the following points should be noted. The downstairs toilet seat wanted repairing and the basin taps were hard to turn on and off , needed new tap washers or new taps. Further the bath was very slippy for people over eighty, a bath rubber would have been helpful. The fridge light was off and the kitchen extractor was not working. Although the cottage was dog friendly it was not dog safe they could not be let out without a lead on.

Thank you for staying with us and taking the time to give us some feedback. We can confirm we have had a plumber to look into and repair the taps. We hope you can visit us again soon. Property Owner

  • "We really enjoyed our stay."

The barn was lovely and the beds really comfortable. Downsides for us were the roads to and from the property, we have a campervan and found it hard to drive to the property. It would have been helpful to know this beforehand. The missing xbox was a disappointment as we had a teenage son, one of the reasons we booked was that there was an xbox for him to play on. A large frying pan to cook a family meal would also be helpful, a DVD player in the lounge, tourist information leaflets, extra bin bags & tin foil and recycling bins we felt were needed. However the welcome pack was a nice touch and overall a lovely stay. Thank You!

Thank you for the feedback. We will look into updating the property information with more information on the road. Sorry for any disappointment caused with the entertainment available, this has now been updated too. Property Owner

  • "We really enjoyed our stay adore Yorkshire however with 3 teenage children the so called area for them with Xbox and television was very disappointing as there was no Xbox and no remote for the television which seemed not to work and when we enquired about this we’re told the television was in need of replacement and anyway the description provided by you was incorrect so the chill out area was not used at all."

My grandchildren have been brought up well and did not complain about the lack of Xbox but other families might not be so lucky As the cottage is for eight people the frying pan was more suitable for a family of three. It could have been a little cleaner (lots of dust and crumbs under the table) but although this sounds highly critical we all agreed overall is was a stunning place to stay and would definitely not stop us from rebooking next year

Thank you for the feedback. We will look into the description for the chill out area and into the equipment available. We do hope to see you next year. Property Owner

Facilities were on the whole fantastic in this beautiful building. We found some things that needed attention however. Window Blinds which we were kindly advised about beforehand need attention. No aerial for snug tele, which was a feature advertised as available for use. Some windows didn’t appear to open effectively. Strange smell in fridge on arrival a little off putting. Water taps in downstairs bathroom need attention (same problem appeared to have been mentioned in visitor book back in Feb 22) The feature small windows off side of kitchen area would benefit from removal of cobwebs and cleaning. x1 Patio chair needs attention Recycling facilities would be a nice addition. A walk in shower would also be preferable. Welcome basket was a nice touch, thanks. On the whole however, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would not be put off from returning again.

Thank you for your helpful feedback - we work hard to make sure everyone has a good holiday and we will address the issues you point out. The taps have been checked and are now fully working, a new patio set has been ordered, cobwebs cleared, snug TV being checked and we are sorting out recycling collection with Scarborough Council so that will happen soon with any luck. Only (small) downsides. The property description mentioned an upstairs TV and X Box which the younger kids were looking forward to. However there is no X Box and the TV itself isn't connected to anything so doesn't work! The downstairs Smart TV was great though for evening Netflix. Also the bathrooms need a bit of TLC... peeling paint etc, and only 1 shower where the website suggests there are two. These are minor points though. Big open plan dining and living area was perfect for a family holiday and a lovely welcome basket provided. Scarborough, Whitby and Staithes all close by for day trips. Beds super comfy downstairs. Just a couple of minor things - shower in the downstairs bathroom was hard to get the correct temperature it seemed to go too hot or too cold. About the location

STAITHES

Whitby 10 miles.

The charming and sleepy seaside village of Staithes, with its cobbled streets and back alleys, is something of an artist’s dream. Its pretty houses and cottages are clustered around the old harbour and surrounded by high craggy cliffs on three sides, with a sheltered sandy beach set amongst the rocky coastline. The village can claim connections with Captain Cook who was apprenticed to a draper near the harbour. Nowadays, Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire Coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Staithes is still home to an RNLI lifeboat station and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) landing fish, crab and lobster, with boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and even whale watching available. It’s also the location of the popular BBC children’s TV series, Old Jack’s Boat. Staithes has a strong attraction for artists, with an annual Art and Heritage Festival, galleries and artists studios with art courses and workshops regularly on offer. There’s a free Illusion Trail, which guides visitors around the network of ginnels (alleyways), with trail guides available locally. The best views of the town can be enjoyed from the Cleveland Way which runs down the cliff to the sea’s edge. Altogether a superb base for exploring the Yorkshire Coast, visiting the larger resorts of Whitby or Scarborough and enjoying the moorland villages of the North York Moors National Park.
