  • "We had a lovely week at Bulmer Cottage."

It was quite compact in the living/kitchen area but we got used to it . The bed was nice and comfy and the area was very quiet. We unloaded car on Main Street and it was a couple of minutes walk to cottage with our bags from there, then parked car at top of hill. We were left a lovely bottle of wine and biscuits on arrival which was appreciated. Would definitely return

  • "We enjoyed our stay."

The cottage is very quirky and has all amenities. Unfortunately the house was freezing the first two evenings as the heating came on at the incorrect time through the night then by 4pm the house was cold but this was resolved. The information file was on a shelf in the corner and we couldn’t find it until I spoke to someone on the phone. You need to supply parking information as we paid £40 for4 nights inthe visitors car park and then found out there were cheaper options. It would also have been helpful to know where we could put glass bottles as recycling is different in different areas. It might also be an idea to advise guests that the bedroom on the top floor has very low ceilings and no where to hang clothes. With these things sorted I would give 5 stars.

But we found the cottage very clean. Lovely touch leaving a bottle of wine and ginger biscuits for us. Cute little cottage and in a great position. This is our 4th cottage at staithes and the best. Everything you need is supplied. Nice little seating area outside. We definitely will be back.

We had a fabulous stay. It was very well equipped and had everything we could possibly need. Only things i would mention is there was no freezer in the fridge which would have been handy for ice for drinks and any frozen food as we did bring some frozen food but didnt realise when we arrived there wasnt a fridge freezer. Also there were quite a few cobwebs especially in the bathroom so i think these were overlooked when cleaning. Other than that everywhere else was clean enough. Thank you for a lovely stay we will be back in the future

  • "We always read feedback on holiday breaks but like to give benefit of the doubt but I am so sorry to say on this occasion some of the previous feedback was correct regarding the cleanliness, when we entered the cottage there was a overwhelming odour of dogs, after searching where the smell was coming from we found the problem was the small rug in front of the fire it was that strong we had to roll the rug up and cover with a large bag to contain the odour for the duress of our stay-we then had to go and buy a mop and disinfectant and clean the floor area, the upstairs area was very clean but less attention is being shown to the ground floor sitting area by the cleaners."

it is such a shame as the cottage could be so lovely with a little attention plus the de’cor needs freshening up. One little bit of advice I would like to pass onto the owners is probably no rugs in the living room and a mop to clean the floor.

  • "Thank you very much for our stay at Bulmer’s Cottage."

We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Staithes and would love to come back one day. The cottage is very peaceful (minus the seagulls!) and cosy, and well equipped for our needs. The cottage was clean and tidy, although was a little musty when we arrived. I would recommend putting a blind or curtain on the lovely stable door in the kitchen, to maintain privacy in the evenings. We enjoyed a lovely meal at the Cod and Lobster, and enjoyed breakfast at Dotty’s and lovely coffee and ice cream at Cobbles. The little shop was not open until our third day, so we had to get milk etc from the co-op up the road. Thank you for a delightful stay at Bulmer’s Cottage, we look forward to returning one day.

  • "I read the reviews on Bulmers cottage before booking and have to say I usually take any negativity with a pinch of salt."

However there was one issue that repeatedly came up and it was cleanliness, an issue which I have to say sadly in this case was fairly justified! As a former property inspector in the holiday letting sector, I would have been calling my cleaner back in!! Both the kitchen area and bathroom warranted a clean (the kitchen was done by us during our stay), and any money invested on someone to do a decent job of changeovers could be easily recovered by increased letting costs for which most people (me included) would happily pay just so as not to have to complain! This one negative issue aside we had a thoroughly great visit, the cottage was completely charming, comfortable and suited our needs perfectly, the bedrooms were both warm even on the the coldest of nights and the beds were very comfy. We enjoyed a busy but relaxing few days exploring the local area, walking the beaches and trying the local pubs etc. All in all Bulmers cottage represented fantastic value for money for a comfortable stay in a great location. We would definitely like to re visit both Staithes and Bulmers cottage in the future but for a longer stay maybe?

Lovely bottle of wine & biscuits nice surprise Bad points The cottage was dirty felt like it needed a good clean. The fire was still full of ash from previous residents. The bathroom was dirty my husband cleaned it . Shelves thick with dust. All of the cupboards where full other peoples things. No room to put our things in, especially in the kitchen. We ended up phoning the owner because the bedside lamp was flashing and arcing under the bed. Luckily my husband saw it. It could have set the place alight. The owners phoned us back & left a voice message of just background noise. Staithes is a lovely place we still enjoyed our holiday but the cottage would have been lovely had it been clean.

We arrived to find the cottage opposite having Scaffolding, totally understand work does go on but a quick email to be made aware would have been appreciated. The cottage itself was suitable for our needs but could have done with a good clean downstairs especially as were in a 'Covid' situation. Some window blinds were broken, wooden blocks were needed & supplied to keep windows open (Not at all Suitable for small children) & Cooker needed a good clean. We couldn't sit outside the cottage during the day which was a bit disappointing and the noise from the drilling was pretty bad at times which meant it was not the relaxing break we had hoped for. It would have been appreciated if we had been forewarned of this as we would probably have chosen to reschedule to a different date. I read a review on booking.com suggesting it 'needed a bit of love'. It has either had a lot of love since then or the writer was confusing needing love with not being modern and slick. • "The property is in a great location and had most things we needed for a week away."

However, on arrival to the cottage on the Saturday, it was cold inside as the heating had not been turned on until that morning. With there being a caretaker, it would’ve been nice for them to have gone in the night before to ensure both the heating and the hot water were switched on. We luckily found where to turn the hot water on ourselves throughout our stay but this shouldn’t have been our responsibility. There was also a note on the side to say the shower was out of order when we first arrived and needed a part. At this point, we were unsure when the note meant it was going to be fixed. Later, the caretaker came over to tell us it should be sorted the next day (being Sunday) and that we could have a bath instead. This would’ve been fine, if there was actually enough hot water to fill the bath! The shower didn’t eventually get fixed until the Tuesday. Throughout our stay, we came across other minor things such as one of the upstairs bedroom blinds not working (so we had to put a magazine up the window to stop the light coming in) and the fridge door came off in our hands when opening it. The chairs aren’t particularly comfortable and the fire doesn’t give out an awful lot of heat. It is a cute and quaint little cottage that could be so much better with a little TLC.

However we did have an issue with the heating which detracted from the experience. The storage radiators did not seem to be up to the job of keeping the cottage warm. We may have missed a trick with the controls, but there were no instruction booklets. Consequently, for most of the stay we were struggling to keep warm especially at night and in the bathroom. Additional blankets in the Winter might be a good idea. The cottage itself was very well equipped and is very clean. if I came back, which I am hoping to do, it will probably be at a different time of the year. Also, it would be helpful to have a map of where the cottage actually is in Chapel Yard (there are two Chapel Yards). We had search parties helping us look for it - in the dark. The sat nav took us to the general area, but obviously not the cottage.

About the location

STAITHES

Whitby 10 miles.

The charming and sleepy seaside village of Staithes, with its cobbled streets and back alleys, is something of an artist’s dream. Its pretty houses and cottages are clustered around the old harbour and surrounded by high craggy cliffs on three sides, with a sheltered sandy beach set amongst the rocky coastline. The village can claim connections with Captain Cook who was apprenticed to a draper near the harbour. Nowadays, Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire Coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Staithes is still home to an RNLI lifeboat station and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) landing fish, crab and lobster, with boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and even whale watching available. It’s also the location of the popular BBC children’s TV series, Old Jack’s Boat. Staithes has a strong attraction for artists, with an annual Art and Heritage Festival, galleries and artists studios with art courses and workshops regularly on offer. There’s a free Illusion Trail, which guides visitors around the network of ginnels (alleyways), with trail guides available locally. The best views of the town can be enjoyed from the Cleveland Way which runs down the cliff to the sea’s edge. Altogether a superb base for exploring the Yorkshire Coast, visiting the larger resorts of Whitby or Scarborough and enjoying the moorland villages of the North York Moors National Park.
