  • "Lovely spacious cottage in a quiet rural village which is close to the A1."

Ideally located for touring around this area of North Yorkshire. Would definitely recommend.

  • "1. The upstairs bathroom is in one of the bedrooms, which isn't clear in the description as the other twin room is upstairs too, so that person has to use the downstairs bathroom in the middle of the night to prevent waking anyone up in the upstairs bedroom."

    2. Unfortunately, the pond was a huge ditch of mud. The Owner had people there trying to fix the problem during our stay, on the Sunday, but it was a shame that the view wasn’t as it was promised on the Sykes website. The Owner hadn't notified us of this prior to our stay. 3. A locked adjoining door leads from the Owners home to the kitchen of Pond View, which is slightly unnerving and we heard the dogs and tumble drier on numerous occasions. 4. The oven isn't fit for purpose and heat escapes from the right hand side. We let the Owner know about this, hoping she'd switch the range on, but she didn't offer to. Such a shame as we couldn't use the oven to cook anything properly. We didn’t like to try and switch it on ourselves after this. It took over an hour to cook a thin pizza, that should have been cooked in 10 minutes. 5. The fridge door shelf has been mended with superglue, so milk can't be stored in the door. It's a tiny fridge, especially for a property that sleeps 6. The Owner controls the timings for the central heating, but there are heaters to use at other times. Unfortunately, the timings were not appropriate for us, so we mentioned it to the Owner who put the heating on for one extra hour in the evening, but did not change the morning times. The bad points of Pond View far outweigh the good points. We wouldn’t recommend Pond View to anyone.

  • "Plenty of room, probably better for a family."

We were 5 adults sharing. The upstairs bathroom was in 1 of the bedrooms, so you had to go downstairs all the time. Hardly any fridge room, but the owners let us access another. Needs more kitchen equipment, especially if people are making different meals. Hard to share cooking on the hob, as it's right in a corner. In a lovely setting, with outdoor seating and a lovely view.

  • "A very comfortable cosy cottage, with plenty of amenities, in a quiet pretty village location, with nice garden views."

It was close enough to the main north/south A1M to make it easily accessible but not so close that it intruded on the village. The cottage was easy and conveniently situated for us to be able to reach places of interest - the thriving market town of Northallerton, as well as Thirsk, home of the James Herriot museum. We were also able to access both the beautiful Yorkshire dales and the North Yorkshire Moors, and even catch one of the famous steam trains of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in Pickering and take the scenic journey through spectacular countryside to Whitby, as well as visit The Royal Horticultural Society Garden at Harlow Carr, Harrogate. We even squeezed in a quick visit to see a friend in York. Our hostess, Gaynor, was welcoming, helpful and friendly, providing us with a pleasant reminder of characteristic North Eastern hospitality.

  • "Unfortunately the hosts were not very welcoming and made us feel uncomfortable."

The furry bedding was unusual and we were not offered any clean bedding during our 28 day stay - I bought some to keep us going. The long track to the cottage is full of large unavoidable potholes , not good for cars suspension. The small TV in the lounge is not what families expect on holiday.

Sometimes you cannot please anyone,we found Susan unreasonable, making bedding demands among others(single quilts on single beds not acceptable as she needed to “snuggle with something wider”)we did supply a king size quilt immediately anyway, unfortunately that was too late as she was scorned,we extended the heating for the period of stay, offered other help, clean bedding was given twice during her stay but she is right that our drive is potholed as we speak(due to a development adjacent)but will be sorted very shortly! Our TV isn’t the biggest she’s right but it’s not always about size Susan, maybe she thought we were a hotel? Property Owner

The owners were really nice and accommodating resolving any issues,(that were beyond their control in the first place) we had no issues with the mattresses but they were changed whilst we were there. Unfortunately a tv mast got damaged(again beyond owners control) but managed to watch players and hub on devices, no issue with wifi. Would definitely have no issues with going there again. Beautiful setting with lots to do. Great base for day trips out. Thank you so much. Also Sykes Cottages handled everything brilliantly from booking, payment and amendments to the booking.

Their property is absolutely beautiful. The views are amazing outside and they keep farm animals which The children loved. There is a gorgeous pond with a small bridge which you could stand and look at for hours. It is local to thirsk Town centre, only a 15 minute drive away and it is close to many different attractions, such as monk Park animal farm. Our family party of six staying for 4 nights thoroughly enjoyed the cottage facilities and comforts to the point that we plan to re-visit at a future date. Two family members stayed longer than originally planned. The cottage is extremely well placed, just off the A1 motorway in a very peaceful, scenic setting and within easy access of many Yorkshire towns and attractions. We visited Masham, Thirsk, Leyburn and Ripon. Each business we visited made us welcome and were interested to make time for informal chats, asking where we were from and where we were staying. We especially prefer to support independent businesses and found some excellent cheese, milk and bakery producers, tea shops and family butchery businesses. Lots of choice and fair pricing in all of the suppliers we found. Extremely enjoyable break and we can't wait to return.

  • "This cottage is in a very good location for exploring the North York Moors and over to the East Coast."

Also for exploring the Yorkshire Dales. The entrance to the lane to the cottage is not easily found so had to ring the owner for instructions once we were in the village. Maybe some sort of signage would be useful. The owner is very pleasant and is on hand most of the time for queries. It was a shame that the patio set outside did not have a little table to put drinks/nibbles on. Felt a little uncomfortable that we did not get a key for the outer door, so it was just a case of shutting it! We had a key for the inner door into the sitting room but the downstairs shower room/toilet was in between these 2 doors. Therefore to use this facility in the night you had to unlock the door. These are small issues, but apart from these we had a lovely week in North Yorkshire helped by some very hot weather. Had 1 meal at the Nags Head (Cantonese restaurant) which is in the village and would recommend it.

The land surrounding the house was great and made a beautiful setting for the house. If anything needed adding it was a small table either side of the bed with a lamp on it, as my husband and I both take water to bed they are needed. Also extra shelving in the upstairs bathroom for toiletries would be most useful, everything else was just ideal.
